Gieten tomorrow (was: I may be at Gieten)
I will scrawl "Podium Cafe" on a T-shirt and take a picture. Gieten is part of the Superprestige cyclocross series, so I hope that means Nys, Boom, and Niels Albert. I will be rooting for Boom, because Nys always wins. [update: Boom still recovering from the 'flu, so I don't know whom I should root for. I will have a "get well Niels" sign... could add "and Lars, too, quickly!". Reminder to PdC members: get your flu shot.]
Now, logistics.
Driving in the Netherlands? Hope to avoid that. Assen looks to be about 15 km from Gieten, more or less (depending on where the actual course is). Groningen looks more like 25 km. I found directions to Assen (and they don't even say, "take both hands, reach back.") They include train and bike rental info. However, it appears the train station bike rental will be closed on Sunday. [update: I think (?) we have a hotel room for the evening, and a lead on bikes. Weather is supposed to be freezing mist. Sounds perfect for cross, don't it?]
Anyone happen to know of other bike rental options in Assen? Anyone happen to be familiar with the path, track or bike lane between Assen and Gieten? I figure the way back will be thick with drunk cyclists, but I'd like to know if there will be car traffic to contend with at the same time. Or is there a regular bus, or a special bus bus going to Gieten / Aa en Hunze because of the race?
Finally, who's the beer sponsor at the beer tent for the Superprestige series?

I don't know Assen
but whenever I’ve been to the NL (and Belgium) I’ve been impressed by the number and quality of the cycle paths. Usually if the speed limit is above 50kph (30 miles) then there is a separate cycle path with a physical divide between that and the road. Either that or they send the road a long way round.
So very jealous
For info you might ping the boys at Pez. They helped me out immensely when I went to Flanders and I’m sure they’d have good suggestions for you as well. Give it a try.
"I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass... and I'm all out of bubblegum."
wow, cool idea.
So far my only interaction was asking for a few more women racer pix, and some male distractions. They were not so receptive to that ; )
No, wouldn't expect they would be :-)
Try Ed Hood or Jered Gruber (who raced for Time this year and is their US guy, based out of DC I believe). Ed was a big help to me.

Jered's in Austria now, moved earlier this year
but if you hit his blog, he’ll most likely respond. He occassionaly checks in here too.
Here’s his blog.

A Niels, get well soon sign? Excellent! And let's hope he does.
Do forge my signature….or at least sign it from all at Podium Cafe! Hope he sees it on the telly. Boom I think has actually had a urinary tract infection rather than the flu. According to CN he’s better but has been advised to take another weekend off to make sure.
You're kidding
I’m sure the other guys are very supportive……….not.

Have a great day at the races!
" Well, art is art isn't it? Still on the other hand, water is water! And east is east and west is west and if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does. Now uh . . . Now you tell me what you know." Groucho Marx
I would say enjoy the weather, but it's bound to be total crap right now
That’s the part of the low countries that sucks right now, windy/cold/pancake flat. IOW, crap. But, enjoy the beer and the racing.
If I just had one more gear, I...
Race is on! Belgian TV4.
"I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass... and I'm all out of bubblegum."
Totally fantastic race today, hope you enjoyed it JFS
When you get a chance I’m sure people would love to hear about your experience.
Question – didn’t look like there was much, if any, running on the course (at least from Belgian Tv). True or false?
"I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass... and I'm all out of bubblegum."
We couldn't find a spot where even the kids had hoofed it
So we decided the pros were unlikely to dismount. Pieter thinks such a patch might have existed, but we didn’t get there. Too curvy and technical to call it the rather pejorative “grass crit”…but not entirely unlike.
