Welcome to the new Podium Cafe and SB Nation
Hey Podium Cafe,
Today is the big day. We've switched your community over to the new SB Nation sports blog platform. My name is Trei, and I'm here to help you get adjusted to the new home we've built for you. If you have questions or trouble with the new system, post a comment in this thread and myself or one of the team (lovitt, sixfoot6 or odacrem) will try to point you in the right direction.
Before we begin, I want to let you know we still consider this a beta platform, so don't be surprised if you find a few bugs or if everything isn't exactly right yet. We hope you'll take the time to report any problems you encounter at bugreport@sbnation.com. We'll be continuing to make changes and improving things.
Please take a few minutes to read about what's new below. But if you just can't wait to jump in, here are some quick things to check out:
- Sign up for your SB Nation network account and claim your old blog accounts
- Once you're logged in, press your Z key in any thread with new comments
- Explore your dashboard and setup your profile
- Read the guide to the new FanPost editor
- Install the FanShot bookmarklet and post videos to Podium Cafe from YouTube or images from Flickr
- Click the "Rec" button on posts and comments to help other people find the good stuff.
- Customize display options on your Edit Settings page
What Has Changed
SB Nation Network Accounts - the Big Change
Readers across all of our blogs told us they wanted one account to use on every SB Nation blog. To make this work, we're requiring that everyone create a new SB Nation network account. In most cases you should be able to keep your old username, but a few of you may have to choose something new, since every other community in SB Nation will be going through this same transition. We tried to be as fair as possible in deciding who gets to keep which name, using a formula that takes into account length of membership and frequency of activity.
We want to make it as easy as possible for you to participate on all of our blogs, but we don't want to encourage everyone to start visiting rival team blogs and initiating flame wars. To maintain friendly communities we ask that you explicitly join each blog in order to participate. It's a two-click process, but it does means accepting each blog's community guidelines. Just as you join each blog individually, you can be banned on each blog individually.
You can claim old accounts from multiple SB Nation blogs, and your new username will be retroactively attached to all your old comments and diaries. So now you'll be able to access all your writings from your single profile page... like magic.
To get started, click here to claim your old blog accounts and create a new SB Nation network account.
FanPosts (the Section Formerly Known as Diaries)
We changed their name. Why? Because we took this major upgrade as an opportunity to leave behind some vocabulary that never made much sense for a sports blog. SB Nation is the network of, by and for fans, and these are the blog posts we make. So we call them FanPosts. When you're at a bar telling someone to check out your online sports opinions, you don't have to suggest they read your diary.
FanPosts are displayed differently on the homepage - we include your avatar to give more credit for the time you spend writing great posts. The new post editor has a WYSIWYG view that provides easy formatting. It also auto-saves drafts so you don't have to worry about losing your work when you compose a post within the web browser. And you can now associate teams, players and games with your posts: these tools promote your FanPosts on our new team, player and game pages - across the entire network.
The new system does not work like the old diary editor. For example, in HTML mode the new editor doesn't auto-create a new paragraph from two line breaks. But it does offer a whole array of new features. Look for the blinking help button on the right side of the FanPost editor for quick tips, and take a look at our full guide to writing FanPosts on the new platform.
IMPORTANT - if you write your posts in Microsoft Word or some other off-line editor, you will get the most reliable behavior if you cut & paste your post into the HTML view of the FanPost editor. And if you do that, remember to wrap <p></p> tags around each paragraph so your text doesn't run together.
Visual Redesign
This one is probably the most obvious change of all. Like other major websites working to improve readability for their audience, we've adopted a fixed-width layout optimized for the 1024 x 768 resolution used by the majority of Podium Cafe and SB Nation network users. Use the switcher below the user menu if you prefer the wider layout designed for 1280 monitors. We've introduced a top navigation bar with quick links into old and new sections of the site. We also polished a few edges, made some things larger, others smaller and moved a few boxes here and there. More changes and adjustments to come.
Search
We've completely replaced the old search engine with a new one. We're excited to make it easier to find old posts and comments, but we've only taken our first pass on the tools we're offering. We're focused on making search even better than what you had before, so please know that we're aware search is missing key features and we're working on it.
What's New
Recommending FanPosts
Some writing deserves more attention and more conversation. If you want to bump a FanPost up to the top and keep it there for awhile, just click the 'Rec' link under the body of the post. When a FanPost receives enough recommendations it will make the recommended list.
Auto-refreshing Comments
You no longer need to refresh the page to see new comments. If you're logged in, new comments will automatically appear on the page every few seconds. When you post a comment, the page will not refresh either. If you want to quickly cycle through all the new comments, you can press the C key on your keyboard. Unmark a new comment after you've read it with the X key. And use the Z key if you want to umark comments as you're cycling through them.
As you use these shortcuts to cycle through comments, press the R key to reply to the current comment. All these helpful keyboard shortcuts are listed at the top of each comments section for reference.
Recommending Comments
Now you can reward those folks who take the time to look up stats and make smart arguments in the comments. Next to each comment there is an 'actions' link that you can click to find the recommend and flag options.
Flagging Comments
To help the moderators on a site, we've built-in tools that let you flag comments that are spam, trolling or just plain inappropriate. Only moderators can see those flags.
FanShots
Many members of the community just want to post that one link, video, photo or quote, but don't need a full FanPost. We've got you covered: FanShots let you share YouTube videos, Flickr or PhotoBucket photos, quotes from articles, portions of chat transcripts, top 5 lists and simple links. If it's a video or image we'll put a thumbnail on the homepage when you post it.
For those of you who are experienced internet hunter-gatherers of sports material, install the bookmarklet onto the links bar of your browser and share FanShots with the community from wherever on the web you find that killer quote or photo.
Archives
It's much easier to find that post about a certain deadline trade or prospect retro feature. You can browse by year and month.
Avatars
Upload an image so folks can see your custom avatar on your profile, your FanPosts, and all your comments.
Network Profiles
Now that we have unified SB Nation network accounts, your profile will be your central hub for all of your activity on any blogs where you are a member.
Network bar
The top bar stays with you on all SB Nation blogs. It's a quick way to login and logout. When you're logged in, you'll see your avatar and screen name which links to your profile. The icon to the right leads to your Dashboard area where you can edit your settings, profile, account details and any FanPosts or FanShots you've published. As we add more blogs to the new SB Nation network, the My Blogs menu will be a handy way to navigate between the blogs you've joined.
-------
There are plenty more small changes and additions we've made, so please take a careful look around and explore this new system. We appreciate your patience and hope you'll help us improve the new platform for this and all the other SB Nation blogs.
And in case you missed it, you'll want to start by claiming your old blog accounts and creating a new SB Nation network account.

