Time Trial Post-Race Babble

Here's a second thready for the post-race shenanigans, including some brief interviews with the main protagonisti and the revised GC.

In the main, the post-race show was taken up with a lengthy interview with Petacchi. Indeed, his appearance essentially was the post-race show today. Rough summary/translation of his remarks to the assembled press is here.

Always use

the Piepoli-ometer to determine how climby a ITT was. At only 2min43 down over 40km that’s a very climber friendly course.

by Rothko on May 20, 2008 11:33 AM EDT reply actions

agreed!

though simoni’s gap viz. diluca and ricco – as well as peeps – suggests that he was on an especially good day, even for that course. i suspect he knew that he could go well on it if he really killed it, so he spend some extra effort prep-ing it. the ds said he had prepared especially for this stage – using prepared in the non-nefarious sense, I mean.

it's mixed as far as i can tell

they’re in favor of controls, but they view the system as unfair and unequitable. that, basso doesn’t ride, valverde does, now peeps rides, and ale doesn’t. it seems from their view that the italian riders are getting the penalties more while others who do the same are not punished. they want to see more fairness and more clarity.

(FWIW, having seen numerous patients who figure that if one puff of salbutamol doesn’t work well enough then 5 must be better and forget to use their corticosteroid inhaler because it doesn’t have an immediate effect, and with the numerous complaints I’ve heard of shakiness and palpitations etc from too much salbutamol, I have doubts that it really has any performance-enhancing effect in an acute situation and suspect Petacchi was just careless with his medication usage rather than doping. But, I figure if you have a TUE you should be incredibly careful to use the medication properly so as not to get yourself in trouble…)

I ask the question again...

... what do you do… on one of the upcoming leg breakers… when the grupetto is 15 minutes behind you and a select group is off the front of the pack: Contador, Klöden, Di Luci, Gilberto, Ricco… and you just get hit time after time after time in the face by one Astana attack after another. They haven’t won yet, but they’ve positioned themselves perfectly… absolutely perfectly.

I think Bruyneel’s cocktail of contempt and baby’s tears is working…

True

but wouldn’t you say that LPR is in a similar situation. Different caliber, but similar situation none the less.

by Hons on May 20, 2008 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I keep thinking about...

~:> vs. Contador last year. No one could keep up with those two other than Soler, who’s pretty much out of the picture after today I think unless he’s given an unholy breakaway victory. If it comes down to an LPR attack up a hill, I can’t imagine that Contador, if he really has any of the form of the TdF, doesn’t nail it right back or just swarm around whoever it is and ride away.

What I HOPE… is for someone to go, and get marked by an Astana and then see the two of them duke it out to a summit finish with big GC names cracking left and right and the insane tifosi lining the narrow road within a hairsbreath of the riders who have their teeth bared and are just annihilating each other.

And I want it… oh dear god I want it to be Ricco vs. Contador. That would be the hands-down most bad-ass moment of racing all year.

That would be, dare I say, Über bad-ass. That would be awesome to see and if it does, Bert already has the psycological edge. Ricco seems to be a fragile sort, so I’m sure he is already shaken to the core.

Hmmm...

... I don’t see the same sort of one sided vitriol between Piepoli or Simoni and the Accountant as i do between Ricco and… well, everyone else.

So…

Good: Someone, anyone, justifying having their name painted by tifosi on some wicked howling climb.

Better: True, unabashed GC candidates (Klöden + Simoni or Di Luca + Menchov + Soler) sticking knives into each other with snow covered peaks on one side and a death spiral cliff on the other to a mountain top finish… seeing all but one crack completely and seeing the other finish a la Gerdesmann at the summit.

Best: Seeing Contador win after pulling over, kawkpunching Ricco and throwing his bike off said cliff.

Ricco has a big mouth, but does to a certain extent back it up. I will never forgive him those sunglasses though.

GC faves

Contador
Bruseghin @0.53
Klodie 0.55
Nibali 1.03
Savol 1.08
Ricco 1.31
Diluca 1.32
Menchov 1.58
Simoni 2.11

Pellizotti 2.16

Of the Italians, I like Gibo’s chances. But it’ll be hard going to bring back 2.00 in change on Contador. Neither Ricco nor Nibali are out of it, just yet. But I can’t say I rate Diluca’s chances too highly after today. I expected a better ride out of him on this one. Bruseghin looks great for a top ten finish. Wildcards to Menchov and Savoldelli. That was a damn good ride from Savol given that he had a mech problem.

Menchov. He has a habit of sucking arse early in the GTs and then getting stronger as he goes. To me the thing about Menchov is his age! He’s only like 26 or 27. So, realisically, he hasn’t even reached his peak yet. He will for sure have a bad day in the mountains but will probably limit losses and get stronger while the guys like Ricco and DiLuca who have been strong thus far will start to lose some form and fall by the wayside. Pretty predictable

I think that we could all pretty much see that with the exception of Bruseghin, the TT results were pretty predictable. Contador and Kloeden putting the smack down on the other “contenders” and thus setting up an Astana dominance. I will say that it would be fantastic if Gibo can do something. I think that Ricco and DiLuca were fooling themselves to think that they were going to win this Giro. Maybe all the other teams knew what was going to happen when Astana got the invite. I don’t know but I hope the rest of Giro is exciting and not just brute force by Astana controlling the race ala Disco. That would be too boring, but probably inevitable. One thing we know is that Kloedi and Bert have a world-class domestique at their service in Levi. Who knows, maybe he might do what he did at Le Tour last year and smoke the last time trial. A bit more transcription

Bartoletti (RAI) – A couple of years ago Italian cycling had 4 important pillars: Basso. Di Luca, Petacchi, Bettini. Three of those have been cut to the ground, luckily Di Luca is still here. What do you think of that?

