2010 Tour to start in Rotterdam

It was announced today that the 2010 Tour de France would start in Rotterdam,  which beat out Utrecht for the right to hold Le Tour's Grand Start. Rotterdam was chosen to hold the start because the city showcases the use of bikes for urban transportation. The cities location is also perfect for the route the Tour plans to take in 2010. The Tour will kick off on July 3, an official press conference is scheduled for December 11th, to discuss further details. Well, it's still a long ways away until 2010, so let's enjoy the Tour next year first, and don't forget the Giro route will be announced two days after the Rotterdam announcement, on December 13th.

No, I don't know why it's announced so early

I think it’s just to torture the poor people of Rotterdam. They have them really excited fot the Tour coming there now, but the people have to wait 20 more months for it to happen. Those evil tour people, just pure evil they are.

maybe it's to encourage us all to move to rotterdam

so we’ll be all settled in time for the tour start

If that were the case

than they probably would have held the grand start in Monaco before the economy crumbled. How is anyone expected to buy a house there these days, except the big auto industry bosses who have their private jets and all.

Not confirmed.

But some facts or specualtions about the start in Rotterdam..

Theur first arrival is probaly Roubaix.. Yeah cobbles are on thei way. It is said that the length of the first stage is 225km.

How do they come there? Sealand is a proper translation but in Dutch Zeeland.. , Rotterdam is in Zuid-Holland at the end of the rivir. You are gonna get a lovely view of Dutch’ proud. The dams, probably not the good word, which keep us from drowning.

Last words.. They were represented because they worked with a theme.. Clean air? With the biggest or almost biggest port also a huge industry.. So I never noticed the clean air.. But like I always say.. It’s all relative

Sorry for the small pics.. Google is not my best friend most of the time.

Some say the best things in life, are one the inside.

Ooh cobbles in the Tour

that would be fun. Maybe Boonen and Fabian can get a 20 minute gap on Contador and the other favorites. That would be quite fun, but obviously they aren’t going to make the cobbles that decisive, but one can dream.

Well

I imagine Iban Mayo didn’t think the cobbles were much fun in that one Tour a few years ago. They were pretty decisive to his chances that year (I know, he probably wouldn’t have won anyway, but the cobbles fiasco put paid to any chances he might have had well before they got to the mountains).

I need to learn to read. when I first saw this on Google news last night I thought it said Rotherham.

pounding along in three ratios like a sonata
like a Ritter with pommelled scrotum atra cura on the step
Botticelli from the fork down pestling the transmission
tires bleeding voiding zeep the highway

Ha Ha

I haven’t been able to get the mouse in a windmill song out of my head all day, even though I remembered after a while that it was Amsterdam not Rotterdam.

This video is an attempt to show the ambience at the final hour of the Nice Ironman competition. A lame attempt i'll admit, but wth? If you're ever going to finish towards the end of an ironman, i suggest Nice as the place to do it. The applause and support and general ambience at the end is really remarkable. Dj's, pom-pom girls, people dancing, shouting, dance music blasting ... Some finishers just go on through, others raise their arms or just have a huge smile, one guy did some pushups while the dj counted for him, another did a cartwheel, some ran through with their little kids holding their hands. And this all 8 hours after the winners have finished.

When i went out my door to walk over to see the last hour or so of the Ironman, the first thing i saw was a guy across the street, pushing his triathlon bike, head hanging down to his chest, walking with a pronounced. Painful. Slow. Trudge. Medal around his neck. He'd done well. Hope he felt better the next day.

Then i got to the promenade and started seeing more of the people who'd finished: one guy asleep on the pavement with his wife by his side in all the raucous noise and confusion and crowds everywhere. Then the medical tent - massages, those heat blanket thingies, oxygen, people limping aorund, Oy!

Then every now and then you see a finisher with a medal around their neck who look fresh as a daisy, like they've just had a nice walk in the park.

Then finally you get to the finish line ... and that's the video. At the end there's a fireworks display (no one timed their finish to coincide with it this year) and then apparently a few hundred people stayed all night to party on the prom next to the beach until daybreak.

I could not do an ironman even if i wanted to, but i'll be there again next year to help welcome the last finishers in.
