So CNN is reporting that Lance is having a baby with someone we've never seen him with.
Thumbs up to to Lance for having a lower profile relationship.
Thumbs down for timing. (Baby's anticipated arrival is in June.) Coming out of retirement to ride the Tour is definitely a creative way to stay out of the delivery room!

What, that's great timing
right in between the Giro and Tour, if Bert had it his way the baby would have been born in July. So is he having it with Mary-Kate or Ashley?(i’m just joking, yes I know it’s with his gf Anna, although I had no idea he had a gf)

Congratulations to them both and I agree with the article that it sounds like it offers hope to other survivors of that cancer with hopes of someday having a family.

Glad you posted this cg. I seem to be all things Lance and Twitter lately
and it was getting embarrassing. I was hoping someone would get this up. No word from Lance on his twitter though. Maybe he is over the Hollywood starlets. He kept this relationship under wraps for awhile.
Hope CNN has double checked their sources.

he’s even written some articles for them, so I don’t think they would want to potentially embarrass him and post a false announcement like this.

As the parent of 3 under 6, the youngest being 14 months, my first thought was that Lance must have looked at his year ahead and decided, “this is all looking too easy, how can I make it more challenging?”

Armstrong and Hansen, however, are expecting without the use of any artificial fertilization process. “This is a hopeful thing for testicular cancer survivors,” CNN medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta said. “It means his body healed from the chemotherapy and surgery.”

Except that a) it's been well documented and
b) “Certain chemotherapy treatments have been shown to increase the chance of having a fetus with more or less than the normal number of chromosomes. Damage to the structure of chromosomes in sperm of cancer patients may also occur. It is believed that most of the damage is not permanent, but some studies have detected higher than normal levels of abnormal sperm years after the end of chemotherapy.” Statistically, there’s not supposed to be an increase in the number of kids with detectable chromosomal damage, which means it is supposedly safe to assume that the good sperm to outrace the bad ones, despite possibly having more bad ones.

nope, not so.
See link. Maybe he’s thought he was shooting blanks, between the uniball and the chemo, but it doesn’t work that way. Probably modestly higher risk of birth defects (that’s my “semi-informed supposition” not a result of the study) though presumably not as high as for a woman post-cancer (difference between generation of sperm and eggs).

Not many guys made infertile by loosing a testicle and chemo/radiation are fathering children the old fashion way. Maybe she’s a really smooth talker. “Yeah Lance, of course it’s yours”. Get the test first dude.

Trust, would be nice. Me, I’m old fashioned. I’d like to see them get married, commit to raising the child as a couple as much as that is possible in today’s world, you know? I’d like to see Lance be a role model for couples in this regard as much as a role model for athleticism and cancer survivorship.

It's possible, my wife and I are raising two but
I don’t believe that raising children requires marriage. If the parents can’t make it work, it is better for the children to see two happy but separate parents than married parents that make each other and the children miserable.

if he WANTS to be the/a father...
then not taking a DNA test seems like a fine answer. (The rate of [ahem] non-paternity in some of the human genetics pedigrees? Rather startlingly high. Yet no evidence that the fathers and kids involved were any less loving than the ones whose DNA matched.)

Also agree that raising children does not require marriage. Actually, who am I to even be speculating about this. I feel totally stupid to even be commenting on the man’s private life in the first place. And no, this is not a comment on any one else’s comments, comment away and I’ll read with interest. It’s a personal thing with me, to stay out of other people’s private business. (Where’s that fucking undo button?)

actually, not true (ie. "not many...")
from a 2005 study about this, “Researchers tracked fatherhood in more than 1,800 testicular cancer survivors…A total of 554 men said they tried to father a child after their cancer treatment. More than two-thirds (68%) succeeded at becoming biological fathers.
Most did so without medical assistance. However, 12 men used banked sperm.”
It does go on to say that the odds were better for men who hadn’t had high-dose chemo (I’m guessing that LA probably had high-dose given the advanced nature of his cancer) … so yet again, it would appear he beat the odds, but certainly not out of the realm of possibility.

LA had very high dose chemo for it’s day….but it is now the definitive treatment for TC in young men. We have one guy in the flatbaggers club that biologically fathered twins with his last root before he had No2 removed and have many nutless guys that have used their banked sperm to add to their joy of life. I sold mine :-)
