Around SBN: Clippers Need To Realize That Spurs Are The Anti-Grizzlies

Just checking...

I actually have nothing to say but I am pretty bored here at work. The shoe starts to drop here on Wednesday and continues to slip further and further down until we are buried by mid-late February here. I just figured I would test out the Bennalanche theory and see if we get any responses or if I can find someone to chatter with. No FB today for me so my usual chats have to wait until tomorrow.

Here's a shot to check to see if the whole theory is real or if the guys just are trying to make us look silly. We don't actually have a longing for Benna and the guys do we?

*This photo belongs to Sui Juris and rumor - or maybe it was soft whispers into his ear? - has it that he has this one hot marked for us PdC girls so we will always be able to find it.

Oh and Gavia... my brother and I were chatting about North Shore and such last Friday. Serious way of life there and even he agreed Kelly is a man's man. ha ha!

Speaking of surfing... I TiVoed and watched "Riding Giants" on HDNET Movies channel

last week. Watching gorgeous men surfing giant waves in HD is stunning and mezmerizing. Plus it is a documentary about the history of big wave riding and surfing in general. of course, I am no expert in surfing but it won the Eddie Award given for Cinema Editing Excellence.

Here is its IMDB page: http://bit.ly/QuVX

Question for the surfers

how does a surfer decide which side of a wave to surf out of, meaning to the right or the left? Is it geography that dictates it? or?

by ZoeRochelle on Dec 29, 2008 3:32 PM EST up reply actions

A lot of it has to do with geography.

Most waves break best in one direction, and some only in one direction. There are breaks that do both ways, for instance Pipeline is left and the same wave going right is called Backdoor. Gav please correct me if I’ve got it switched, as I always get confused on my rights and lefts!

by Veloki on Dec 29, 2008 4:54 PM EST up reply actions

Hey Veloki....

Put your hands out in front of you….
The hand that makes an “L” with the pointer finger and thumb….
Well, that one’s your left hand – ’kay?

tee hee.

"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."

by nikki on Dec 29, 2008 4:57 PM EST up reply actions

yes!

Pipe is left, Backdoor is right :-)

You decide depending on the nature of the break and in the case of Pipeline, the swell angle. The waves come in from a different direction depending on where the storm that makes them is – that’s true everywhere. At Pipe, the swells hit the reef differently depending on swell direction – and something called period (which is a tad complicated0 – and that determines whether the right or the left is better. Basically, you stand on the beach and look at the waves. Whichever way looks like it has a longer ride – ie, you see the wave longer before it gets all white watery and foamy – is the way you go. In SoCali at your average beach break, there are more Lefts in summer, because the swells come from the south and more rights in winter, because the storms come from the north. A pointbreak will always break right or left, depending on how it faces. Except Trestles, but that’s sorta differentlike.

The pros can go both ways equally. For the rest of us, it depends on which foot is your front foot. It’s harder to surf with your back to the wave – so for right handers (regular foot), going left is more difficult. Lefties (goofy foot) live to go left.

LOL, more than you wanted to know, eh?

Exactly the kind of answer I wanted. Interesting stuff.

I have always loved watching surfing competitions on TV, even as a child.

by ZoeRochelle on Dec 29, 2008 6:12 PM EST up reply actions

they live stream all the major pro contests

they stream the women too, which is extra sweet

I watched Mavericks streaming this year.

I have thought about going but figured it is so far offshore I wouldn’t see anything.

I am right handed when I write but play cards left handed

well okay I guess that does make me goofy

by lyne on Dec 29, 2008 8:38 PM EST up reply actions

ja

lots of right-handed writers are goofy surfers – they don’t always go together. odd, that.

by Jen See on Dec 29, 2008 8:44 PM EST up reply actions

you're both goofy..

i should know, I’ve met you both. I’m a goofy too. But even better, I throw right, but kick a ball left. I was a natural lefty as a lacrosse player. I can bat both side of the plate in stick and ball sports. Finally I always wanted to go clockwise when I raced.

