Open Thready: Happy Friday!

Gav_medium Chris is sitting in an airport somewheres, and Gav is working on a Gossip column. It'll be up lates, after I feed Coppi and Bartali, tidy up the joint, caffeine-ate thoroughly, and erm, get in my miles.

In the meantime, talk amongst yourselves.

Subject: Bike racing and stuff.

I've just ventured onto Twitter for the first time...

Probably a dumb question, but how the heck do you find people?

but is there any way of searching for profiles?

here’s my list of pro cycling peeps on Twitter. At least the ones I know of.

Well seeing we have to wait for the Gossip

I might as well list Astana’s lineup for the TdU
Lance Armstrong, Assan Bazayev, Jesus Hernandez, Michael Schar, Maxim Iglinskiy, Steve Morabito and Jose Luis Rubiera.
From VN, yeah after all that bitching VN finally posted something useful this week.

By the way, since this is an open friday thread and since

I can not brag about my bike racing skillz (don’t have those) I can use this opportunity to brag about how my fabulous casserole (Chile Chicken) won the “Best Main Dish” category at the office potluck yesterday. About 150 people vote every year. Its a tradition. I beat out the boss’s Weinerschnitzel dish. Feeling quite accomplished today.

Now if only I could get the holiday gifts sitting in my bedroom wrapped before the holiday all would be good.

And tonight is my daughter’s 21st birthday party. Not a busy time of the year in my household. Not at all.

Way to score Zoe!

Are you going to share said dish? The name sounds pretty yummy!!!!

I thought

they already have moved some of southern California to Mexico. Or could that just seem that way because of the influx of illegal immigrants over the years? Hmm…….nope, I think San Diego is now in Mexico.

by Jen See on Dec 19, 2008 8:25 PM EST up reply actions

It's not politics

it’s a fact that there has been an influx of illegal immigration in Cali over the years. One can feel how they want about that, and what to do about it, I’ll leave that to them to decide.

and trust me, after the long political campaign I don’t want to talk politics. If I really wanted to, I would have made a political point, I just made a little joke, Btw I have nothing at all against Mexicans and I love San Diego, it’s a beautiful city.

Um, some of us think there has been a re-introduction

being as a lot of the people in question are spanish-speaking but genetically darn-near pure indio. Also, those who grew up in So Cal (or some of us) learned about the mass roundups and purges that trucked people down over the border several times both before and after statehood, and the stealing of the haciendas. (No surprise, right, given the place names?)

No, I’m not debating it here, just pointing out that one’ s appreciation of societal change is really, really dependent on time scale (never mind one’s own social allegiances).

new re-discovery

hummus is dirt cheap (yes, that’s a humus joke) if you make it yourself starting with dried garbanzos, and you can make it as thick as you like (Does the supermarket stuff have more water and air whipped into it recently, or does it just taste that way?) I got a pressure cooker in the fall, and all sorts of slow-cook foods and beans are now very quick and easy. (I’m also enjoying the home-pickled dill-garlic string beans. I used some balsamic vinegar, so they look gross, but taste extra-good.)

ok, it exists. Here’s more. It’s fast, and there must be extra drama within the team. So why is it the red-headed stepchild of both road and track racing? Anything outside the US?

It’s supposed to get nasty cold Sunday—probably won’t rain, but we REALLY need it.

Hey RMc, this brings up a good point

Im thinkng of getting rollers this winter – any suggestions? Price point would be under $250

"I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass... and I'm all out of bubblegum."

by Drew Davis on Dec 19, 2008 7:08 PM EST up reply actions

this is where people who know me

roll their eyes and walk away politely . . .

For under $250 . . . that’s tough. I think most at that price point are fairly equivalent.

If you know you’ll be riding for a while, though, I’d argue that it’s worth getting a set of Kreitler 2.5" drums—they provide resistance as well as the roller workout.

Even better, if you can find them, are some of the American Classic rollers with the 4 1.25" drums for the rear wheel. You might be able to scare some of those up on ebay.

The absolute best, for combining resistance and rollers, though, are the ancient American Classics with 6 1.25" drums (2 for the front wheel, 4 for the rear). At 105psi, I think 14-15 mph is around 220 watts . . . They are impossible to find, though.

by R Mc on Dec 19, 2008 9:49 PM EST up reply actions

I can appreciate the resistance factor

but I’ve got my Tacx Flow for that, with wattage. The rollers are going to be more for change of pace, pedal work, balance, and the sprint factor. Hence the desire not to go too far overboard in price.

Thanks for the for the feedback, I’ve heard excellent things about the Kreitlers.

"I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass... and I'm all out of bubblegum."

by Drew Davis on Dec 20, 2008 7:19 AM EST up reply actions

ja

kreitlers are pretty much the ones. worth the money, if you’re really going to ride the things.

by Jen See on Dec 20, 2008 12:23 PM EST up reply actions

There's a really lonely cycleops

trainer in our garage.

I can not stand trainers. So, rollers with good resistance means I don’t have to ride the trainer.

