Open Thread

Travel day today. Thanks in advance to anyone who feels like getting things moving around here in my absence. Also, Tour de Suisse VDS results are up, left sidebar. Quite a race we've got now. Not that my team is even faintly relevant...

Crap flows to the surface in other sports as well

Former Finland crosscountry-skiing coach Kari Pekka Kyrö is currently spilling the beans on what went on behind the scenes on the national team in the nineties and early 2000, culminating in the Hemohes-scandal in Lahtis 2001. According to him there was an ongoing dopingprogram in cooperation with the russian national team. Only a select number of top riders and officials were in on it and he’s now admitting to the use of EPO as well. The most embarassing news from a swedish perspective is the criminally naive decision of a swedish official to help cover up suspect bloodvalues.

No big surprises in what he’s saying but it does put a spotlight on the fact that other sports haven’t come as far as cycling in admitting to existing problems.

Absolutely

Track and Field has just as shadowy a past, if not more so than cycling. The US team was very good about keeping things under wraps about their athletes during the Oz Olympics.

anyone else getting a "file truncated" message on the overall spreadsheet?

wondering if it’s the upload / file size limit on the site (or something) or a local (mac?) problem here. They have opened before…

Wohoo! The Sneaky Snake Ricco is riding the Tour!

Now we will get tons of ill-adviced whining and yacking from the Prince of Posing to cheer up those long flat stages. Saunier Duval confirmed it today. And as a more positive bonus,Leonardo Piepoli will also ride.

by Jens on Jun 24, 2008 10:22 AM EDT reply actions

Really?

Wow this is fantastic! In any other sport he’d have already had his cheeks rearranged a few times over, mouthy and nasty as he is. Hopefully that job will get done during the Tour! Who will he be hatin’ on though? Cunego? Evans? His own team? France? I so hope he messes with the wrong guy.

On the other hand…he can ride, so this throws another big wildcard into this Tour. Should be good!

Si...

This is very excellent news…

OOOhh, France would be good!

Imagine mile after mile of pissed off frenchmen at the side of the road spitting obscenities at The Cobra. Someone please translate: “BONJOUUUUUUUURRRRRRR ya cheese-eatin’ surrender monkeyes!” into italian so Riccardo can use it in L’Equipe.

by Jens on Jun 24, 2008 10:45 AM EDT up reply actions

Cracking me up

I just spit coffee all over my laptop thinking about that.

Or, all of France hissing/coiling/lunging at him, to mock, as he rides past. Oh man. Hey every sport needs a villian or two to make it interesting.

Millar could do it

He’s Scottish and speaks French. And he used to ride for SD. It’s a match made in heaven.

And another team announced

Due Dekker said he will be ok for the Tour he’s left out of the selection. Namens now announced are:
Denis Menchov, Laurens ten Dam, Pieter Weening, Oscar Freire, Juan Antonio Flecha, Sébastian Langeveld, Koos Moerenhout, Bram Tankink en Joost Posthuma.

Little support in the mountains. Only Weening Ten dam and maybe Tankink but by far not reaching the quality of Popo and other helpers. But Menchov can win his GT without a team.. He has already proved that in the Vuelta

strong team

agree about the mountains, but as you say, menchov is good at flying solo.

by Jen See on Jun 24, 2008 11:22 AM EDT up reply actions

He'll have Evans in support

Not too shabby…

Dekker

what is going on with him?

First he was sick, then a slouch and finally he was ok??

by Bruce Suomi on Jun 24, 2008 12:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Feeling weak

A very well informed source, whom I’m not going to reveal, told me he just didn’t get into shape due to illness twice. He did an Alps recon just before Tour de Suisse and got the flu. He might have been in better shape had he not ridden Suisse.
He’s now riding the Nationals, whereas he should have gone with Menchov and do the Alps for a second time.

DZI, I see your Cruyuff quote, so I assume you are Dutch.

What happened to the Dutch (again) this year in the Euro competition? So much talent, and such poor results.

by pigilito on Jun 24, 2008 2:14 PM EDT up reply actions

One poor result

though the Russians are coached by probably the best soccercoach in the world. He’s Dutch also.
Holland played fantastic football (The best the Euro’s have seen in years, according to German, Italian, English and French comments), beating the WC and vice-WC in the 1st round, but just had a bad QF. Bad luck, bummer, but it happens.

Fortunately the Tour starts soon. ;-)

Thanks for asking and welcome to the Podium Cafe group at CyclingFever.

Thanks

Too bad, he was my dark horse for the Tour….
Is he riding the Vuelta instead?

by Bruce Suomi on Jun 24, 2008 2:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Ha!

I only just noticed that the open thread is in Happy Hour today. License to cause trouble, there…

So its my first time playing VDS. And I didn’t realize how hard it is to pick a team! 50 points for 10 riders does not go far. So I have to decide on sentimental choices [Hincapie] or riders that are more likely to get more points.

Choices choices…

by ZoeRochelle on Jun 24, 2008 10:05 PM EDT reply actions

For the Giro I really wanted to pick little Andy

(who I knew wasn’t riding) and I believe an email I got said I could go ahead and pick him, and even my neighbors if I wanted to. Just shouldn’t expect to win. ha ha! I’m struggling with the Tour selection right now too. 50 pts for 10 rides is really hard to do. I’m seriously pissed work got in the way of me getting in a year long submission. Not that it would’ve been all that mush easier but it does allow a little more room to play with.

Olympics

I am too lazy today to start any new threads so I’m linking this here. On CNN they have another article on the Smog issues over in Beijing. Cars are being pulled to help reduce the amount. Also it has a note that if the smog is too bad for outdoor endurance events of more than an hour, they will delay them? Does that mean in the day or later in the week? Cycling is certainly keeping any eye on this.