If you can find it, you should try and find

Five Summer Stories. One of the classic surf films of all time, based in the early 1970’s.

by Veloki on Dec 29, 2008 5:15 PM EST up reply actions

This could be my mission for tomorrow's lovely work day.

I might try my library. Surprisingly they have some great stuff on hand. I tend to borrow from there before I rent or buy elsewhere unless I know I like it, then I shop quickly. :-) Only delay may be that is most likely all on VHS and honestly, I’m not sure I have a VHS player at the moment. I need to check. I think I do. Crap.

Vee!

You need to find yourself a copy of One Track Mind Very cool interviews, beautifully shot footage – on film! – and some cool animation. There’s also a bonus short that is freakin’ hysterical with the animation guy.

I’ll lend you my copy at Tour of Cali if you don’t score it before then. I totally thought of you watching the animation thingy, though :-)

by Jen See on Dec 30, 2008 11:38 AM EST up reply actions

There's a great animation in Five Summer Stories too

I’ve got it on VHS. I’m going to order it on DVD soon.

That sounds like a fun way to kill a few hours.

I wish I wasn’t so bored but my gosh, I seriously am. Ugh! I’ve been taking quizes, reading up on other sites I haven’t been to in months. It’s very sad here. I should be busy working and just can not do it.

On a watching whim… last night I got sucked into the history channel. Watched a bit on Hitler’s failed assination and then another on boot legging. The totally sad thing, I would prefer to be watching them again right now than trying to hunt down things to keep me busy.

At least tonight will be better – or it better be. A couple friends and I are going to see Jeff Dunham. Should be worth some good giggles for sure. :-)

"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."

by nikki on Dec 29, 2008 3:30 PM EST reply actions

That's just crazy.

The waves are too big to paddle into, so let’s have the wave runner drop us off? Yikes. And then add in some bungee jumping? I think I’ll stick to watching the smaller waves. My brother said at his place this past weekend waves were about 10-12 feet. High enough.

You comment above made me smile. Here I was thinking that Benna had a calendar out. OMG. How sweet and heavinly would that be? We should look into making some and Chris could add a few to the prize vault.

On a similar ntoe, well in speaking of calendars anyway, C is Mr. October in Graham Watson’s 2009 calendar. I saw it the night I had drinks with some of the family. C looks good. I can’t wait for my new one to come in, but not in a huge hurry as Mr. Hincapie is currently on my door as I head out to the garage as Mr. December 2008. :-)

The Belgian Mafieeuuu have eyes everywhere....you have been Silenced

Dear CycleGirl…..We have been watching this thread closely in reference to your written requests for us to change the schedule of our prized fighters to suit your vacation plans. We were waiting on a reply to our offers and even considering allowing Phillipe to perhaps accompany you on a pre run of the Paris Roubaix course as a training ride for you on your new Bike.
However…..it seems you are perhaps a little fickle when it comes to men in lycra and would even be ‘amused’ watching some skinny old bald guys go hammer and tongs in a local Veterans crit race perhaps.
We suggest if you want to watch the Italians at some of the early season Classics that you perhaps ride along at the back of the field to keep them company during the race. We have now closed the file on any consideration of accommodating your requests……but the offer of the flat beer and soggy mayonnaise soaked chips and fishy stuff still active.
The Boss (and not that little Queenslander type prick who thought he was the boss when he rode for us)

errrr....am i supposed to sign this??

by Flatbagger on Dec 29, 2008 6:14 PM EST up reply actions

Dear Boss

Sorry to hear you have closed the file and that my request for Philippe to attend the classics when i was there is no longer being considered..
But what you fail to forget is that philippe would have been the one who would have benefiting from catching up with me.. You see the riders I meet are so overcome with meeting me, that they perform well the next day, Just look at Fabian at the TT TdF.. hehehe (oh and he did win it, as Schumie is a drug cheat)
So i’m sure when i meet up with ‘The Italians’ as you say it.. They will be kicking some ass, and you will be looking back going, if only we sent philippe to meet up with CycleGirl..

and actually I’m looking forward to seeing that little prick race this year, but i’m sure a few of the belgiums on his team may kick his ass too…

Regards
CycleGirl..

