Bennati and Grand Tour History in the Making?

I was just thinking of the possible contenders for the green jersey at this year's Tour now that Boonen is out and right at the top of the list is the Handsomest Guy in the Peloton (HGP) Daniele Bennati.  Sure there other other contenders but in thinking of Bennati I thought of this:

If he wins the green jersey then he will have won the points competition in three consecutive Grand Tours, a mini-Tiger Slam as it were.  He won last year's Vuelta (In part because Freire dropped out to concentrate on the World's but hey- a win is a win) then he won this year's Giro.  So the Tour would make three.  So my questions is, has anyone done this before- won three consecutive points jerseys.  If not, any guesses on  how quickly did a rider win all three (like Bert's chance to win the three overalls in the shortest amount of time ever)?

Update!

It has been done before and by three different riders, only one of which has done it in three consecutive Grand Tours. Wikipedia has the info: But Wiki doesn't note (very obviously) that Merkxx did it in three consecutive Grand Tours: 1) the 72 Tour, 2) the 73 Vuelta, and 3) the 73 Giro. (Remember back then the Vuelta was a spring race.) Nobody has done the feat in one calendar year.

Still if HGP does this feat it will be quite remarkable. Given how the trend in pro cycling is toward specialization not only of sprinter/GC/climby/classics/punchers etc but also riders targeting fewer races this type of accomplishment, again like Bert's proposed feat, will be quite rare as time goes by.

who are the other contenders?

I don’t mean to sidetrack the thread but I don’t know the answer to your question so my TINY mind quickly wandered to thinking about who are the green jersey contenders this year?
I keep thinking that Thor Hushovd is a big contender along with Bennati. I am not sure if Robbie has it this year although his stage win this week has me thinking he will mix it up a bit. Zabel will have more than a few top 3 finishes especially since poor Milram needs to do something this year. Who else is there? Will High Road, I mean Team Columbia have a sprinter for the tour as I assume Cav won’t be there. I realize this is early speculation but since I can’t even begin to figure out the Maillot Pois Rouges yet this will have to keep me going.

As far as I know

Cav is intending to be there. Don’t know whether he’ll do the whole thing though or just try and nick some stages early. I have no great love for Cav, despite being British. Not a patch on Benna.

On your original question Ursula, I’m afraid I haven’t the foggiest!

TdF green jersey contenders

Is Freire gonna be there? Both Robbies will and Cav and The God of Thunder and whatever QS is throwing up.

I assume QS will 'throw up' Steegmans

Might be good for a stage or two….

The significance of the green jersey

Ain’t what it used to be. The lack of people really giving it a go anymore kinda makes it just another filler competition. Personally I could care less, a stage win trumps a green jersey without a stage win any day. For Benna it would be something I guess. But the fact that Freire thinks it is not worth worrying about takes it down a notch in my book. When the world’s most gifted finisher doesn’t care, why should I.

Interesting...

In a day or two I plan on writing a post that tangentially hits at what you are getting at. I agree that a points jersey ain’t worth much to a top rider and in that sense the “history Benna may be making is more of a trivial nature than a, “OH MY GOD!!!! THAT”S AMAZING!!!!” type of thing.

But what I find interesting is that if you look at the VDS scoring system you get what seems to me an accurate placement of its importance. Looking at that you can see why Freire chose the Worlds (worth 250 points) over the points jersey (worth 120 points). Obviously I have it backwards but the VDS scoring is trying to match the importance riders place on various races and in this case I think it does pretty well in ranking a points jersey of a grand tour slightly below a “Best of the Rest” competition- and if you win two points jerseys you got a load of VDS points equal to winning a top classic race. (All three points jerseys in a single year would roughly equal a monument win.) Makes sense to me as that would show a consistency as a sprinter over a whole year.

It used to mean more

When more people were targeting it and there were more top sprinters riding for it. For instance when Zabel was targeting (and winning) it, the peloton was packed with top sprinters duking it out for the jersey. The focus has just drifted somewhat since then. I’m not saying it is not worth anything, just not what it used to be worth.

Hottest Guy in the Peloton

I stopped reading there.

But I believe I need a ruling: Is it or is it not required to include a photo when posting about Benna? I believe it is.

I vote it is required

Veloki has created a funny cool Benna Bobblehead now just posted in the Fanshot section

After all this chatter and it still isn't here....

And I have to say, I was looking back at older photos and he was not nearly as hot before as he is this year.

Grand Tour Points Jersey

Ursula, this is a great question and one which I will add to the ‘Winter Trivia Quiz’. So for those who are watching these comments you will have a leg up when the question come around next winter. So pay attention!

Excellent trivia find!

I dig this sort of thing. Thanks :-)

He’s already among a small number of active riders who have won stages in all three grand tours, thanks to this year’s Giro wins.

So, Merckx is one of the three,

but who are the other two to have won the points competion in all three Grand Tours? (the Wiki link didn’t work)?

Answer can be found here.

Great trivia find, and along with Gavia, I can’t get enough of this kind of stuff. Cycling Revealed’s Winter Trivia is a blast. Look out PdC, I’m gunning for the top spot this year…

I think this was on the quiz last year...

jaja and amadjsprinterwhosenameican’tspell. i seem to remember answering this one, anyway.

Sometime in the future

we’ll have to assemble a “Best all time Sprinters crashes.” Abdujaparov and Jalabert would figure prominently from the Tour. 2 of the ugliest crashes of all time.

The funny thing about Abdu’s is he did it all on his own and crashed himself :-)

I believe the Abdu crash

had something to do with an oversize and dastardly capitalist can of coca cola which happened to be by the barrier….

by Albertina on Jun 23, 2008 3:33 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Look closely as

he puts his head down and starts drifting over while he’s winding it up. If it hadn’t been the coke can it would have been the barrier itself 2 meters later.

Remember kids – keep your head up when sprinting all out.

I give you

the exploding pinwheel! Watch the left side of your screen at about 55 seconds in. Truly spectacular.
