Breaking: Petacchi Cleared to Race

Wire services report that the Italian Cycling Federation has rejected the findings of the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) and declined to punish Alessandro Petacchi for excessive Salbutamol use in this year's Giro d'Italia. CONI had recommended a one-year suspension, and Petacchi was shelved by his Milram team as a result, missing the Tour de France. So unless the UCI wants to make an example for the other TUE holders, this whole weird episode is over.

Sort of a sideshow
This one is a bit of a sideshow today.  But FWIW:

Italian press reports that Torri has said that he will appeal the decision of the Italian federation.  Torri is displeased ;-)

No more details as of now.

Hmm
Seems odd that Petacchi will get any sort of punishment. I think that the CAS will probably agree that it wasn't done intentionally (since there's no way to prove it was), and that it's not worth actually suspending him, considering TUE violations are normally given slaps on the wrists.

He may not ride the TdF again
The French teams have vowed to ban TUEs completely. If you are sick enough to need one then you automatically get two weeks off work.
