Cyclocross Corner

Lots of exciting racing and injuries over the weekend, in both the U.S. and Belguim.

First off, a Superprestige race in Gravere, Belguim on Sunday; better than church.  The Elite men's race, was won by some Belguim guy that wins a lot of those types of races, I think his name is Nijs or Nys.  He was on the podium with his old rival, Bart Wellens and Klaas Vantornout.  Finally, those young guns (Boom and Albert) have had a schooling by the old guard.  But in all fairness Albert was schooled by the course, not the old guard, since he went down in practice on Saturday and tore his spleen in the crash.   This may be karma for his claims about winning Tours without doping being impossible.

Jonathan Page continued to have bad luck finishing 16th, after crashing, breaking a rear deraileur, and puncturing, but he's confident he'll be on the podium again.

Star-divide

I just checked out sporza and saw a highlight from the race.  Looks like pretty gnarly terrain, Wellens even ran a downhill section.  Link: click on wedstrijdverslag, which I think means Highlights?

In the Elite women's race, Katie Compton showed she is the favorite for the world champs, winning the race by over a minute ahead of Daphny Van Den Brand.  Unfortunately, the current world champion Hanka Kupfernagel wasn't around to get a taste of late January.  If Unibet had bets on world championship women's cyclocross I would put my money on Katie.  (They don't, I already checked.)

In the States, there was a USGP weekend in New Jersey.  A muddy race weekend there just like in Belguim, the way it should be.  Tim Johnson won on Saturday ahead of Todd Wells and Ryan Trebon.  Tim crashed in the race and his knee swelled up so bad that he couldn't take the start on Sunday.

Here's what he had to say about the subject, "I’ve never not started a ‘cross race. It was tough to stand and watch from the sidelines."  I wish Tim the most speedy recovery and maybe the time off will do him some good come January.

On Sunday, Todd Wells bested younger brother Troy, with Jeremy Powers holding down the Cyclocrossworld.com fort by making the podium.  It must be nice to be on the podium with your brother, but as we can see Todd wasn't going to give the younger Wells any favors, as older brothers shouldn't and definitely won't.

Georgia Gould won both days in the women's race but I'm convinced Katie would have beat her.

That's it and everyone have a nice Monday.

According to HLN, Albert was going to be released from intensive care today

but has been kept in for monitoring due to some further bleeding from the damaged spleen. I think that’s what it says anyway. An earlier article said he would be out of action for at least two weeks…no word on whether that is now still the case though. Get well soon Niels!

Guess i will NOT be seeing him at Gieten on the 30th.

Maybe I’ll make a “get well” sign, and sign it PdC. Yinz good with that?

I'm good with that. :-)

Can we get Veloki to work on graphics?

Thanks for the quick post brunopitton!

I’d read results but did not know about the injuries. I hope Tim’s knee heals up quickly. And the spleen.. Nasty. That had to be one nasty spill to rupture that.

Apparently, Albert ended up hitting his stem/handlebars.

Tim ruptured a bursa in his knee, hence the swelling. Yeah those injuries sound like no fun at all.

In the Superprestige, just about everyone had a crash, except Nys.

I think I'm glad there's not youtube

popping up showing it.
I’ve heard of those being issues in car accidents,
but can’t say “ruptured spleen” would make me think of a cycling accident.

Thanks Bruno, great wrap

That was a gnarly looking course. Nobody quite does mud and downhills like Belgium.

It seems like the tougher the

course, the better for Nys. His level of consistency reminds of Stenmark in the late 70’s early 80’s in the Alpine Skiing WC. I find myself always rooting for him (after Page of course), just because it is like watching one of the true legends apply his craft. And he seems to really enjoy it to.

It's also nice to see Bart Wellens

riding consistently well again. He’s got a lot of tenacity to him, he and Jens! would get on very well.

Albert's in for a long layoff,

according to CN:

Niels Albert received the news from doctors that he cannot train outside on his bike for six weeks. The Belgian cyclo-cross rider will have no chance for the Superprestige title, GVA trophy or World Cup, and looks unlikely to ride either the Belgian or world championships.

The 22-year-old crashed while warming up for a race in Gavere, Belgium, this weekend, and tore his spleen. He remains in the intensive care unit of the University Clinic in Gent.

Albert’s manager Christoph Roodhooft said Albert may be able to start riding on the roller at home in two weeks, but probably won’t have enough time to get in shape for the championships. “The season is not entirely over, but almost,” he said to sportwereld.be. “Niels can decide himself when he will train outside again, but I don’t want to take any risks.”

This is so sad for him. And I really wanted to see what he could do. I suppose he’ll just have to look to the future; he has so many more years ahead of him!

Thanks. Looks like this was written before the CN thing though.

He’ll probably miss the worlds now. Lets hope for his sake that the spleen heals without the need for surgery as then he’d be out for even longer. Thank goodness they asked for a second opinion from the team doctor though! Racing with a torn spleen would have been a very very bad idea indeed…….

yes...

Just more info and a different perspective. I posted her blog mostly to let peeps know she’s out there. Very entertaining reading, at times!

That so totally blows as I've really enjoyed watching him race, win and suffer

On the upside – nice link Gav
