Resistance is Futile

Go ahead... just try not to watch these videos:

Ronde Van Vlaanderen 2008 - Koppenberg (via dan2006RVV). This was the runner-up (and my choice) for the year's most memorable moment. Great morning. And now, the 'Cross version:

How many times Boonen did this climb

in his life? I think is so many that he can transform in something that i don’t see him doing along the all season.

Heh

If I lived near the koppenberg, I’d be going up it all the time. Sort of a Ahab-versus-white-whale relationship.

Man I hate how that road is all bumpy and shi*t, they need to pave it over, widen it too.

Ahlan wa sahlan ...

I haven’t had a moment’s rest in the last two or three weeks. First there was “Richard Scary presents: Dan’s Adventure Week” that had me in the gym 5 days, doing a night dive, rock climbing class and then a 3 tank dive boat trip off he coast of Catalina, followed by a week’s worth of failed bandwidth upgrades for the home office here (I’m looking at you XO Communications!!!!), after which I was graced with the announcement from the County of Los Angeles that I had to report for Jury Duty today and possibly serve until next week… which would be bad, since I leave for Egypt on Sunday.

Well… I survived Adventure week, including a fantastic dive through a a kelp forest using a mask with corrective lenses in it for the first time, was the only member of the climbing class to summit the hardest of the four pitches, got my Night Diving endorsement, kicked XO in the nuts and got our bandwidth doubled and successfully postponed Jury Duty today. I think I’ll celebrate by going to Egypt on Sunday.

I should also say that there was an official PodiumCafe MeatSpace encounter: I met Bethie and her son Wil at the Marriott where she was staying for a conference. Thanks for the Blue Moon Bethie!!!

Anyway… it’s nice to be missed… I suppose this is my official “I’m Going On Vacation Post”… and when I return, I expect Gavia to have sorted this rascally Astana team out.

And no… I haven’t seen the bartender since she shot me down months ago.

I told you Dan would come crawling back if I put up a Koppenberg video.

Who knew?

I tried to bait him all week to come chatter. Nothing.
You put up the videos and he’s here in minutes.
What the hell Dan. You better take some good pics while you’re away. sniff sniff.

Me too

Nice find – Pete’s going to go through a similar experience today down in Brockton. It rained all day yesterday and is continuing today :-)

Did you guys up north get any of the craziness we had here a couple of days ago?

The onshore flow was HUGE and the waves were insane.

lol, yeah

We had that about a day before you did, probably. I surfed it, lol, pure silliness. I’ve got a nice, long, point nearby, though, which helps. And junky days are fun, cuz the crowds stay home.

Now we’re on fire. Good-sized canyon fire behind town, going up good. Sheesh.

After watching the first video

I had to chuckle at the cyclingnews report

As the leaders hit the Koppenberg, the mad weather continued with snow making the riders surely feel comfortable. Boonen tested his rivals, some of whom had to unclip and walk up the slippery cobbles.

Some had to walk? I counted over fifty.

by majope on Nov 13, 2008 5:27 PM EST reply actions

How great would it be

if the fans on the Koppenberg would boo loudly and throw things(nothing harmful) at the riders who walked up the climb? I think it would be quite amusing to watch and it would make the climb even that more challenging.

Please tell me it’s nearly April…? No, you say? I think I may start hibernating in the winter, like a marmot.

THAT'S what a Murmeltier is? A Marmot?

My uncle in Germany used to tell me stories about Murmeltier all the time when I was a young kid of 4 or 5. All this time I just thought they were the German equivalent of a Basselope.

Yes… if you do the translation, that basically means I had a Stiff Marmot as a child.

Awww, a Steiff marmot! I so never knew such things existed!

I have a toy marmot. I bought him in Grenoble airport during a several hour long delay. I have become quite attached to him. He’s looking forward to the Tour next year; he will be accompanying us in our camper van and will be photographed in various iconic places.

Bahaha! Classic.

Do you think marmots feel deeply about cycling? I suppose the ones who live on Alpe d’Huez and so on must have seen their fair share of it….!

My father calls me "murmeli",

that’s marmot in Finnish.

I always thought it meant something nice, but now I’m not so sure…

Are there any cute marmots or is it just a big insult?

But inscrutable…

Perhaps.

Is it me or

does that marmot look strikingly like Bob Roll?

Seems like a cool life – enjoying the sun, lovely view, avoiding being carried off by a hawk or eagle. That dude looks well fed and happy I’d say.

Sure, they look cute...

From Wikipedia:

Some historians suggest that marmots, rather than rats, were the primary carriers of the Bubonic plague or yersinia pestis during several historic outbreaks. Through this they are credited with a death toll of over a billion, making them second only to the malarial mosquito as a killer of humans.

That shot reminds me of one of those

Agree with majope… cute or not in some pics, that one looks like he’s planning the next attack. :-)
