Giro d'Italia Stage 5... LIVE!

Giro d'Italia Stage 5... LIVE!

Scroll down for something resembling a preview. This should be a terrific finish and a fight for the maglia rosa between holder Franco Pellizotti and his former captain Danilo DiLuca. There will be plenty of earlier slopes for LPR (or others) to play havoc with the race. As early stages with minimal time gaps available go, this one should be primo entertainment. Enjoy!

Nuyens

fractured his right clavicle after that serious crash yesterday.

Some race notes from VN:

02:14 PM: Despite the bumps and bruises . . .
. . . the bunch has been active today. The average speed for the first hour of racing was 44.6 km/h, and there has been a series of breakaway attempts. Big Maggy Backstedt had a go early on, but was pulled back; so, too, were Luis Laverde (CSF Group), Johannes Frohlinger (Gerolsteiner) and Theo Eltink (Rabobank).

02:17 PM: If at first you don’t succeed . . .
. . . but Laverde and Frohlinger had another go, and this time they got away, with David Millar (Slipstream) and Pavel Brutt (Tinkoff). Francisco Perez-Sanchez (Caisse d’Epargne) bridged to make it a five-some and we were off to the races.

Laverde

In the last two editions he won a stage in each. And was on the breakaway. I think last year it happens in stage 5 or 6, when Pinotti wins the maglia rosa.

One more from VeloNews -

02:49 PM: Less than 100km to go . . .
. . . and our escapees – Luis Laverde (CSF Group), Johannes Frohlinger (Gerolsteiner), David Millar (Slipstream), Pavel Brutt (Tinkoff) and Francisco Perez-Sanchez (Caisse d’Epargne) – have a nine-minute advantage.

Is there a jersey in the Giro for most Kilometres spent in breakaways? I think he’s ridden more in breaks than in the bunch this season…

He's sick of hearing

the rest of the peloton yelling “Get a haircut!” at him so he’s better off riding alone.

He's on my team

so I’m hoping they stay away and he gets second to Millar (sentimental pick).

CN - Levi

16:00 CEST
Astana has the luxurious problem of which of its three stars will be the captain. German Andreas Klöden was the nominal captain going it, but don’t count out Levi Leipheimer. The American has gotten off to a quiet start, but is only 40 seconds back in the 23rd spot. It’s too early for him yet, he told Cyclingnews. “I definitely need some time to…well, I am a rider who usually does well in the third week, when everybody else gets tired.”

... I can recall, and I’m not joking about htis, being about seven or eight years of age, trying to learn to keep my balance without training wheels, and tossing that goddamn thing right across the garage.

After five hours in the saddle, and you rise up from your saddle to give it the finishing kick and your machine fails you, well, there’s been a couple times I would have thrown my motorcycle given the opportunity. This was frustration, unprofessional is throwing the bike AT someone.

Not tossing the bike but

once I was riding off road with a buddy and crashed on a really rocky section, sending my friend off in gales of laughter. Being super pissed but not wanting to damage the bike (or walk home) I picked up a big rock and threw it at the rock that brought me down…. which subsequently broke and ricocheted back into my shin – further crippling and infuriating me and causing my friend to almost cough up his diaphragm in laughter.

If that had been captured on video I would probably watch it once a day even though I looked like a complete jackass. It was pretty funny in retrospect.

Just like in the movie – Breaking Away!!!
Haha.
I think that would have been so much cooler then to toss a 10K bike, which in the process destroyed a lot of parts, so his mechanic will now get to build him a completely new bike on top of his normal daily duties.
Just my opinion, and I do respect your opinion, I just disagree with it all the same.

Which is why I love this site

We mostly all agree to disagree and I don’t think any of us (less maybe ctv) is nailed for any opinions given. I’m okay with that bike toss as I felt that frustration for him. I’m not sure what my thought would’ve been to have have seen him stop and just wait to see all pass him by. It was heated moment and he really wanted a stage win here and had form to get one. Mechanicals just suck. But I agree with the points on more damage to the bike and more work for the mechanics. Glad its over and still feeling for him as gosh darn it, that just really did suck.

It hurts to see a bike like that thrown. That’s a lot of cash right there, and a huge amount of effort for someone who stayed up most of the night working on it. At first, I understood his frustration. But I’m onboard with Ryan, it’s soooooo unprofessional. I did not realize he was still that far out.
So yes, the peloton would have passed him.

Think F1 racing, or Motorcycle GP, or even NASCAR; heck even Motorcross!

Would any of those guys consciously destroy their vehicle just because of a mechanical?
No way.
They might be super pissed, and do all sorts of things, but they never trash their ride.

That said, proper form is like a golf swing.
He needs to lock out the left arm and push through with his hips if he wants to really optimize his toss.

Bike care

I think he showed the maturity that age provides. While Ricco tossed his bike across the line, he threw it on the road. Millar has the sense to throw his bike over the barriers onto the grass thus minimizing the scratches to the paint job.

Lots of people don’t, whereas people who have problems seem to have them just about every time they view a race. There must be some kind of optimal computer configuration - and a few less-than-optimal computer configurations - that’re causing it? It’s certainly something we’ll (at the risk of incurring Sui Juris’s wrath…) look into.

