Holiday Open Thread
Thursday is Thanksgiving in the US. [Is it possible to live outside the US and not hear about our major holidays? Am thinking no...] To our US readers, Happy Thanksgiving! Enjoy the day, be it about family, celebrating the harvest, watching football, or a chance to get your miles in. Everyone else, just understand that for once we're celebrating something besides our differences with the King of England. Something even better: food. For more information, see this painting:

We are actually rebelling, by...
going to NYC to see Cirque de Soleil and eat Chinese food in Chinatown.
Racing for Victory and Free Beer!
And suddenly thoughts of Christmas Story. Hmmmm... Chinese.
"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."
I was wondering when it was,
I had heard comments coming out about thanksgiving, but wasn’t sure when it was celebrated…
We don't stop playing because we grow old, we grow old because we stop playing.

Fourth Thursday in November
So a different date every year.
We’re running a 4.5-mile Drumstick Dash in the morning, then having lamb for Thanksgiving dinner. We almost never eat red meat at home, so it’s more of a treat than turkey.
Happy Thanksgiving to all who celebrate it! The rest of you, have a nice day at work.
Never been that big of a turkey fan myself...
it’s a bland bird. Although I have yet to try it deep-fried.
Also, I’ve heard heritage turkeys are supposedly tastier.
Although I LOVE deep fried duck!
Racing for Victory and Free Beer!
It's a scrawny turkey...
like the pilgrims ate, not the big ass birds you see on the store.
Racing for Victory and Free Beer!
if you've ever seen the nantucket (?)
it named after an eastern region, and scrawny it ain’t… them thar wild ones is pretty tough pickins though…… them wild uns is pretty smart too.

real turkeys
Massachusetts is crawling with wild turkeys these days. They’re not small, but obviously not morbidly obese either.

My absolutely favorite holiday
because it isn’t religious and it doesn’t have any relation to gift giving. Thanksgiving is one day dedicated to being simply thankful. Its lovely.
I am cooking and my kids, their fiances and boyfriends, and my father will be here. Yeah!
(Most of the kids work retail so all of us having a day off on the same day is a celebration in itself.)
Hope all of you who are celebrating will enjoy it as much as I am.
Also, fancy graphic Chris. I like the sparklies.
sorry to bubble burst
but while the secularized contemporary version isn’t overtly religious, for the original participants (both Wampanoag and English) it assuredly was.
And the New England Thanksgiving celebrations that became institutionalized in the 19th century started off as overtly Christian days of thanks. (Remember, Massachusetts didn’t get around to officially separating church from state until the 1830s when the last parish ministers stopped receiving tax-payer based salaries. Connecticut was similarly slow to put the constitution into practice on that point).
Pace WIkipedia, Lincoln, after some serious prodding by Sarah Josepha Hale (Of Mary Had a Litle Lamb fame, and, along with Catharine Beecher (Harriet’s sister), one of the ur-Martha Stewarts), declared the first national T-giving day for 1863.
Ditto.
Favorite for me too. Love that it’s not all about gifts and money and such that sometimes comes with Christmas. Plus it’s usually like a 4 day weekend so a nice break. I love the cooking and just together time with friends and family.
But Chris… you forgot the drinking that goes on. Good stuff. Nice lunch/dinner spread. Football. Cards. Games. Drinks. Drinks. And maybe even some more. (you know… to help get through all that fun loving friends and family time. ha ha!)
"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."
Ha, yeah.
I have almost always avoided it. Currently my mother is trying to talk me into driving her tomorrow for something. She had foot surgery and pulling the “daughter not home enough” strings to get me to do it. I probably will but might use the, I’ll stay in the car to keep it warm and drop you off and pick you up right at the door. I laugh at people that get up at those ungodly hours and become psychotic with the sales. Now mother is trying to get me to help her become part of it. ugh.

Woohoo!
One more and we set the record. Come on guys!

Halloween is much bigger outside the USA I think..
But Happy Thanksgiving! If it’s today
Some say the best things in life, are one the inside.
Well I’m going with tradition, and a full turkey dinner which is particularly nice since I’m not doing any of the cooking or cleaning. My family knows my culinary talents, and always ask me just to bring cider or something else easy to purchase.
But happy day to everyone celebrating – no matter how you celebrate. And pizza is certainly something to be thankful for!
Happy Thanksgiving all you other-side-of-the-Atlantic-people!
Enjoy your heritage turkeys while I slave away at work ;-)
Speaking of turkeys
Got this picture on an early morning ride along the Mississippi River. Three turkeys hanging out under power lines.
anyone else ever
had to slaughter turkeys? done the old-fashioned way, one at a time and by hand, it ain’t fun. and they are not the brightest or prettiest critters. all of this makes centering a holiday on the consuming of them strange fare indeed…
Is this a sign?
from LA’s twitter thingy
“And yes, I will twitter from the tour, the giro, the ToC, and the TdU. Hell, I seem to be twittering a lot”
I don’t know if that means anything, but could this have been an accidental slip up from LA, and he already knows he will ride the Tour? Ooh the mystery, unless he’s going to the Tour even if he’s not riding, ah who knows.

I've celebrated Thanksgiving
by eating yams several times this week. Not that bad actually.
Carlos Sastre - Tour de France winner - Born From Jets
Completely off topic....I'm currently watching a pelota match on Basque TV (as you do)
and am a little confused…..one team has two players and the other has three! What’s going on? If Igor or Haimar are lurking here, can they please clear this up?!
Happy thanksgiving!
Happy Thanksgiving. For us here in Europe it feels like having two X-mas. Cheers,