Petacchi – It makes me think that cycling has changed a lot. Unfortunately there have been problems in recent years, and many are paying for it. I think that in this case I am paying for a judicial mistake, an sporting injustice, but I can’t find the solution in a minute. Therefore, let’s see, let’s see for the moment how my case unfolds. I still need to decide some things, so let’s see.

Luca Giovanella (Gazzetta) – I want to know from Alessandro – How has he spent these days, after this sentence, the birth of his child, a host of different situations (?), at the personal level, the level of the soul, how has life been these last few weeks?

Petacchi – Fortunately I have the baby. I can take care of him. Otherwise you can imagine at this time, how life has been up until 6th May. Since last year I have had two, two official hearings, you could say, and at the end they found me guilty. So it’s clear, that until this sentence was handed down, I was never relaxed (tranquillo!). I repeat, on the 6th of May what happened happened, On the 10th of May my baby was born. In summary I try to not think about it.

Beppe Conti (TuttoSport) – How many times in this period have you genuinely thought of giving up riding?

Petacchi – Never

Eugene Capodacqua (Repubblica) – You spoke of a cycling that has changed. You ? [impassata di serioruota] of a somewhat notorious doctor even if you ?? more times of the victories gained etc. Don’t you think that a cycling that is changing ought to also change [la tegiamente] to confront certain doctors?

Petacchi – Me, I visited a preparatore athletico, and was happy to do so. As I already answered.

Ernando Ruffo (?)(Corriere della Sport) – Petacchi and Piepoli were involved with Salbutamol How come there is a charge for Petacchi and none for Piepoli? Can you explain the difference?

Petacchi – You explain it to me. And I said to them, to WADA. I have absolutely nothing against Piepoli. He’s asthmatic like me, in a different way, he has allergy induced Asthma, I have stress induced Asthma, so they are two things a bit different (ben diverso) , we both have a certificate which sets down a limit. We both exceeded this limit and were treated in different ways. It’s clear to me that the treatment (giustizia) he had was not the same as mine. So you’ve all read the judgement, there’s no reason for me to read that to you. It is noted several times that I didn’t do anything to improve my performance. I didn’t cheat (fatto dolo), I didn’t break the rules of the sport in order to get results, I did it to correct a physical deficit, and it has cost me a year. What should I do?

Gigi – Let me recall also, briefly, before passing to Paolo Tommaseli of the Corriere della Sera that Petacchi’s defence lawyer has confirmed that the point 7 …..

At which point I’ve had enough of this fawning.

OK OK

For the volume you write here that seems like a cop out, but so much of that seemed to be “why don’t those horrible men in Geneva believe you. We all know you’re telling the truth.” Apart from the second time round when the mike came back to Capodacqua, then camera shot suddenly switched to people standing outside holding umbrellas and all the microphones stopped working.

Now I don’t want to get obsessed by the doping side of cycling (at times you have to persuade that it is better to win the fight by small battles than to go for one big holocaust and part of that process is finding the time to sit back and enjoy the racing) but this wasn’t the occasion to gloss over the whole subject.

And another, slightly less noble, motive is that it’s harder to gloss over the difficult bits doing it afterwards. Doing it live you can just ignore them and pretend you are editing to pick out the salient points.

Eh?

Not sure what you mean, I was just responding to your disgust with the interview.

yep

looks like an accidental caduta here (see, I can mangle just like Gavia!). Monty, your post-race work here is much appreciated. Please keep it up.

No pretending here. For me, live blogging the interviews is silly hard. The riders don’t enunciate as clearly as cassani and bulba and are more likely to leave out words or mumble. Really, I feel pretty lucky if I can get anything.

It’s fun, though. And nice language practice. Just wish I was a native speaker, then it would be oh-so-easy!

While I’m here, there’s a transcript thingy in Italian. One bit I missed in the live interview, is that they asked him about Cecchini. He said he never went to Ceccho as a doctor, but only as an athletic trainer. He is one of the few – there were something like 5 Italian riders, as of last season – still working with Ceccho. Nibali is certainly not one of them, as he went once to Ceccho during his time at Fassa (standard for anyone who rode there), but didn’t like him, so never went back.

no idea how

you do it. I can follow, in that get-the-main-point-with-a-slight-helping-of-nuance, when it’s French or Spanish. But Italian? I’m lost within the first 10 seconds.

If there's any confusion

I’m really glad both of you are contributing this stuff. These quotes usually don’t show up in the big media in English for another 6-12 hours. And you know everyone here wants to know what they’re saying… at least up until the media starts kissing Petacchi’s butt.