Open Thread? I lay the Linzer Torte smackdown then...

My favorite desert in the whole wide world… I don’t make it was well as my mom did, but I’m getting close. Only made during the Christmas season… without further ado…

Ingredients (Makes Two Tortes)
450 g Flour
450 g Butter
450 g Sugar
450 g Ground Almonds (or hazelnuts)
1 ½ tsp Cocoa
Â˝ tsp Ground Cloves (1 ½ messerspitz for you Germans out there)
3 Tbsp Kirshwasser (optional – my mom always omitted it and I prefer it without)
5 Tbsp Raspberry Jam
1 Egg Yolk for Egg Wash (optional – again, mom omitted it and I prefer it without)

Preparation
Chill butter
Sift flour and cut butter into it (you can use a big honkin food processor for this)
Add remaining dry ingredients
Knead to form a dough ball (one doughball = one Torte)
Separate doughball into equal halves and let rest for at least one hour in the refrigerator
Roll dough to 1cm thick to form the cake base. Using 9" spring form base as guide cut the dough to size
Grease the spring form base and transfer the circle of dough onto it. Assemble spring form
Add a 1cm thick rim around the edge of the cake base to form a well
Fill the well with the Raspberry Jam
Roll out the remaining dough to about 3/4 cm thick
Cut into strips to create lattice work or use a cookie cutter / champagne flute to create leaves
Lay lattice work or leaves of dough onto the jam in a suitable pattern
Bake at 170deg C (~350F) for about 1 hour (until golden brown)

Allow the cake to rest about 15 minutes before undoing the spring form. Additionally, it’s best to let the finished cake rest for up to 3 days prior to serving so that the baked product can rehydrate a little.

by crashdan on Dec 22, 2008 12:13 PM EST up reply actions

I go mostly hazelnuts...no cocoa...and you have to keep the dough cold as you cut in the butter...

…or the texture goes to hell. No ammount of re-chilling brings it back, either. Put the Kirsch in the whipped cream you serve with it, if anywhere. I might try sneaking in a little cardamom, too.

Fun fact: Cloves are kruidnagel (plant nails?) in Dutch. Yet more of my otherwise useless Kitchen Dutch, as opposed to being able to carry on a conversation. Like Restaurant French.

Kirsch is best used in Kirsch and Kahlua chocolate stars. Combine ground toasted hazelnuts, superfine white sugar, good quality cocoa, kirsch and Kahlua (or cheaper coffee-based alcohol at your own risk) “to taste.” Bind together with raw egg whites (pasteurized eggs, nowadays) until it holds together well enough to roll / mush, and the crunch of the sugar softens a bit. Dust with some more of the sugar to allow rolling. Cut with cookie cutters, and place between layers of wax paper in a cool place to dry (or and equilibrate, as the sugar disolves further). No baking, no butter.

Made right, these are very, very boozy. I can’t make them this year because half of my party guests this year are in recovery, and another quarter probably should be. Sigh.

… hadn’t had them since I was a kid and I really like them now (not so much as a youngun’). I am now curious to see what a Linzer Torte made with Hazelnuts and Red Current jam would taste like. (wonders if he has the energy any more.)

Bon Hiver! Snow Snow Snow!

Got 5 inches Wednesday and a foot last night-this morning, 4 more inches tomorrow and 5F (-15C) temps and 2-4 more inches Sunday. Overnight low -10F. I love Wisconsin! Bon Hiver! (Good Winter!)

Doing a Christmas Bird Count tomorrow too – Outside on snow shows from 6:30AM til 4:30PM. Actually similar weather to last year at this time. It is always fun to be out in the snowshoes tramping around. It will be good skiing (cross country here) for Christmas week and that is good.

This is winter like I remember…have seen no bikes but I am sure some are putting on their spiked wheels.

Hey, where you doing the birdie thingy?

I’m heading North in a couple days. Considered going xcountry skiing one day but not sure my brother and niece will be up for it. Maybe just a hike over to the lake and hitting Kettle Moraine. At least you got the snow, and not the ice mix we did here. The shoveling thing has caused me to use up a whole lot a Motrin today.

Bird Count at Riveredge Nature Center

Newburg – Just east of West Bend. Then going to a party in Port Washington later that night. My lower right back is somewhat sore right now for whatever reason … Skiing should be good in North Kettle Morraine area. I would do it Sunday, but I think I might just be shoveling again. I do have my old mountain bike up on the stand, but I’d much rather ski or whatever if I can.

by Markk on Dec 19, 2008 8:31 PM EST up reply actions

I sadly so know where that is!

I’ll be headed through Port. I’ve stopped at Beanies for lunch a time or two. Yummy. Grew up in Sheboygan County and have friends all over the place up there.

I managed to shovel correctly today so no sore back but bruised my hands pretty good breaking through the ice layers. Two huge deep blisters surrounded by a bruise on both hands. I hate ice. I would seriously take a foot and a half of snow over the ice mix.

"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."
