Redlands: Time Trial

The 24th edition of the Redlands Bicycle Classic starts with the traditional SUN time trial Thursday. As Lyne mentioned earlier, this is the first NRC race of the year for the men.

I figured I would start a thread to post predictions. Anyone seen any start times?

If you missed it Wednesday, the race website had live interviews with riders and directors (men AND women!). Some of them are archived here. More live coverage is planned for each day of the race.

oh my that tt
we pre-rode the tt. it's horrendous. awful, heinous, you name it, it's that.

so it starts up a quick little hill then you get rollin quick. that only lasts a minute or so then you make a right turn to a mandatory little ring hill (at least for mortals). you come over the top of that, down a fast descent to a tight lefty, and then it's on to a long climb.

the thing with this climb is that it doesn't count as a climb. everyone calls it a false flat. yeah, it's a false flat only compared to what's in store for the last mile.

a 23 is not a happy gear for this final mile.

you cross over the highway and you can see the finish a mile away along the interstate, but well above it. the road tilts up at some wicked awkward angle and it's a hard, mean slog from there...until you make another left turn and it gets even steeper for another couple hundred meters.

after that final rise, you've got another minute or so, that's not nearly as bad, but it's going to be a ball buster.

i mean, every tt is hard, but this one is set up to where if you go a fraction too hard over the first 2 miles, you're going to fall to pieces on the hard part and lose a couple of days. ha.

joy.

Good god!
What's the fun in time trials if you can't set up at something in the 30mph range? Good luck w/ that.

Very cool that they have live video. Respect.

by Chris... on Apr 2, 2008 11:26 PM EDT   0 recs

Ah, but where's the live video?
Nothing on the web site yet and the TT supposedly started 20 minutes ago....

Damn, my one day off in forever, the wife is running errands, and I even sneak away from the honey-do list to watch a good race, but nada.

Uh, except for the TT in the 3 Days of De Panne....

What Time Zone Are You In?
It's 11:45 here on the East Coast - meaning it's only 8:45 in Redlands. According to the official site, the TT starts with the handcycles at 9:30 local time.

Damnit
I forgot how to count. All of those years of schoolin' for nothin'.

I guess I should tune in around 1410....

But the live video is showing an empty TT start house.

by Cyclingrush on Apr 3, 2008 12:07 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

yep
I think the first start isn't for another 45 minutes. I know I go off at 1:00pm Pacific...

Its about 3PM EST
The feed has been up. The announcer on the live site said about 10 minutes to the mens pro TT

by roadside on Apr 3, 2008 3:04 PM EDT   0 recs

Mara Abbot
...apparently on the womens TT. High Road's having a pretty good week, eh?

by Christopher on Apr 3, 2008 3:11 PM EDT   0 recs

What color are Time's jerseys?
Trying to see if I can catch Jered.

Unless Chris has an agreement that he can wear his VS Yellow Jersey in NRC races...

Jered
Made his start time. This is more than can be said for Zirbel. He rolled in a little late.

by australopithecine on Apr 3, 2008 4:02 PM EDT   0 recs

So Zirbel
has a little Delgado in him eh? Whoops.

Hopefully
he doesn't have what Delgado had in him! Discs, and 1 VHS, are coming back to you soon. They were great.

Good for Rory!
Okay... did anyone else drop him a note with his challenge/diary at TOC? It was fun - and he did write back which was cute. He's another good guys who's pretty humble about how many fans he has.

Jered
h/t Nikki, again:

by Chris... on Apr 3, 2008 5:24 PM EDT   0 recs

ha!
I was grinning like an idiot at the start. They called out my name and read out a few of my results and I just couldn't help giggling as I rolled out.

It was pretty awesome.

There were people along the course and they cheered for me. That was sweet.

Ben Jacques-Maynes started 30 seconds behind me...yeah...that was funny.

I turned around to him before the start and introduced myself and said, hi, my name's Jered, I interviewed you on PEZ a little while back. It was funny.

He caught me of course, but I held out for a good while. It took him 6 minutes to catch me. I think I stayed within a minute of him in the end and I'm very pleased with that...I had absolutely nothing aero on...he was FULL on TTd out, and so was everybody that was fast, so I think it made for a worthwhile gain to be in full on TT mode.

Again, I've been doing these TTs just trying to compete against my powermeter, and everytime I do one, I destroy a previous personal best, so it's getting better...slowly. Someday I might even try a TT bike and such...oooooh!

by jered on Apr 3, 2008 6:16 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Aero...
sounds like the course presented a dilemma as to whether to stick on some aero bars and a disc wheel? Were others non-aero?

by Chris... on Apr 3, 2008 6:59 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Still waiting for full results
quick recap Women 1. Mara Abbott, High Road 2. Kat Carroll, Aaron's 3. Kim Anderson, High Road Men 1. Rory Sutherland 2. Ben Day 3. Dom Rollin Now time for a burrito, then report :)

by lyne on Apr 3, 2008 6:47 PM EDT   0 recs

And there was I
expecting to see him wearing the PC leader's jersey.

by Monty. on Apr 3, 2008 7:48 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Maybe
I can send him a yellow garter or something.

by Chris... on Apr 3, 2008 7:53 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Don't compromise
It's the full kit or nothing at all. Dressing a teddy bear in a miniature version and strapping him to the bars doesn't count either.

by Monty. on Apr 3, 2008 8:21 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

skin suit?
Can you send him a skin suit so while he's up in an awesome breakaway he could open his jersey up show it off?  How funny!?!

hey that's me!
i'm glad i smiled for you! i had this moment in the starting house that was absolutely surreal and made me literally laugh out loud.

as the announcer read off my measly list of accomplishments, i realized that there were people WATCHING me, and that i was at a huge race, and i thought how ridiculous that this all was. there were people taking pictures of me. me. how funny is that?

i almost made the top half today! that woulda been cool. i almost almost almost beat my teammate tom soladay, that's all i really cared about. he got me by one lousy second. he had aero bars though.

by jered on Apr 3, 2008 11:23 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Dude
You were looking large and in charge for that picture - having no trouble picture the wattage meter pegged at 420 ;-)

Good luck the rest of the race and check in when you can. Oh, nice work as well on your Flanders review at Pez.

Cam Evans of Symmetrics
Anyone know what happened to him today?  finished dead last at 9+ minutes down... :-(

by guidemd on Apr 4, 2008 12:31 AM EDT   0 recs

no one knows
he missed his tt start...rolled in late, rolled out smooth as can be...was wearing a warm hat...and just soft pedaled it.
