Hottitude Makes Wikipedia

This is truly a great day. The Cafe's obsession with Bennati's hottitude is now enshrined in his Wikipedia entry for all the world to see.

Daniele Bennati (born September 24, 1980 in Arezzo) is an Italian professional road racing cyclist specialising in fast sprint finishes. In 2008, he rides for UCI ProTeam Liquigas. His hottitude is the subject of much admiration to many who post on the awesome cycling blog podiumcafe, where the neologism "bennalanche" had to be coined to describe the mass posting of pictures of Bennati that invariably follow upon mention of his name.

Did I mention that this is a great day? The only thing missing is my *#@&ing Pinarello.

Please feel free to illustrate this post as necessary.

where's the hottitude?

Someone needs to edit that page. It’s missing his most important characteristic. Sprinter, climber, blah blah. Serious threat in the hottitude classification. Where’s that part?

by Jen See on Dec 11, 2008 7:38 PM EST up reply actions

Wait... how did he get in here. There's no Cafe mentioned on his page.

I mean really. I do like his “bike” and all but really. Cycling is ALL about the CAFE? No?

Or maybe, Piti is so hot that having 2 different rims, make it hot? I can’t decide.

Or perhaps someone was testing how Bennalaches distract certain parties from noticing such obvious errors.

Either way, great eye!

This isn't a great day, this is a truly sad day

the very credible reputation of Wikipedia has just been shattered. Just a shame, a damn shame.

The current version is pretty good too

Daniele Bennati (born September 24, 1980 in Arezzo) is an Italian professional road racing cyclist specialising in fast sprint finishes. In 2008, he rides for UCI ProTeam Liquigas. Although there are only a few witnesses who may have overheard this comment, and it might never have been made.

I'd love to say it's not but really, it is.

However – one should note now that Cyclegirl has brought in a points systems there’s reason for concern. I am pretty sure I can locate pics of the Garmin guys with out tops on and most, if not all, have a website scoring themselves some points. And for those that can update and write pretty often, they should get bonus points. (Thinking Michael Barry on Columbia deserves a bonus point there anyways as that man can write better than most of the riders combined. And I know where to find a pic of him and C with out their shirts on.)

"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."

by nikki on Dec 12, 2008 10:53 AM EST up reply actions

We're not counting individual riders' sites are we?!

Surely actual physical hottitude should be awarded the most points. That is after all, the main thing!

by Albertina on Dec 12, 2008 11:05 AM EST up reply actions

Agree that should be the highest.

But for sites/blogs etc, it should be one per rider for the team up to the set limit (10 right?). Teams with riders doing the most for their fans should certainly get points over a team that say only has one good looking rider doing nothing to help the fans keep tabs? right? And the same with pics. One point per rider found (not # of pics of a rider). Cyclegirl is running this so she can decide but I’m thinking it’s a no brainer and slam dunk of other items aren’t considered.

"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."

by nikki on Dec 12, 2008 11:28 AM EST up reply actions

Let's not forget this is a

hottest team smackdown. Having lots of pics on your website demonstrating a lack of hotitude should not be equivalent to true hotness. And while I admire writing ability as much as anyone (not that you can tell from my posts here), is that really relevant in a hottest team contest?

While the pen might be mightier than the sword, when it comes to hotness smackdown, I fear the pen is not mightier than hair gel.

by Katiek on Dec 12, 2008 7:15 PM EST up reply actions

I agree I agree.

I have no sense of humour??

Well, I love the humour on this site and all the hotitude threads, but please, please, do not transfer it to wikipedia. (As a matter of fact, I did notice the edits via this thread, not via wikipedia.) Some of us are trying to maintain an encyclopedia with facts and figures about cyclists and others, so please leave all the comments about the cyclists’s appearance and hotness here. Btw, the Bennati-entry on enwiki has two (2!) sentences about him (+ palmares). Maybe I could challenge any of you Benna-fans to expand the article, by translating from the longer French or Italian?

If we had messed it up and made things a joke, I’d be sorry but we are not bad peeps. We love our riders and that bit of fun probably got his page more hits in one day than it saw in a month. Plus many learned that you can update with real facts and wins and such so it had a good result.

Challenge accepted!

Ok, I was inspired to go to the French Wikipedia entry for Benna and (loosely) translate the rather long bio that can be found there. I then discovered that there was no coverage of 2008, and so pieced some together. So now Benna’s entry is probably longer than Eddy Merckx’s. However, I am not good at the photo stuff, and someone needs to find some good public domain pics and insert them into the entry – if only to substantiate the penultimate sentence as I left it!

Sur la Plaque!

Scanning through the "Big Photographs" from today's stage 7 of the Giro on Steephill (worth a look after every stage) and I noticed, on this image - whose caption describes "Niemec about to launch Lampre-ISD teammate Michele Scarponi on the steepest (10%) part of the climb" - that both Lampre cyclists are in the big chain ring.
