ToC Stage 1 - what was that crunching sound?

[editor's note, by chris] Jimbo surveys the wreckage...

Jelly Belly may have the most vibrant team car, but...

Star-divide

their mechanic was seriously slow to get moving after the carnage.

My daughter and I were camped at the 50-meter-to-go line, right across from the VIP tents where we could see the live feed on the multiple VIP TVs (VIP tent = TV's, full bar, and an endless procession of BBQ wing bearing caterers. I must get very important before next year's race.)

Anyway, from 50 meters back and with all the crowd noise, I couldn't really see or hear much. All I could see was a bunch of cyclists standing still right past the finish line. The team cars all came to a halt in front of us, the mechanics exited quickly, wheels in hand, and bolted for the apparent pile up. All of them, that is, except the Jelly Belly guy who just kind of sat there in his easily id'd team car looking around, understandably confused, before he finally opened the door and got moving. Within two minutes the mess was cleared up and everyone was off again.

The group in front of the crash, probably 40 or so riders, came by a few minutes later with Bettini smack dab in the sweet spot. In truth, given all the speed and excitment, he was the only one I could pick out (white jersey sticks out) but he was in really great position, ten riders back right in the middle.

Two laps later, they came by for the final time, going really, really fast, all strung out in full sprint mode, two Rabobank guys in front, Hushovd about three riders back and the rest close behind. Bettini was all alone 500 meters behind the lead group. The rest of the field dribbled in for the next several minutes. A few sporting brand new road rash.

No idea who won. It was all very fast and very exciting... all blured speed and crowd noise. But, it could have been better. I would speculate that the crash made the final sprint a lot more civilized since it removed over half the sprinters and slowed things down a whole lot. The first time the peloton came through, it was big and angry. The last two times, it was cautious. Understandable, given that it's only mid-Feb and not even spring yet, except for here paradise. These guys have a long season ahead of them.

Versus coverage just came on so time to go. Can't wait to see what happened with the wreck. Sadly, work calls no more live racing action for Jimbo. Hopefully someone else will pick this up. This blogging thing is fun! Next thing you know, I'll start texting my buddies and wearing my pants around my thighs.

Chris, next year we need to weasle some press passes out of the organizers so a few of us SF locals can get some wings, uh, I mean, so we can cover the race better...

But...wait!
Any whispered news about Dave Z?  Heard he was hospitalized.  Surely, surely somebody is talking about it. ?

X-rays negative
I think I read that at VN. They thought he broke his wrist, but apparently he's OK.

Concussion
From cyclingnews.com writeup:
CSC's David Zabriskie went down with about forty kilometers to go and was taken to hospital after medical staff concluded he had a concussion. Later tests showed no abnormalities but will not be able to start tomorrow's stage.

Not a banner day for Phil
OK, I'm generally a huge Phil Liggett fan, but as a local I was surprised by the number of mistakes he made today.

First, despite Phil's numerous statements to the contrary, the race went nowhere near the top of Mount Tam - it crossed maybe two-thirds of the way up via the easiest route.  Later, he commented over footage of a particularly nasty section of Coleman Valley Road that it wasn't as steep as the earlier climb.  That's just so wrong - at least Paul corrected him.  There are steep routes up Tam, but we didn't see them today.

I was also surprised to hear so little mention of the wind.  I rode out to Pt. Reyes Station to catch the sprint, and can tell you that it was pretty nasty out there today.

On top of the unnecessary questioning of Jason Donald's result yesterday, Phil's not off to a great start.

Not much to add...
I was near the same spot as Jimbo and witnessed the jealously of the VIP seats across the way.

I missed the call of the race while staring at the screens.

Stayed for the podium and saw Lemond talking to fans and posing for pictures.

Tolleson had bailed for the jersey presentation so Peterson was a stand-in for the pictures.

Levi seemed very happy at home with his people.  Yes, it was Levi town today.  It was almost as if they couldn't take it if he wasn't leading.

Bob Roll looked a little lost.

Saw Rabobank Tv cameras so be on the lookout for coverage from them.

Will be out on the course tomorrow will report on what I see...

Levi's Jersey fuzzed out?
Hey, did anybody notice that Levi's jersey was fuzzed out on Versus TV (while on the climb)?  Or is it that I had too much Magic Hats'.  As if they were trying to censor something!