I'd rather keep it public

you can cut and paste it to the right people.

Your feed freezes at times that we can reasonably expect people to be loggin in, in large numbers, and trying different feeds to see what the best feed is that works for them. Once it hangs, we’re left “tugging” the little tracker button back and forth past the point where it hangs, to try to get both picture, sound, and an ungoing feed. I suspect you have someone who’s calculating the bandwidth and load relative to the number of subscribers or the number of people signing in, without compensating for the repeated “clicks” to try to load 1200 kbps, 800, 400, etc.

It is arguably possible that there could be a bottleneck “downstream” from your servers, in the internet. If that has to do with the feed into your building, pony up for a fatter “pipe.” It could, remotely possibly, be constriction at an internet node that you feed through. In that case, maybe you need to send to a couple of mirror sites elsewhere in the world, and handle your traffic from those.

However, in minor races, the problem is even worse, making me think that it is YOUR assignment of bandwidth right inside CTV. Someone is making bad choices based on either economics or a misunderstanding of how actual users use the site. Possibly, the site keeps space reserved after each attempt at a particular streaming speed, and chokes itself up until someone complains, and someone else goes in and hits a reset. Presumably, when we complain to Rebecca about breakup or freezing, and then she says “is it better now?” 3 minutes later, and it IS better, she has asked the right person to do their job better.

In case this is too long, I will ALSO e-mail it to you.

by JFS_PGH on May 14, 2008 11:22 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Tell you what

I will gladly provide you with whatever feedback you would like. What do you guys want to know? Start a Fan Post and give us a list… browser version, media player, OS, type of ISP… I will even invite you over to my house to see for yourself if that will help. I’ll provide the beer…. and while people around the Podium Cafe are very cool to each other, I guarantee you that as soon as we start charging each other for a service, and then fail to provide that service, the gloves will come off… So thanks for trying (sincerely) and please don’t give up, but we will probably all continue to tell you that your service sucks until it no longer sucks. Don’t take it personally. Just fix it. Then we will all get together and buy you a pony. And give you a foot massage. Actually, we will only give Rebecca a foot massage. And maybe Brian and Anthony…

Context

The unfortunate part (I’m guessing for you as a person in this conversation) is that company you’re representing here has ZERO credibility in the eyes of many many users. I don’t know how many times we’ve been promised that a problem was fixed, or that “gosh, no one else is having that issue” has been tossed out, etc. Yet the very same problems replay themselves, time after time after time. So, either the customers are experiencing a collective break with reality, or CTV has established itself as being utterly incapable of holding up its end of the subscription bargain. So that’s the context in which anything from any CTV rep is going to be taken, I think.

by Sui Juris on May 14, 2008 11:18 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

to be fair

some problems have improved with a combination of
a) ideal OS and browser and flip-4-mac
b) bookmarking two or three versions of the login page directly

Things that have improved:
not kicking me out during login much anymore
The race itself and the option buttons almost always load (in the past, I got a lot of blank or black race viewers with no control buttons).
Fewer total site crashes

Now it’s mostly psychedelic breakup, and pauses / endless loops, with occasional total freezes of the viewer, which act as a “hold” on the picture AND incapacitate the slider button. That requires a reload of the page. It wouldn’t be so dire, except it increases in severity over the course of the race, and it almost always happens somewhere during the last 10K. That’s what still sucks for everyone, no matter how they have worked to align themselves with CTV’s process and preferences.

by JFS_PGH on May 14, 2008 11:29 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

somewhat similar, here

Once the login occurs (not a given on the first, second, or third try), I’m generally in. This was not the case at the beginning of the season, but seems to have become more reliable of late. And yes, complete site crashes aren’t common.

However, the video I’m clicking doesn’t always show up, and when it does, it results in the situation you describe in your last paragraph (tho’ I’ve rarely been able to manipulate the slider). These problems are common to all browsers and platforms I’ve tried (Mac/Win x IE/Firefox/Safari). The feed manageability is somewhat better if you just run it through VLC, but that does nothing for the progressive worsening of the quality as the race progresses.

I am willing to bet that this is a network problem. It is not a end-user config problem. If a CTV engineer can come on here and demonstrate that it is my computer settings that cause this, I will apologize and STFU. Otherwise, CTV needs to get on it and get this fixed. The longer it lets this go, the more damage it’s doing to its own future.

by Sui Juris on May 14, 2008 11:45 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I was only speculating because I know certain configurations improve performance of the site.

Having read the replies, it seems like there’s certainly a very good case for it being network problems, so I’m not exactly going to argue with the people who’re having the problem and seem to understand where it’s coming from. You’re probably right. I’m happy to apologise.

It’s being investigated right now.

by CTV-ROLD on May 14, 2008 11:55 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Thanks

I’ve gathered that CTV’s name is mud on here, and I’d say rightly so if so many people have encountered these problems time and time again. I guess I was just trying to discuss the problem and work out where to go from there—it’d probably beat another apology that doesn’t get anything done.

I’ve just sent an email out to the whole company about the loss of the feed today, which has riled some feathers, so you can believe me when I say that we really are looking it.

