CSC Invitational Preview

Rahsaan Bahati wins the 2007 CSC Invitational

Sunday will bring us the National Racing Calendar event that has become the unofficial kick-off to Philly Week - the 11th edition of the CSC Invitational. Starting off as the Clarendon Cup in 1998, this race has developed into one of the premiere pro crits in the US. Over the years, this race has attracted impressive squads from T-Mobile, CSC, and Postal/Discovery. It has also served as a showcase for strong domestic talents from the likes of Navigators, Jelly Belly, and Rock Racing. If you're in the area, you'll not regret coming to check it out. Why? Well, take a look at the map (and more!) on the other side of the jump:

Star-divide

That's turn after turn after turn on a circuit that rewards all-out efforts from riders who are able to balance on the edge for 100km. It's a relatively flat course (tho' you may disagree after your 50th pass through the slow long rise that makes up the start/finish straight), but the technical nature is very unforgiving (you'll want to click there). On top of all of that, it's going to be hot - we're looking at a high of 85 degrees (that's 27°C). Local racer Unholy Rouleur recently reminded me of last year's CSC team, a supertalented Euro-based squad that nonetheless suffered disproportionately in similar heat.

Pro Men's Field

There are two ProTour teams in the men's race (100km) this year - CSC and Team High Road. Unfortunately for the fans, CSC didn't bring its heavy guns this year (previous years have included Bobby Julich and JJ Haedo, among others). While Team High Road's George Hincapie won't be making an appearance here this year, but they may be able to shine with Greg Henderson (who had some good days in Georgia, not too long ago). The ProTour teams won't be the fan favorites of this race, though - Slipstream and Rock Racing will be battling for that title. Slipstream's bringing Magnus Backstedt, Tyler Farrar and Martin Maaskrant. Rock Racing is returning 2007 winner Rahsaan Bahati. With Freddy Rodriguez on the roster, too, you have to wonder who's been tapped to win this for Rock Racing, though. And the talent isn't just concentrated in these four teams. Colavita-Sutter Home returns with the Sebastian Haedo-Kyle Wamsley duo (who won the near by U.S. Air Force Cycling Classic last month). Health Net-Maxxis, which has been a factor in this race for as long as I can remember, brings Rory Sutherland, Kirk O'Bee, and Karl Menzies. Toyota-United's Dominque Rollin will be all by himself on the course, as the rest of his team (with perennial favs Dominquez and Stevic) will competing in the Tulsa Tough this weekend. The rest of the men's roster is available below.

Pro Women's Race

The women's race (50km) will be especially interesting, with Team High Road's Ina Teutenberg, Colavita-Sutter Home's Tina Pic, and Cheerwine's Laura Van Gilder facing off against each other. Between the three of them, they've amassed 13 podium places over the history of this race. This includes one win for Pic, two wins for Teutenberg, and three wins for Van Guilder. You have to wonder what the odds are for one of them *not* to win.

I wish I could talk more about the women's field, but as is common with too many races, the women's info seems to be an afterthought and a full roster isn't yet available. Teams will include Aaron's Corporate Furnishings, Cheerwine, Colavita Sutter Home, Team TIBCO, ValueAct Capital Cycling Team, Team Advil-Chapstick, Van Deissel, PCIM, Team Kenda Tire and Team High Road.

Schedule The pro women's race starts at 10:15am. The pro men's race starts at 12:15pm. If you're coming, the Metro will be your best bet - the Clarendon stop is smack in the middle of the course. If you're driving in, the Market Commons parking garage is probably your easiest bet (or you could park at my house and we'll walk over. But you'll have to carry some of my cameras).

Mark are you going to be there?

This should be a pretty exciting week here in the states. I’m hoping you guys here have some good coverage as the big name places often totally disappoint with trying to follow. I so love yours and Lyne’s coverage of the races!

I am, and

thanks for the kind words. I’m playing tri support crew for (occasional) PdC poster Megabeth in the early early AM, so I’ll miss the first half of the Men’s 1/2/3 am race, but I’ll be there for the rest of the day. If any of you are out there, say hi. I’ll on course snapping away, likely in a white tech shirt, khakis, and a big dumb floppy hat to maintain my delicate complexion.

