Gossip dello Giorno

Gossip della Gavia

First, a happy event: The House of Petacchi welcomed Alessandro Jr. yesterday. Mom and Baby Ale are doing great. Big Ale didn't really want to ride the Giro, did he?

Also, today's Rosa, Pellizotti dedicated his jersey to his wife, who is expecting their second child in October. They're hoping for a girl, they will name Giorgia. Gazzetta, getting all the important news, eh?

Sadly, the post-race show did not have much to offer us in the gossip or polemica department. This, my friends, must change.

But fear not, for Gav has uncovered a few hints of scandal for you:

Igor Astarloa did not take the start for stage 2. He was suffering fever and stomach problems. Apparently, he became overly cold while awaiting a surprise doping control after the stage. Dangerous business those doping controls.

Rumors are a-swirling that NGC Medical, you know, that team that was supposed to ride the Giro, but didn't, has asked for an investigation from the Italian criminal authorities into the possibility that the RCS accepted bribes from Astana to enter the Giro. They are apparently also considering civil action, but are awaiting the outcome of the authority's investigations. This puts paid to the notion that NGC may have been on the money train that brought Astana to the race. Me? I doubt much will come of it. But it's a nice salacious little tidbit for a Sunday afternoon, no?

On to Signor Diluca and his not-so-pristine past. Eugene Copadacqua is known for his anti-doping exposes over at sportpro.it. It's fair to say that few, if any, doping stories escape his notice or his pen. Copa published the transcripts of the conversations between Diluca, Mazzoleni and Santuccione, a decision Diluca has decided not to forgive. At the press conference prior to the Giro start, Diluca announced that he would not answer any questions from Copa during the Giro. Ooooh, diss. Copa? He picked up his toys and left. A few others joined him, just to show what they thought of Diluca's posing.

We successfully added another bloke to our ‘Team Dean’ on the 26th April. Val Owen Dean blasted his way into this crazy world weighing in at 3.98kg and 2 wks early. Obviously he figured if he wanted to meet his Dad on his arrival, it was best he turned up unannounced before Julz headed off to the Giro.

Gavia, I had not seen

anywhere in the press how Zonagan got NGC to drop out. Did he just tell them don’t show up?

That's what it sounds like, yes

As far as I’ve seen, Zom just told them, no Giro for you. He made some handwaving sorts of gestures – he is Italian after all – to the effect that all invites were conditional and that he reserved the right to change his mind. Fickle, fickle, that Zomegnan.

I had thought maybe NGC got a little love from the euro bag, but if they’re throwing legal documents around – does one throw such things? I need a little help with this – it does not sound like they received any compensation. l’ouch.

ASO probably doesn't like NGC

If NGC can throw around legal documents and challenge a race organizers right to bring in whoever they want, I think ASO would actually be against NGC in this case. These guys have been living on the “we have the right to invite or disinvite anyone we want at any time” schtick. I happen to agree with them. I’m not sure there is a cycling rule or contract between the teams and RCS that forbade a team from offering money to ride anyway. I am guessing that if a team came to RCS or the Vuelta organizers and said – hey here is a couple million Euros if we are in, and we’ll have the strongest team, that wouldn’t disqualify them. It would be interesting to look at the contract between RCS and the teams and ASO and the teams.

NGC at the Tour?

Aye Carumba. That would be a total disaster. Those kids were barely qualified for the Giro.

I think Jean Delatour back in the day tried to sue the ASO over a Tour invite. I’m not sure it worked out so well. That was somewhat different, though, as they were never offered an invite. In this case, NGC received the invite, then it was revoked. They are considering suing for damages in civil court, as they spent cash to prepare the team – cars, mechs, staff, that sort of thing – to ride the Giro. Since they’re a small team, that was a pretty big undertaking. As far as I understand it, they don’t have anything to do with the criminal investigation of Astana and their alleged effort to bribe their way in, which given the way the Italian courts seem to work, probably won’t go anywhere fast.

at some point

I’m going to have to get serious about my search for copies of contracts in the pro cycling world. I’m sure they’re out there, and I’m just as sure that they’d yield a delicious crop of information.

NGC Medical is now a sponsor of Lampre, just in time for the Giro....

I assumed that this was the ‘payoff’ for being kicked out of the Giro, but if they are now suing, well it makes no sense.

This

has the ring of a recurring column, eh?

by Chris Fontecchio on May 11, 2008 11:47 PM EDT reply actions

lol, is that a hint?

But yes, it could probably happen again. Just not before 10.00 am.

Translation

Gavia drinks at 10:01am.

Would it be too forward of me to note that you’re apparently my kind of girl?

Ha!

Actually, it’s just that I’m so totally not a morning person that I can’t put one word in front of the other without tripping all over myself. Not that I can really do that after 10.00 am either.

Gossip requires an espresso or several. Then, maybe a glass or several of red wine. Then, only then, can we get the gossip going on.

It’s all about the timing :-)

mmm, yesss.

Ale and Milram haven’t been on such good terms for quite some time.

One problem: I believe the Vuelta begins before his suspension is up. Or, did I add wrong? Someone help a girl out here, adding, subtracting, so not my thing.

by Jen See on May 12, 2008 12:06 AM EDT up reply actions

no Vuelta

31 of august is the last day for him.

The Vuelta begins at 30.

grazie!

I thought that was true, but I worry when it comes to adding and subtracting.

One day...mmm

wonder if any negotiations are in progress…

by lyne on May 12, 2008 1:07 AM EDT up reply actions

yessss...

you do have to wonder. after all the chatter about ending basso’s sanction early, you have to wonder if there will be an attempt to end ale’s a day early, so he can ride. since this thing has already gone to TAS once, i’m not sure they will have much success. if i’m remembering right, CONI originally sought a 2 year sanction, so the one year TAS handed down is already a compromise deal.