Reading my message back, I can see why it’d get the reaction it did, especially in the broader context. But… uhhh… I think we should have Rebecca watching over Podium Cafe again from now on, yes?

by CTV-ROLD on May 14, 2008 11:30 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I hope you realize that the reason you get so many complaints

is the fact that the service you are supposed to provide is what we are all dreaming of. All the greater the disappointment when you continually fail at what seems to be very basic functions(and seemingly not making improvements, even after years of failing).

To put in in perspective for US and THEM

similarly, I figure every time we put up screen snap with a “this is great, if you had CTV you’d be seeing this,” we’re doing free adverts for you. At the same time, given the current CTV attitude, each time we do it, I have to wonder, is some lame-brain in your legal department going to try to sue our asses off? We’re not feeling the love anymore.

by JFS_PGH on May 14, 2008 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

perspective:

When CTV started, people were about ready to wet themselves to have a streaming cycling feed, and people were feeling the love for the premium channel.

http://www.podiumcafe.com/2006/4/16/82738/2495

Since then, we have worked on, and worked out, a lot of problems with CTV’s help, and jumped through a lot of hoops. You can follow the course of improvements, and frustrations…and a LOT of hoop-jumping on our part.

2006: http://www.podiumcafe.com/2006/10/2/201357/076
2007: http://www.podiumcafe.com/2007/3/3/25956/65669
2007: http://www.podiumcafe.com/2007/6/14/9381/19416
2008: http://www.podiumcafe.com/2008/3/1/13719/07743

Where has the love gone? Well, for one thing, CTV has taken to strong-arming the silly little 1-inch feeds (silent or in estonian or urdu or I don’t know what). When you can’t provide reliable coverage beginning to end, you shouldn’t act like Microsoft. Unless and until you are darn-near infallible for all your subscribers, you ought to be putting links for those guys on your site as a backup option, not killing them dead outside of their home markets. You need to be a team player, not an arm-waver who cuts off the little guys just to watch them tumble.

Ricco vs Millar

Well in this exciting contest, Millar is the old crafty veteran, with his most notable early bike throwing beingf last year in the Tour on the last TT. Excellent toss by David that day. And this day was artful with the toss over the barriers. And has he even finished yet?

But you have to hand it to the excellent extincts of the Cobra who at least throws his bike over the finish line. Multi-tasking by Ricco- throwing AND finishing.

Millar has better technique, Ricco is more of a power-thrower

Today David used the very effective Riis-rotation to get optimal distance, it’s a thing of beauty to watch if it is performed correctly.

Not longest...

But one of the steepest. Simoni said last year that the Zoncolon from the direction they climbed it last year might be steeper, likewise for Plan de Corones. But Angliru is definitely close to the steepest and very, very, very difficult.

Longest is probably something like the Tourmalet or the Galibier.

And the exposure? Priceless.

We were chatting about this yesterday, and the idea of teams “giving away” the jersey for tactical reasons. About the only team I’ve ever seen do this is Lance/Bruyneel. Most teams defend until they have no choice but to give it up – ie, time bonuses on a stage win, a time trial, whatever. The effort to defend is small relative to the return of the daily exposure, whatever the team’s long term goals.

That's good to hear!

The stage was ridiculously long

millar

interviewed in French. di Stefano, says dommage, dommage. Millar said he was so angry – rage – he was ready for the sprint, hoping to win the stage. He wants to win a stage at this Giro, he’ll try again.

Popping in from work ---

So, who won the stage? Was it The Brute?

Dang, I knew I got that wrong

And it’s so obvious too. Naturally you could never teach a fish to use lasers, what was I thinking?

gavia, what

was the talk about Contador?

by Bruce Suomi on May 14, 2008 12:11 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

missed it, sorry

I heard it from the other room, and I’m not sure what was said. I think it was in the context of the GC faves.

Maybe Monty got it, I think he’s watching Italian feed…

thanks,

no probs.
it was DiLuca and the studio talking about him (and LL&Klödi, so surely something about the GC I’d guess). If someone heard it AND understood it would be great to hear…
Even though I don’t understand a word what they are saying, I really like the before and after studios!
Don’t know how the riders feel about it but for the public it’s great.
Just need to learn the language, then it would be perfect….
Thanks for the translations gavia, much appreciated!!!

Sorry

I’ve been out today and left my PC recording the day’s coverage. I got the morning show, complete with Ilenia Lazzaro riding the stage on a video trainer, a couple of hours of some completely incomprehensible Italian form of billiards played without cues on a table with no pockets, the early part of the live coverage, then with about 30k to go the hard drive filled up and it stopped.

ouch

That does not rock. At least the bike toss has been reposted ;-)

I say it all the time ...

If there is a better post-race read than right-cheer on the PdC, I ain’t seen it. Asshats to fish w/ lasers to bike-toss to Italian mafia. I get to read about the race while laughing my ass off.

So thanks everyone!

Must... resist...

posting…. youtube video of Orca attacking a shark…

Nope. Here it is.
I dunno, somehow I take a little too much hometown pride in an Orca offing a shark.