I'll be there too,

Probably wearing my Republic of Anaerobia (red/black) jersey. Cervelo is bringing a bunch of bikes to ride so I’ll be doing that in the morning with friends, but we’ll probably look for a spot by 1130 or so. I’ll keep my eye out for you. —Mike

Very cool! I am so happy

to know we’ll have great coverage to follow along with! I think Demoncat is going to be there. I love my Slippies (Will and Mike for sure) and there’s going to be some great talent there. This year I’ve been following the guys here in the states more (huge thanks to you and Lyne) and this really should be an exciting week! Can’t wait!

Huge good luck to Megabeth!

I found it quite interesting to see that Toyota sent the big guys out to Tulsa a non-NRC race

instead of the NRC-rated CSC Invitational. In my opinion, either the team is wooing a new sponsor in the Tulsa region, or they are going for the $$$ as Tulsa is the second big money purse in domestic racing.

Either way it’s interesting.

err

I was trying to say -

It’s a little strange. At the official Toyota-United (or is it now United Pro Cycling Team? Changes release by release), Tulsa Tough is listed, but as a “non team event”. Whatever that is.

Also, because I’d never heard of the “Tulsa Tough”, I did some poking around. Apparently they secured NRC status for the *women’s race there. Yet Tuetenberg, Pic, and Van Guilder are here. Strange.

Yes, very strange.

Typically, a non team event means that a few riders will go, probably the local guys, but won’t have support such as mechanics, soigneurs,... That schedule was created at the beginning of the year, so something happened.

As far as the women’s race, there are basically 3 events happening at the same time, the Tulsa Tough series with one NRC crit, the just completed Women’s World Cup in Montreal and tomorrow’s CSC Invitational, also NRC-rated. Teams have to pick & choose what’s more important to their sponsors, and also some Canadian riders were riding with the National team at the World Cup so that makes it even more difficult.

High Road doesn’t care about NRC points, so it was an easy decision, Montreal & CSC. Colavita/Sutter Home sent their big guys to CSC as it is a much more prestigious race. Now Cheerwine split up their team and sent 4 riders to Tulsa – good move on their part as Kelly Benjamin has won 2 of the 3 crits (so far). Cheerwine is focused on winning the overall NRC Team Classification, which they are leading.

I’ve been writing about the Tulsa Tough & Montreal’s World cup on my blog ;)

Don't read too much into it...

...they are there for the paycheck. There’s little hope of them finding a new title sponsor.

Whoever goes

I recommend the corner of Highland and Wash Blvd. Sick turns through there.

Man that looks COOL!!!!

Unfortunately, I live in California and they never have bike races here ;) I went to a Crit once in San Francisco in the early nineties because “Lance was going to be there”... could have fooled me, I didn’t know one team from another let alone different riders. I’d love to catch some of the smaller action around SoCal if anyone can clue me in to when those happen.

I’ll keep an eye out. Have fun… take lots of pics. If you don’t have pictures… it never happened :)

Stuart O’Grady, the Australian quintiplegic, was seen still climbing to the finish line… using his lips alone.

This video is an attempt to show the ambience at the final hour of the Nice Ironman competition. A lame attempt i'll admit, but wth? If you're ever going to finish towards the end of an ironman, i suggest Nice as the place to do it. The applause and support and general ambience at the end is really remarkable. Dj's, pom-pom girls, people dancing, shouting, dance music blasting ... Some finishers just go on through, others raise their arms or just have a huge smile, one guy did some pushups while the dj counted for him, another did a cartwheel, some ran through with their little kids holding their hands. And this all 8 hours after the winners have finished.

When i went out my door to walk over to see the last hour or so of the Ironman, the first thing i saw was a guy across the street, pushing his triathlon bike, head hanging down to his chest, walking with a pronounced. Painful. Slow. Trudge. Medal around his neck. He'd done well. Hope he felt better the next day.

Then i got to the promenade and started seeing more of the people who'd finished: one guy asleep on the pavement with his wife by his side in all the raucous noise and confusion and crowds everywhere. Then the medical tent - massages, those heat blanket thingies, oxygen, people limping aorund, Oy!

Then every now and then you see a finisher with a medal around their neck who look fresh as a daisy, like they've just had a nice walk in the park.

Then finally you get to the finish line ... and that's the video. At the end there's a fireworks display (no one timed their finish to coincide with it this year) and then apparently a few hundred people stayed all night to party on the prom next to the beach until daybreak.

I could not do an ironman even if i wanted to, but i'll be there again next year to help welcome the last finishers in.
