Right now,

we have four riders off the front at the 35km mark. Liquigas’s Roman Kreuziger (2nd on GC) is in there, so we can expect a big chase.

Also in the little group are, Johan Van Summeren (Silence-Lotto), Sebastien Rosseller (Quick Step) and Ronny Scholz.

03:09 PM: The four escapees
have about a minute-and-a-half on the field. With Kreuziger up there, we can imagine that the High Road crew will be ramping it up.

03:11 PM: Mmmmm….
The Kreuziger group has 2:25 on the field at 39km.

I'll go with gutsy

Has little to no chance of surviving, but since it’s a pretty flat race today, i think he’ll be able to hold on when the group catches him.

Are there bonus seconds for intermediate sprints today? Maybe he’s trying to grab up some extra seconds.

at least i think that's what this means

Here there perhaps was an agreement to the head. Roman Kreuziger (LIQ) leaves back into the pack.

a off topic (Vaughters words)

i only read know the cyclingnews about the new sponsor of slipstream.
I want to highlight the part of “Winning isn’t everything”.
when he say:

When he said that before, the teams to find sponsors only thought in victory (perhaps because of this one started there a network of doping), but for him ultimately this is not the most important because a team with personality and culture itself is enough and the rest comes by increaased. This man has a great vision and I hope he have great success..

by semprenaroda on Jun 20, 2008 9:23 AM EDT   0 recs

Or..

Hate to be cynical but you would expect a DS who isn’t winning to say that winning isn’t everything, wouldn’t you? Right now Vaughters has two things going for him: 1) an early and strong anti-doping stance and, 2) his good political connections. The anti-doping stance is (hopefully) becoming less unique as more and more teams adopt it. That leaves him only with #2 and eventually that will catch up with him if he fields a team that is uncompetitive, i.e. not winning. Eventually he needs to show that his team cam compete for the win.

by ursula on Jun 20, 2008 9:33 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I agree completely

After the shine of what they’re doing has worn off, they will be just another team in the peloton. And as just another team, winning pays the bills, and winning is everything. They are a huge PR machine, which is great for the sport in America. But in the European peloton, I think they’re too light on the talent to compete right now. And that makes sense. They are a “new” team and probably should be compared to other continental teams, not pro tour teams.

Hopefully this transfer season, they can sign a proven winner. They have some impressive young talent, good stage hunters and excellent time trialists. Now, they need someone that can be considered a threat on GC at European week-long stage races.

by PopUp Rolen on Jun 20, 2008 9:42 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

but he affirms that already could have a big star

but he preserves a american team integrity. Ok, can be political talks…

by semprenaroda on Jun 20, 2008 9:51 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Agreed to a point

Anyone can buy a team. If that was all there was to it, Slipstream would have already bought their talent and won a ton of races. JV has an idea of what he wants to do and he is doing it. He’s trying to build something here for the long haul. When your entire goal is just winning races, you get pressured just like t-mob and we all know their doping track record. As a fan I want to see them kickin’ ass and winning races but I know that winning isn’t as easy as so many on the outside think it is, regardless of talent. I don’t have many expectations, I just want to see them animate races and carry themselves in respectable, dignified manner. That’s why I’m a fan, not because they don’t win very much.

If I just had one more gear, I...

by SpunOut on Jun 20, 2008 10:29 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

good point

I guess my concern is that the invites will stop if they don’t win, and win soon. If they get a pro tour license, that may not be an issue….well….erm…who knows what’s going on there.

