Sella cooperates with CONI – one-year ban

D_medium The Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) recommended a one-year suspension for Emanuele Sella, who tested positive for EPO-CERA this last July.

The Italian, winner of three stages and the mountains jersey in the Giro d'Italia, cooperated with investigators to earn a reduced sentence. CONI's Danilo di Tommaso told Cyclingnews why Sella, who would have normally been recommended to receive a two-year ban, was given half that. "He collaborated and named names, so he got a reduction, according to the WADA codes," he said. "It will now be sent to the disciplinary commission." Sella met with CONI's prosecutor Ettore Torri in August. He admitted to doping in a two-hour meeting that took place at CONI's headquarters in Rome.

Still has to be approved

The sanction still has to be approved by the Tribunale, so this isn’t final. Sometimes the CONI recommendation stands, sometimes it doesn’t.

Is Lazzaro persona non grata? If so, I guess we can expect another 3-6 months on top of the 12 suggested once the FIC get to hear the case.

I'm guessing

the tribunale thingy throws a month or several more on there, but I’m not sure. A year? Really? A tad short, in my view.

oopsy

Hit post too quickly: the final sanction for Riccò turned out to be longer than CONI recommended.

by Jen See on Nov 11, 2008 11:40 AM EST up reply actions

All they added was a consecutive six (?) months for consorting with Santuccione. Didn’t they accept the proposed reduction in the basic sentence for co-operation? That CONI are here giving the max poss reduction suggest Sell must have give more helpful assistance than Riccò did.

They better tack on some extra time

I don’t want to see Sell at any part of next year. This is why the ban should be 4 years. I agree with cutting down the time of the suspension, if a rider is very cooperative, but when it only results in a 1 year ban, well that’s not enough punishment in my mind. They still cheated and they should sit out at least a full season. If there was the 4 year ban they could cut the suspension down to 2-3 years, I would be happy with that. But 1 year, hell no.

I suspect

that on the wages most of these guys get, one year is plenty tough enough. OK the likes of Basso may be able to sit it out and spend the time training, but I doubt if Sella is rich enough to survive a year without a job.

Well who's fault is that?

I doubt Sella was in much jeopardy of losing his job at CSF, if he goes bankrupt now he only has himself to blame. I personally really hope he’s out from more than one year because of his hideous riding style. :)

But if you want these guys to come clean

then you have to give them a hope of finding a way back into the sport. One year does that, any more and most will just walk away and keep their mouth shut. The big problem is the fact that the authorities have been far too complicit in the past of the doping culture that has developed in Pro cycling. If they are finally changing now then we need a transition period to get the message through. First of all start taking testing seriously, then slowly crank the suspensions up so that everyone knows that when people say they mean it then this time they really do mean it, unlike the other crackdowns in the past decade.

And it’s odd, but even though Sella was one of the first that anyone would have called out as a doper at the Giro, I still was quite fond of seeing the little guy being interviewed at the end of stages.

by Monty. on Nov 11, 2008 2:44 PM EST up reply actions

yep you have to give them a reason to come clean and a reduced sentence is a good one

but second offense, ban them for life.

Ah yes the fan dilemna. Some dopers are nice guys that are great to fan, gives great interviews and are even nice to orphans and nuns, and some dopers are not. Some nice guys are dopers and some nice guys are not. And some assholes are dopers and some are not. But the rules must apply the same to all.

I don't think so

He named his team-mate Priamo as his supplier, but there hasn’t been much else reported. I was just over at Capodacqua’s place looking for more deets. Niente. But no, CONI hasn’t hauled anyone else in for questioning just yet, that I’ve seen.

by Jen See on Nov 11, 2008 11:38 AM EST up reply actions

is Priamo suspended

or even questioned??

Doesn’t make sense, this one.

Also UCI refusing to re-test the Giro samples is strange…….

by Bruce Suomi on Nov 11, 2008 3:25 PM EST up reply actions

UCI refusing to restest the Giro works three ways for me:

1) There’s probably a few names in the passport that they’d rather catch with the passport, to say look, this is how good it is, rather than going back to retro testing;
2) Riccò and Sella are caught and they were the two biggest culprits at the Giro;
3) The UCI is a bunch of tight-fisted bureaucrats who wouldn’t pay to have their own mothers rescued from a burning building if they didn’t already have the cost covered..

you forgot ....

4) money was exchanged so that UCI would not test the Giro samples.
5) UCI doesn’t want anyone from the Giro caught as it may open up a can of worms as far as the testing done/not done

yep, I could come up with more.

oh and #2 – how does anyone know the biggest culprit unless they already have the test results but choose not to make public?

by lyne on Nov 11, 2008 4:17 PM EST up reply actions

Best case scenario

they are working behind the scenes to build cases against people Sella ratted out. I would like that approach. Much bettter that than going straight to the media , creating a long circus that never leads to anything due to lack of evidence.

I agree with you both, but

where does this leave Priamo?
Is he allowed to race? Did Navigare suspend him after Sella talked about him? Or is he still on the roster?

UCI refusing to re-test the samples does make sense now, thanks for clearing that up! :)

by Bruce Suomi on Nov 11, 2008 4:13 PM EST up reply actions

not sure if he's suspended from the team

Honestly, I can’t remember. And true confessions? I’m way too lazy to look it up.

But as far as I know, CONI has not yet called him in for questioning. I would expect they will get around to it eventually, though it’s been a tad busy around there, lately.

I just posted this in another thread

but it’s possibly relevant here too. Cicloweb forums have a rumour that Paride Grillo has decided to hang up his bike. I don’t know if it’s true, and even so it may not be related. Right now it’s just an interesting coincidence.

by Monty. on Nov 11, 2008 2:15 PM EST up reply actions

saw that rumor

i think i saw it elsewhere too. huh.

One little detail now over at Capo's place

Sella apparently said that Priamo gave him the dope on the 17th April, so in good time for the Giro. Priamo has denied it, saying that on that day he was elsewhere, taking part in, as the Italians put it so well, a gallant adventure (“eri [read ero] impegnato in un’avventura galante”). I wonder if someone else will be looking for an excuse if this goes any further. Shades of helicopters over the beach.

excellent

I didn’t have a chance to head back over to Capo’s House. Galante avventura. Ha!