Why did some riders not get the same time?
So Levi gets the same time because of the wreck.  Starting with the 97th finisher, Rory Southerland, the rest of the finishers were not given the same time.  Surely the time gaps were caused by the accident.  Can anyone give a logical explanation.

by John.. on Feb 20, 2007 7:25 AM EST   0 recs

Logical Explanation:
Home Field Advantage

by TCWriter on Feb 20, 2007 11:51 AM EST   0 recs

Rory was driving the bus
It was not home field advantage, at least not in this case. There was a pretty sizeable groupetto that got to town well behind the main peloton. So when the commissaires decided to ignore the circuits, the stragglers guys got a time gap. Probably made sense to the commissaires...

by Jimbo... on Feb 20, 2007 12:20 PM EST   0 recs

Correction
After looking at the full results, Rory was not driving the bus, at least not the big bus... he was driving the short bus... and only the first of several. I'll stand by my "logical" explanation though. A bunch of guys got into town late so if there had never been any circuits planned in the first place, they would have all gotten a time gap.

by Jimbo... on Feb 20, 2007 12:46 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

If they had been straggling
If they had been straggling at the time of the crash, I'd agree.

But Sutherland, Ciolek, Horner, et. al. were in the main bunch when the crash happened. Ciolek was in the top 10 when he lost it. So if they were all in a bunch when the crash happened, how can the time gaps be justified?

I'm not confusing you w/ the race directors and blaming you for the decision, just pointing out that there were no stragglers when the crash happened. The peloton was complete at the time of the crash and riders who were leading the group at the time of the crash were given slower times.

by Koppenberg on Feb 20, 2007 1:15 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

There were stragglers when the crash happened...
I can't tell you who they were or if the Directors picked the wrong people. Who knows? I was standing right there and I can't tell you. My point was that there is an reasonable explanation for why the times are what they are. The directors didn't randomly select people and assign them a time gap for PR purposes, or because it is not a "real race" or for any other evil reasons. They may have decided to give the win to Levi for PR reasons. Again, who knows? It certainly looks that way to me, but, the crash happened after the first circuit lap, not right after they came into town. Apparently Horner and Ciolek were behind when they came into town and had caught up to the peloton during the first lap. Which, if true, is pretty impressive. But, since the directors negated ALL the circuits, not just the final two circuits, Horner was apparently behind at the point the directors decided to end the race. I'm not saying it makes sense or is fair, I'm just saying that there is an explanation besides pure PR hackery or home town rules.

The real enemy
Perhaps we can all agree that the blame belongs mostly to those pesky road bott dots...

:)

Actually...
I blame Canada

by Jimbo... on Feb 20, 2007 2:19 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

I've mentioned this on another thread...
but it was Ciolek who caused the crash. He was in the top 10 of the bunch when it happened. His time on the stage was over 8 minutes behind the leaders.

So, in order for the explanation to be reasonable, we would have to assume that Gerald was 8 minutes down when the leaders entered the circuit. He then would have had to make up those 8 minutes in 5k to get to the front, only to crash and lose it all.

I haven't read a reasonable explanation for why some riders who where in the bunch that crashed were not given the same time. Now, such an explanation may exist, but I haven't seen it yet.

by Koppenberg on Feb 20, 2007 3:33 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

I can't argue with that...
Ciolek making up 8 minutes in a single circuit makes no sense since the entire circuit seemed to take less than 8 minutes... Next time I should probably look at the actual time gaps before I comment.

Botton line
It seems pretty clear that the ToC organizers and most teams see the race as more of a publicity event than a real race. I'm guessing the only ones really upset by the decision are riders on continental teams (such as Jacques-Mayne) who lose out on putting up good results against Pro Tour teams and affording their sponsors good exposure.

That said, I love the race and it's a true treat to see the pro peloton snaking along some of the same roads I ride on all the time.

by JohnSFO on Feb 20, 2007 12:44 PM EST   0 recs

Blame Canada
Hi Jimbo:  You are probably correct...Michael Barry of TMO was in the race and at this time of year cannot be expected to ride safely on bare roads with good traction.   Up until late May, we of the Great White North, are used to ice and snow on all our roads.  So, we Canadians apologize for the accident and are going to try and prevent any others by riding frozen tires.  Cheers, Mr. Canuck...Team Canada.

by canadian on Feb 21, 2007 2:28 AM EST   0 recs

Damn
Even when subjected to silly movie wisecracks, those Canucks are still polite... What will it take?

No Celine Dion snark?
Fine. My apologies Canadian. No offense. The Anne Murray crack was uncool. She is obviously a Canadian national treasure. You and your fellow countrymen are fortunate to be blessed with a talent such as hers...

Canadian Music
Hi Gang:  No offence taken with any of your remarks.   Up here in the Great White North we are justly proud of our contribution to the music scene...Anne Murray...Neil Young...Shania Twain...even Stompin' Tom from Prince Edward Island...but our best achievment is/was getting rid of Celine Dion and giving her to Las Vegas.  The total dislike of her is one of the few things that the English & French cultures agree on.  Enjoy!!!  Mr. Canuck.

Ah, Shakey
Playing the ace. Well done Canuck.

Why do you mock us with you kindness?
