Giro d'Italia Stage 8... Live!!

Giro d'Italia Stage 8... LIVE!!

Interesting stage today, as far as guessing the outcome. It's largely a downhill run, after some early ciimbs, dropping into a long valley gallop. But the last 4km have some sort of incline to them. CN says it's gradual... then predicts Ricco or Bettini to win. Only half of that sentence can be right. I'd say watch out for Bennati, if the ramps don't get too severe. Otherwise, the usual Classics suspects. Maybe J-Rod can reel off one last win, before the hills turn to flats, then to mountains. Enjoy!

Good morning, all.

This is the first chance I’ve had to watch a live Giro stage this year, so I’m pleased to be here. The coffee is brewing.

Bruce, yikes, that’s hard to hear this early in the morning. Moribito separated his shoulder a few days ago, and now…ouch.

Oh, that might be the opening of the new Oslo operahouse (?)

Decorated with beautiful italian marble. Unfortunately no one mentioned to the norwegians that if you put that up in the Oslo climate it will turn a wonderful colour of urine. So now they will have an operahouse that looks like someone had a big pee-party all over it.

Not to offend half the audience here but

the podium girls at the Giro are way better than the Tour – the girls at the Giro actually look like athletes that could hop on a bike and knock out 50K no worries. The girls at the Tour look like they’re more concerned about their hair and whether they have enough smokes to curtail their appetites. In other words – not role models.

(I feel like this is ok territory to broach since most of the time the camera’s focus on 180 male rumps. Carry on.)

Morning

RAI have come ready prepared for a dull stage, and have a huge panel of talking heads.

And a few notes from today’s morning show:

The Italians all think that wherever Bert was last week, it wasn’t on the beach. As Piepoli put it “If I had been on the beach I would have lost 10 minutes yesterday.”

Bennati is looking forward more to tomorrow, the only stage ending in Tuscany.

Bettini reckons that he did a good job yesterday helping Visconti “You have to respect the jersey” The Italians don’t just give it up.

Visconti’s father is looking to be more embarrassing than Tommeke’s mum. Apparently he had a dream last night that his son would carry Bettini to a stage win today as thanks for yesterday.

And Alessandra just can’t get an interview with Levi; her arrives, signs in, and leaves for the depart.

I’m not so sure that was a planned attack by Di Luca as much as it might have been a desperate lunge to get to the front and not lose precious time. I can’t believe that he was intentionally so far back with less than 2km to go. Did anyone see him puncture?

"Sono rimasto un po’ troppo indietro nella discesa che portava ai piedi di Tivoli, ma ho preferito non rischiare e d’altra parte non si può correre tutto il Giro in prima fila. Sull’ultima salita, tre compagni mi hanno aiutato a recuperare terreno, poi quando siamo tornati sui primi ho provato a sorprenderli in volata. Forse, se avessi aspettato ancora qualche metro, avrei ottenuto risultati migliori, ma credo che vada bene così…".

He says his team was perfect, that he wanted to ride for the stage and to keep the escape under control. I wanted to win and came close but today Ricco is strong, furbo… crafty, and bravo. Tomorrow, we arrive in Toscana – that’s Bettini’s home region, so he’ll perhaps want to show something.

I missed the interview with Klodie, but apparently there was one.

He says that he’s riding good, that yesterday the climb was too short and fast for him, but that’s okay because the climbs that will decide the giro are long and hard. He is looking forward to the time trial at urbino which will stabilize things. He doesn’t think much of Ricco’s chances.

A frozen 'cross ride from this last weekend. As you may be aware we have had siberian conditions here in the UK with a low of -14 degrees centigrade here on saturday morning. It was a beautiful sunny morning so i layered up and set off for a snowy 'cross ride along a roman road. I checked the thermometer when i got back to find it had been -10 throughout the ride! I had a lot of fun though and the views were spectacular.