Quick question
Will new comments in fan posts appear automatically or is there something I need to set to show all new comments?

So, Clockwerks
How do we disassociate from a specific SB Nation blog? I’ve poked around the user interface, and don’t see an option for doing so. Thanks.

there currently isn't a way to do that
however, we have heard that request and are thinking about how we make that happen.
the hurdle is that we don’t want to make it easy to join a blog, talk trash, and then quickly leave so that the record of bad behavior is lost. I realize you’re not in that category, but we have the ‘join’ feature where you agree to community guidelines for a reason. obviously this is much more of an issue in other sports where we have rival teams/blogs.

that makes sense
But do you think there’s any way you could make a manual special exception for all of these cyclists who don’t really care about the A’s? I mean, it’s nothing embarrassing (you know, like being a Yankees fan), but I suspect there are probably a couple dozen here who didn’t quite understand that we were hooking our wagons to the A’s site longterm when we signed up for the new SB Nation logins.

Perhaps
if a user has no posts in a specific blog they can be removed. It eliminates the valid issue raised earlier.

we actually implemented this idea last night
you can now go to your profile and under ‘blog memberships’ click the ‘leave’ link on any blog you haven’t participated on before to remove it from your list.

As posted in the 2.0 Starts...NOW! thread
When I come to PodiumCafe, the front page looks like this:
and the only way I can read the content is by switching to User Mode which disables all the fonts and formats to give me plain (and a bit user unfriendly) text. But if I open the pages I want from there, I can then switch the stylesheets back on again and everything looks (I assume) normal:
This is with Opera on XP SP2
I’ve tried a few other SBNation blogs at random and they look OK, as do the Fanposts Fanshots etc. sections It’s just the PodiumCafe front page that is sulking.

Monty, are youn still seeing this?
Nobody else has spoken up about this behavior, so I’m wondering if it’s some kind of Firefox cache problem. Did you try clearing the cache? The browser seems to be drawing the SB Nation blogroll footer first, and rendering it incorrectly.

