Quick Note From Mannheim (Formerly Luxor)...

Hey everyone... wish I could post up a picture, but I haven't had any chance to get them out of my cameras into anything that's capable of internet access. The Sheraton only provides high cost access so this is the best I can do. Shame, because I have pictures of an LBS, Cairo style! Anyway, I've been to the Valley of the Kings, Luxor Temple, Edfu, Kom Ombo, Habu Temple, Temple of Philae and dove on Cleopatras palace and the base of the Pharos of Alexandria... so I've been keeping busy. I've also eaten some positively fantastic food... fuul medame, kushary, local falafel with beans not chickpeas, all tasty, tasty, tasty. And the coffee... the coffee is something beyond measure... Turkish, medium sweet. Beautiful. I'll be back in about a week with pics. Hope everything's going well! Now Zoe can't yell at me...

Star-divide

UPDATE NOV-30 - I've successfully made it to Mannheim Germany now and for the first time I have full internet access on my own laptop! So I've uploaded some photos below for you guys. Went to the Weinachtsmarkt in Ladenburg this afternoon and will go to the one in Mannheim tomorrow for a little Christmas shopping, insh'allah.

Helloooo Dan!

Bring me some baklava won’t you? Pleeeez?!

Most important question

Have you been bowling yet?

Funny you should mention that...

… the answer is, sadly, no… however, Luxor did just open up it’s first bowling alley… two lanes!

How sad am I that the first thing I thought of was a hotel in Las Vegas.

by Katiek on Nov 26, 2008 10:20 AM EST   0 recs

Actually

if you read it closely, there’s nothing in his post that proves he’s not in Vegas. I’m going with Vegas.

I thought that too.

In my defense, it is the hotel in which I spent my wedding night (and I’ve never yet made it to Egypt).

by majope on Nov 26, 2008 3:18 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

If you get a room in the pyramid

just behind the sphinx, drink a wee bit, and then look out the window…. the view should cause quite the giggle. ;-)

Didn’t he say he was going to “Egypt”?

Happy Thanksgiving to all the US gang!
Have a wonderful holiday weekend!!!

Falafel with Beans instead of Chickpeas!!!

This intrigues me.

Any recipes?

by DemonCats on Nov 26, 2008 5:09 PM EST   0 recs

Not for the Falafel, although I'm sure the Google can provide reference material...

… but did get instructions on “Bird’s Tongue Soup” (spoiler alert: no bird’s tongues involved), Koshary and Fuul. I’ll share when I get back.

That sounds gross. If it's not birds tongue in it, what is?

"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."

Orzo pasta...

… looks like little bird’s tongues. They must have a surfeit of bird’s tongues laying about since one of the favorite Egyptian meals is stuffed pigeon, which I sadly wasn’t able to partake in… but it looked fantastic.

Hope you share the recipe. :-)

I would never yell but I might scold.

Thanks for the update. Sounds like a fantastic trip. It’ll be interesting to see your pictures. I too saw this post’s headline and immediately thought you meant the Luxor in Vegas. Heh.

I just returned from 4 days in a cabin at Lake Tahoe with 5 teenagers. We had a nice time. Although why do teenegers go to Tahoe to only sit inside and play video games? I finally made them all go outside.

Other than catching them using airsoft guns

to shoot cans off the loft bannister in the house all went well. Well, of course, that is what caught them doing. Wonders what I didn’t catch.

mmm, photos

looking forward to that part…

by gavia on Nov 26, 2008 10:06 PM EST   0 recs

Damn

and here I thought I was going to impress with a few photos of the entrance of a crumbling velodrome in Buenos Aires (tried to get in, then thought better after a man started yelling something involving the world “polícia” many times). Very jealous of the trek, Dan. Enjoy it.

by Sui Juris on Nov 28, 2008 12:50 PM EST   0 recs

I had no idea there was a Velodrome in BA...

… If you’re still there, I HIGHLY recommend the restaurant “”http://www.lasnazarenas.com.ar/" target="new">Las Nazarenas" near Ezmeralda on Reconquista. Look for the waiter that looks like the Argentine version of Marty Feldman!

Actually...

… I spent about 10 minutes while my family was just standing around, getting the light metering right so that the back sky wouldn’t blow out as white entirely and as I finally got it all dialed in right, this guy just stepped right in front of me and walked down the aisle between the columns far enough to walk dramatically through the light and then made a right turn and I never saw him again.

Right place, right time, right equipment, right application. In my experience, it happens very, very, very infrequently.
