Triple Crown of PA cancelled

This comes as a huge dissapointment for many of us in the Mid Atlantic. Having lived in and now outside of Reading, PA for the last ten years, I can tell you that even the people in town who do not follow professional cycling or have any interest in watching a bike race used this day ( a day where the city virtually shut-down to hold the race ) as a giant celebration. Race day street parties would go on into the night over the past three years and everyone seemed to make the absolute most out of the city streets being emptied of traffic, whether it be to BBQ, throw a football around or watch the race itself.
Hopefully the city finds another sponsor within the next month, but given the current economy, this seems unlikely. Both the race in Allentown ( moved from Lancaster last year ) and Reading ( which had replaced Trenton, NJ three years ago ) are cancelled. Philly has a much better chance of securing a sponsor if TD Bank steps out, which still has not been confirmed. Keep your fingers crossed !!

Let This Be The First Warning Shot...
…that cycling is in for some rough times over the first two quarters (or more) of 2009. Sponsorship of teams, events, etc., is going to be in doubt.
If Tiger Woods can lose a sponsor (Buick), anyone can.

Woods/Buick
Hadn’t heard that. Interesting. Must have been awkward. “Buick, you’re leaving me?? I’m Tiger mother)((*#@ Woods! My brand is waaaay better than yours!”
CN made this news
seem like fairly positive news, the Allentown event might still happen, and Philly seems like it’s a guarantee for next year, so all is not lost. Seeing that article came from the Reading paper it is no surprise they are very bummed by this, and so am I but at least Philly will stay, or so it appears.

I would say that the chances of the first two races happening are pretty slim
given the economy right now finding a new sponsor in 2 months is extremely difficult.
But heck it’s the season for hope.