Still the same
Nothing to do with the cache, at least not on my PC since it gets cleared out completely every time I shut down. I agree it’s probably a rendering thing. I very briefly get to see the front page for a fraction of a second before that gets dumped on top. Turning off plug-ins, Java or javascript does nothing. Turning off images leaves the blob there, but in plain black rather than with that odd repeating texture, suggesting that Opera is choking on one particular image. And the SB Nation footer seems to work in the same way as it does on other sites: click on the header to see a different collection of blogs. Of all the SB Nation pages I have looked at, just this one doesn’t work as it should.

This should now be fixed!
It took me a little while to work it out, but the site is now rendering fine for me in Opera on XP. Is it okay for you?
The culprit was some bad markup in the Links sidebar widget on the front page, which was throwing Opera for a loop ;)

What a shock
to log in and have it look normal. It took me a while to realise because drawing that black box on was about the last bit of rendering Opera did. So I sat here for quite a while before realizing that it had been fixed. Nicely done and thanks.

Sorry, I meant Opera, not FF.
I’ll take a closer look in Opera tomorrow to try and reproduce the problem; I still wonder if it’s a cache issue since it’s only affecting you on Podium Cafe.

Beta feedback
I don’t know if this is the right forum to provide feedback, but here goes…
If you are in a thread with new posts, and click on a poster’s avatar, and then click the back button on your browser, all the posts that you have read will show as unread. Not a big deal, but it was a little pain in the live threads. You would come back to find 100+ posts unread.

Interesting
I think you may be the first person to encounter and mention this. What browser and OS are you using? We’ll see if there’s anything we can do, but I have a feeling that we’ll be stuck with this behavior in many browsers.
In the meantime, I might suggest that you open links to profile and other pages in a new browser tab or window, so as not to affect the Read / Unread state in your current live thread.

Interesting thing
Right after I posted my message, I clicked on my avatar to test my Mac system. Then I clicked my browser’s ‘Back’ button. The page I returned to didn’t have my post. I went out to the top level and then came back in. The post was there.
It almost seems like a cache/history problem.

Actually, all of this behavior
is a result of the AJAX functionality we’re using to publish comments. Javascript loads the activity into your current page, but since browsers don’t capture it as page content on load, it doesn’t exist when you hit the back button.
None of it’s ideal, but for now it’s sort of the price we’re paying for all this sweet real-time activity until we can figure a way around it. In a related issue, you won’t see your own new comments pop-in on a second browser tab (or another computer across the room) that’s logged into the same thread.
Glad you’re enjoying the format! We’re still working to improve things.

There's currently no way to delete comments.
So it wasn’t staring you in the face ;)
We may add an edit button at some point that can be used for a limited amount of time once a comment has been published. For now, we recommend you make use of Preview before publishing.
There’s a basic accountability concern with this – the removal of comments allowing people to revise history and change the flow of a thread. But I do think we need a way to allow people to fix mistakes, so we’ll likely be looking at this question again in the future.

Accountability?
Come on, this is a leisure site for cycling freaks so we can talk out of our collective asses and then make fun of each other (nicely) when we are inevitably wrong. There is no need for accountability. Not sure we get to vote, but if we do, I vote for an edit button and a delete comment button that will work forever. I seriously doubt anyone is going to abuse that sort of functionality. I mean, what would you even do? Go back and try to make yourself look smarter? Not possible… Maybe you could add something like I see in blogger where it will say “comment deleted by author” when someone chooses to delete a comment? You could do the same with an edit.
Besides that, the new site looks great and I love the “z” key feature. So much nicer than scrolling around looking for new comments. Particularly in the live race threads. Nice work kids!

shared platform
this same system serves our whole network of blogs, including sports where the conversations aren’t so, um, leisurely.
amazingly the topic of which AA pitching prospect is better than another can devolve in record time when discussed on the intertubes. and, yes, the back and forth gets serious enough where some folks would probably abuse the system by trying to edit their comment to make their original opinion seem smarter.
since this platform is shared we try to find happy middle ground where we keep rowdy conversations in check, but leave plenty of flexibility for the well-mannered cycling freaks.

Fair enough
and you guys are responsible for maintaining all of them so I can also see your reasons for uniformity.
But regarding your AA prospect example, and after seeing what goes on at this site, is there any doubt in your mind the cycling is far and away the best sport going? Or short of that, we at least have the best blog, right?

When you view user profiles, does the
“UID” stand for User ID, and is it showing us the actual order of when we first logged in as a User on the PdC? (Wow, are there really over 800 people that have registered on the site?) Why do some Users display the # of all their posts, and some only since the 2.0 version started? Just curious…..