I just got a phone phone call from a co-worker who is also a close friend

she works on the Personnel Office at work. She found out today that the Chief of Staff is looking for more positions to eliminate. They say it like the “positions” aren’t people. She was told we need to “look alive” when the COS is around. Whatever. This current administration is the worst ever. They treat their staff horribly.

I keep saying to myself that if I get layed-off I’ll file bankruptcy and go on unemployment. A whole cycling season of watching Live racing! Woo hoo!

I can't believe...

I missed this whole thread this afternoon! I was bored out of my head and work all afternoon just babysitting an empty office. This would have been much more fun! I’ll need to monitor more closely tomorrow.

lol

we’ll have to make sure there’s something fun to do tomorrow, too :-)

I so hope to have some more help tomorrow.

Today was awful. Poor Zoe and me trying to stir up some fun all alone.

Huge thanks gang as I had 127 new comments to read tonight.

I can’t wait until tomorrow. Should be fun.

Can we pull together all the ToC stuff again? I am looking and rereading the awesome Gav notes and my head hurts. That 2nd half of that thing sucks with commutes. I’m thinking one way ticket into LAX and one way ticket out of San Diego – maybe. Damn decisions.

by nikki on Dec 30, 2008 1:15 AM EST reply actions

Can you do Burbank or Santa Barbara instead of LAX?

The drive from LAX to Solvang area is pretty lame-o. One way tix would be a pretty good way to do it, if you can swing it. It is a lot of driving at the south end, but if you are flying out of SD, that eliminates some of it, for sure. And SD is a relatively easy airport to get to.

Start a fanpost and we can chat about it more, if you want :-)

I remember full well that he rode for Phonak,

only he didn’t much did he? He got glandular fever or something that year. Yellow and green…bleugh.

#5 was Kelly Slater. Sweet.

I enjoy watching Apolo skate (just did actually this afternoon on Universal Sports coverage of speed skating) but I’m not sure I’d put him in the top 10. And then they have Alberto in #9. Clearly they did not ask the ladies of the Cafe. And I’m sure we’d have been more than willing to keep open minds and allow all sports fair shots. I’m pretty okay with Lochte being in the mix. :-)

Lochte...mmmm, I'd forgotten about him.

One reason to watch swimming. I’m also slightly partial to Aaron Peirsol actually.

by Albertina on Jan 2, 2009 4:41 AM EST up reply actions

Bert above Benna?! What's that all about then?

And no Boonen? That’s got to be wrong. I quite like the look of that Asier Maeztu, the track cyclist though. Why have I never heard of him? Never been a fan of Nadal’s looks….he’s not a patch on Fernando Lopez.

by Albertina on Jan 2, 2009 4:46 AM EST up reply actions

I have a thing for Alberto too...

But they could have used a much better pic of Benna… But not only the top 25 but the top 15…. Awesome… Two road Cyclist I say thats sweet… BUt some in the Top 25 umm definately not my type..

But for some reason i didn’t get the Top 5.. who were they??

I showed the link to some

friends who are not cycling fans and noted my surprise that Alberto was above Benna. I even showed them some other Benna pics because the one Universal had wasn’t the best, but they were unanimous in picking Bert ahead of Benna – mainly because of Bert’s eyes.

And it is nice that a website for a US channel picked 2 road cyclists and 1 track cyclist in their top 25.

by Katiek on Jan 2, 2009 10:54 AM EST up reply actions

Really? How odd!

It is quite a flattering picture of Bert though. Perhaps that skewed things!

I’m ready for some cycling already but if they have to fill airtime right now, I’d REALLY prefer swimming over extreme fighting. Ugh.

by Jen See on Jan 1, 2009 8:13 PM EST up reply actions

I've been watching US most of the day, or at least it's been on in the background.