The newness of the team and their mission raked them some prestigious invites this year. Will they get the same next year?

by PopUp Rolen on Jun 20, 2008 10:40 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Thats a good point

I think it was a bit undeserved to get invited to the Tour and Giro in their first year based solely on their ethical stance and a few decent aquisitions

by Capisce on Jun 20, 2008 10:51 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Remember

at the time they were talking to the race organizers originally they were also the only “US” team likely to be invited (before Columbian/High Road was US) and from a marketing standpoint the ASO probably likes having a variety of teams.

by Katiek on Jun 20, 2008 10:56 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

+1

ASO is VERY aware of the draw the Tour has in the States. Otherwise, why would they be partnering with AEG? Invites aren’t as simple as people might think. Positive press, animating a race, national interests, etc. all go into it. I would be surprised to see a team with so much positive press not get an invite. There are a ton of teams out there that win much more than Slipstream, but have no personality and don’t figure into ASOs marketing plans. JV and Millar having raced on French teams know what the French want and how to grease the right wheels to get what they want. ASO was probably looking for something positive after last years’ debacle and Slipstream was exactly what they were looking for. I think, based on that, ASO made exactly the right choice.

If I just had one more gear, I...

Yep

Vaughters is looking smarter and smarter by the day. Who knew? I know I didn’t give him enough credit early on. Now I think he is quite capable of doing this job very well. Results are plenty good so far, too. Exceeded all expectations….Good enough to land the big sponsorship.

Dont agree

Exceeded all expectations? not for me, I expected more
What is it 5-6 victories so far? That is quite to be expected for a team with a number of well known “names”.

I understand

by Rolls on Jun 20, 2008 10:09 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I disagree

I think Slippies are having a solid year. They would have a few more victories but such is racing with crashes and mechanicals. Are they really doing any worse than some of the ProTour teams. Nope. And they don’t have huge name signings. They have great solid experience that is being passed along down to the younger guys. If DZ wasn’t out right now I think there’d be more threats to some wins. This year has had some major bugs hit the peloton as well. They all had it so I’m not making any excuses but it was a rough patch for teams with TOC and Paris-Nice. But again, such is racing. I think the GarMEN are doing what they planned and then some so mega huge kudos to the boys to a really good stuff. I wish them tons of good luck at le Tour.

By the way Sempre....

You remember Acacio Da Silva by chance? Dumb question, I know. I just ran across some pix of him in some old issues of a French cycling mag. I always thought he was a pretty classy rider.

Cycling.TV Gold/Premium subscription warning

Looks like I missed the boat on this one, but maybe it’ll be of help to some of you…

So, I upgraded my Premium to Gold before the Giro.

Guess what? It’s not an upgrade. It’s an additional subscription. I was just billed GBP19.99 for my redundant Premium account on top of my existing, active US$99.99 Gold subscription.

I’ve just sent emails to all of the various narrowstep/cyclingtv/jumptv addresses asking for a refund. We’ll see how it goes.

FYI: Paypal My Account -> History -> Show: Subscriptions -> choose date range -> Search -> Details -> Cancel Subscription.

Sigh. Should have seen this coming.

by gregm on Jun 20, 2008 11:01 AM EDT   0 recs

You shouldn't have any problem getting the money back

We’ve been dealing with a few issues like that. Frankly, I agree it’s a bit of an oversight to keep a user’s previous subscription active when they sign up for the Gold package, although I don’t know the logistics behind it all so I can’t really pass comment.

If you don’t hear anything back about this, get in contact with me and I’ll make sure it gets done. I think I’ve posted my email address here before, but you can also message me on the Innertube and it’ll ping straight through to my inbox (I’m “Halverde” on there). Bear in mind that I’m not working over the weekend, though.

Me and Rebecca have been tweaking our respective bits of the site. It’s definitely more user friendly than the current incarnation (which is, admittedly, not an incredible feat).

How about embedded CTV?

We (@CyclingFever) inquired about this service a few months ago, and never heard back from you guys after a ‘we’re working on it, busy, busy, busy’ reply.
It would be nice to incorporate live cycling, especially with the Tour coming up, for cyclingfans.

Any progress on that?

Sorry for asking over here…

just saw a notice that thomas dekker is worried that his tour is at risk. he apparently caught a bad case of the flu before the tour de suisse, and it took him a while to recover. he’s worried that his preparation hasn’t gone especially well, and that he may not have the legs to ride. he will make a decision with his team management in the coming days.
