Hello, how about a little tech talk...?

I am an avid cyclist and incurable tinkerer when it comes to my primary bike.  Some recent trends offer lot's of 'bling and poseur points but do they really merit the need to mash to the nearest LBS to drop a months salary on?  Carbon fiber seems to be the latest trend.  There are several high end cranksets out there made from carbon that will certainly dent your wallet without really saving too many grams or offering an upgrade in performance.  Any carbon crank users out there that care to discuss the performance enhancements of this component?  I cringe at the notion of dropping my chain and scratching up a $600 Record carbon crankset.  Is there a stiffness factor that I'm overlooking?  If so, why do all the big sprinters (Boonen, Petacci, big Maggie) continue to use their old school alloy models?