I kept hearing a voice and I was certain I knew it but couldn’t place it. It’s winter sports mind you so I wasn’t in the mindset of cycling. Downhill ski jumping, cross country skiing, speed skating. All of a sudden it hit me. Schlanger. Yep, he’s been doing most of the talking all afternoon.

"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."

by nikki on Jan 1, 2009 9:28 PM EST up reply actions

Everytime I hear Schlanger prounounce a name of someone foreign

I want to punch myself in the head. He has the most American way of saying names, it is so annoying, why would I want to hear an Italian name said with an American accent? I don’t expect him to be perfect but at least try, I always try to attempt to say the names like they would be pronounced in the country the person comes from. Just my 2 cents on Schlanger.

by Phil H. on Jan 1, 2009 9:39 PM EST up reply actions

It could be more because I don't know the names

other than the top ones I’ve seen the past few years in lightly following over winters, I don’t think he’s doing too bad with the names. I’m almost more surprised that he seems really comfortable. I thought he was all about cycling. I didn’t realize he was more like Costa who seems to be in it all.

It’s been a quiet day here and I have to say watching universal sports was a nice alternative. Worked out this morning and have since been chilling out.

"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."

by nikki on Jan 1, 2009 9:45 PM EST up reply actions

Well he annoyed the hell out of me

during the D-Tour coverage and the Worlds. I think he is actually solid at doing play by play that’s why I tried not to insult the work he was doing too much. It’s probably the European in me, we get annoyed easily when European languages are butchered :) Btw, is there anything Costas doesn’t do, he did the hockey game at Wrigley today as well.

by Phil H. on Jan 1, 2009 9:51 PM EST up reply actions

Ha. I watched that too.

And really, was that not just not kinda right with him doing the game? I was offered up tix to that a few weeks ago but declined. As tired as I am today I’m happy I did but that had to be pretty cool to be at.

"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."

by nikki on Jan 1, 2009 9:56 PM EST up reply actions

The game was great on TV

but sitting in freezing cold probably sucked hard if you’re tired. The game was exciting but being a good Av’s fan I am obliged to hate the Red Wings. So damn you blackhawks. When it comes to Costas, at least he didn’t do play-by-play, that would have been weird.

Agreed. I enjoyed watching it from the coziness of my chair wrapped up in a blanket.

And really what was up with the Chicago today? They came out playing well and then the 2nd period happened and things got tied up and then they scored again and again and again. Dang.

"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."

by nikki on Jan 1, 2009 10:13 PM EST up reply actions

The announcers said it was the wind

so the one side of the ring was better to shoot at then the other, although Detroit scored twice on the “bad” side in the third, really I think Chicago just gets tight against them. They have lost all 5 of their games this year, and Chicago is better than that. Btw, yesterday we have a nice conversation about Football and today Hockey, the cycling season really has to get going already.

Ha ha. No kidding. Bring on some cycling.

Although I have been watching Cross. Ctv has had some and I’ve found a few others streaming. So it’s not as bad as it could be. :-) Plus as I attempt (and keep praying I have it set up right) getting used to my trainer I’ve been watching some pretty good cycling dvds.

~One of the RedWings also said the wind played a role but used it more of a reason for not scoring in the first better. I’ve been to several blackhawks games (thank you work) and I have to say in a very general sense, it seems they need a a lead and confidence going into the end or they start looking tired. Very general though as I don’t follow them like I do “some” things. :-)

#1 female - Leryn Franco - Javelin

Can’t say as I’ve ever heard of her but the guys might like to take a look. The Tennis girls got bumped down a bit. And then, maybe a question for CrashDan, who is Ashley Force? Listed as #5, for auto racing. Danica Patrick made the list as #20.

However, although I’m not a guy or anything, I think Ana Ivanovic is far better looking than Maria Sharapova.
