First 'cross race-impressions

I've been a cyclocross fan for the past couple years and bought a frame last fall which I built as a winter trainer/cross racer.  Nothing too fancy, a Felt F1X frame with centaur, proton wheels etc.

Today I finally got a chance to see what this whole cyclocross scene is about from a racing point of view.  I have had no time to train during the week due to my occupation (settlement risk manger for a custodial bank) but I figured my base miles would carry me through.  Also my expectations were to finish and stay upright.  With the exception of a spill during training, mission accomplished there.

Here are my impressions of the sport.  Running was minimal in today's course. I didn't do any running as training, and I doubt it would have made a difference.  What I did need to practice though is the dismounts/mounts and hurdling 18" high barriers (which feel like 3 feet by the 4th lap).  In todays course there were two sets of barriers, one big log that required a dismount and a short run up of 20-25 meters.

What I noticed though was how important bike handling skills are.  The course snaked through a hilly field and a bit of singletrack with lots of 180 degree turns full of ruts and even some mud (thankfully it was dry today).  I found myself struggling to maneuver my bike through the course, but the legs felt fresh for the full 40 minutes.   It had more of a MTB feel to it than a road race (IMHO).

My bike equipment was ok.  I would have prefered a larger tire than the 30mm Michelin Cyclocross Sprints that I'm running.  I spent most of the time in my small ring (34t), but mostly because I was too lazy to shift.  The 46t was fine for the few moments i was in it.  I needed a granny on one climb, but honestly a 46/36 or even 46/38 would be fine with a 26 or 27t in the back.  My Crank Brother Eggbeater pedals were perfect.  I didn't miss or need the platform of my Candy's that I use on my MTB, and the 4 sided entry was ideal.  They shed mud and grass perfectly.  No complaints.  The Centaur shifting was solid too. No surprises here.  One issue I had was the old sticky headset that came with the frame.  It felt like it locked on me a few times, and you need to really be nimble.  A new one has been ordered and will be installed before my next race.   The headset and wider and better tires will be the only changes I'll make for this season.

Overall, I had an absolute ball.  I already signed up for another race in 2 weeks and could see this being my main source of 2 wheel competetion for years to come.  It's a super workout, a lot of fun and the crowd has a festive feel to it (those silly cowbells really force you to work hard for the fans).  I urge you to try it if you haven't already.  You wont regret it.  I wish i was racing again tomorrow...

Good Write-up

I appreciate the comments on the equipment you use. I’d like to try cross one day, but I just purchased a second road bike and I can’t see me buying another bike for a while.

thanks, cross frames

are pretty cheap and other than canti’s and the different size chainring, road gear is fine. I did wish i had those bar top brake levers a few times today though.

Way to go Mr. Van P!

Drew must be smiling ear to ear reading this.
I’m not into racing, just riding my bike for fun and exercise but I am thrilled to read that you guys (the riders) like the cheering on and the cowbells. I’ve been going to the local Cross series here cheeing on the riders as, well, it’s just a lot of fun and a nice way to spend a couple hours on a Sunday. I loved all the road races I got out to this year but there is something pretty special and fun about the Cross atmosphere. The people are all friendly, the riders all seem to be in good spirits, the course can be seen from anywhere, and it’s about an hour of racing per group. I’ve been making sure we are at the Cat 3 races because we get to cheer on the men and women at the same time. Tons of fun.

Way to go on your ride! Keep us posted on your rides! Cheers from here for sure!

Thanks Nikki

Drew was there too, only he was in the same race as the McCormack brothers. The atmosphere is a blast and the post race beer was very satisfyling> it’s a great spectator sport too, since no matter where you are, you can see the action,. New England has tons of races too. I need to practice more, but I can’t wait for my next one.

Keep those cowbells ringing.

Excellent

Any moments on that course that you wish you had your MTB? I’m convinced that a few racers I know (who are primarily endurance MTB racers) would finish better on their MTBs than CX bikes . . .

The first half of the couse I did

since there where huge ruts and then about 200-300 meters of singletrack in the woods. But my MTB is a rather heavy FS rig, that would have been a bear carrying over the hurdles. Plus there’s a long stretch of flat that you really need to hammer, so it’s nice to get in the drops and drive it. I think larger tires (especially since I"m no lightweight), would have helped more than anything.

Hm

Someone got the bug… well done bro!

I hope not to sound elitist but...

you don’t need a granny in a cross race – thats what the running is for and its much faster.

Agreed on the granny

My thoughts were to get off the bike as little as possible, but when you are spinning a 34/26 on a grassy hill, you are faster running. The 34 was overkill too. I would have prefered a more versatile small ring.

And thanks Chris.

Ditto

Petey and I talked about this after his race and before mine, as general rule of thumb is many times it’s faster or as fast to run a section as it is to ride it. Run ups / difficult sections are a complex mix of “am I strong enough to ride it in gear X or am I fit enough to run it instead” or a mixture of the two. Pete raises a good point in that running or riding sections can start off easily enough on lap 1 but by lap 5 they’re a horror show. I had that happen at a race last week simply because I haven’t done much running in training and that particular course caught up with me.

I’ve been meaning to get around to a cross article but have been really busy with a new job lately. I’ll see if I can post something for both newbies and veterans of the cross wars (both watching and participating) that can have semi permanent status in the sidebar for the coming months.

Can we swing this Chris?

Welcome to the party Pete ;-)

Or...

not. Seems like the “feature” feature doesn’t make it show up if it’s a fanpost. You can do it as a feature by redoing it as a story, or else just get enough people to recommend it so graduates to the recommended section.

If Drew is too lazy to redo anything, I'm sure we can help out with a few recs. :-)

The hill right after the barriers

was a no-brainer, since you’re aleady off the bike. On the first lap, I had a mis-shift, jumped off my bike and ran up the next hill. Probably just as fast, but I’m no pro at the remount so any speed advantage gained running, was lost.

by Mr Van P on Oct 26, 2008 10:08 AM EDT   0 recs

Yup - I was much faster pushing than remounting and riding

You’ll find that in sloppy conditions it’s much faster to run and carry your bike, in dry conditions you can run and push it and it goes just as well.

I need to practice my carrying technique

instead of just pushing the dumb thing up the hill…

by Mr Van P on Oct 26, 2008 11:12 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Just like dismounts, all it takes

is practice.

I think the biggest tip I ever got

was to not stutter-step when re-mounting. Meaning, if you’re off of the left side of the bike, make your last lunging step off of your left foot while aiming to land (not too high) on the saddle with the inner thigh of your right leg. If your last step is a stutter hoppy-kind-of-thing on you left foot, you kill almost all of your forward momentum. Check the pros out, they’re almost parallel to the ground while remounting after a fast set of barriers… (caveat, reverse it all if you dismount on the right hand side)

Excellent work on your race… do you even remember the pain now? I seem to space that out pretty quick and only remember the good times! Foolish, I know, but it keeps me coming back!

Ha - not "planned"

but Mike was in the right spot on the course to grab the pic. Mike (the rider) was having some good fun that day. One of the laps he passed by us, I got the all out sticking the tongue good laughs. Mike (soupy) has some great pics from the races – on flickr. The team has a photo pool on flcker too.

I highly recommend the “Cyclocross Solutions” DVD. I ordered it online last year, the year before & I’ve watched it several times & I’ve leaned it out countless times as well. In fact, it’s out on loan right now.
