Team Columbia Goes Blue

Columbia2_medium

The kids over at wieleruitslagen.be have all the fun. Here, they say, is the new jersey for Team Columbia, a fabulous little number in blue. Certainly, an upgrade. Even better, we will be able to find them in the bunch far more easily, as there will now be one less white team.

Another

fashion disaster. Oh well. It won’t slow them down. Though they may be banned from events in Milan.

Should add

If they’re stuck with that color from the sponsor, it’s otherwise a decent jersey. The black trim and the little suns are all improvements.

black trim is pretty cool, i think

it’s not half bad, compared to some of the other options out there…

I like it! Black shorts, I hope?

that would be fab!

No photos of the shorts have appeared…

I kind of like it

Big fan of darker blue, and it’s more understated than some of the Nascar jerseys out there. I’m for it.

It's OK

My initial reaction was, it’s Milram’s color. And that’s not a compliment.

I wonder if the rest of the kit is all blue too

If it is, it might be a bit much. But that’s really a personal thing, as that shade if blue isn’t one of my favorites. Then again, a lot of times, kits look just so so in a photo or illustration and not half bad when really on a person. I do like the suns on the shoulders and the black trim.

by Veloki on Jun 25, 2008 11:26 AM EDT reply actions

The sun on the shoulders is a real help in identifying a rider in motion!

Anybody know when they’re announcing their roster for the Tour? I’ve got all my fingers crossed for Michael Barry to make the team…

Nashbar

Has left the building. The assault on my eyes has been lifted from that fugly white/black Fat Albert goes to the races jerseys they were wearing at the start of the year.

bhahahahah!

Fat Albert goes to the races. Freakin’ priceless.

I say they go with white shorts

Then they will truly realize their goal of transforming their team into a band of marauding Smurfs with Cavendish leading the charge as Vanity Smurf.

My vote: blech.

I generally don't have much issue with kits

and I’m again okay with this one. The pack got so overloaded with white that at this point I am so okay with almost anything not. I think this will look good on the riders and we should be able to pick them out pretty easy. :-)

With so little time before the Tour,

maybe they opted for something simple. So, hopefully this just hastily assembled for the Tour with plans of revamping it for next season.

I bet it will look much better in action.

blue

it’s not gerolsteiner sky+aqua blue, nor Astana aqua with rising sun yelow. Milram blue is very close, but with white. It’s definitely not quickstep blue/white. but, gee… isn’t that an awful lot of blue?

Were we not complaining about too much blue BEFORE we were complaining about black & white?

Makes me appreciate navigare—you can spot them a mile away in the fog.

And, of course, there’s the (since partially discredited) research saying that red, not blue, correlates with winning teams in one-on-one sports:
here
(BTW Don’t pay good money to read past the abstract…there’s not much more to it. And if that were true, one shudders to think what Cofidis would ride like in blue.)

Bring back the chest stripe. Bring back two contrasting primary colors. Bring back one big contrasting diamond. Kids nowadays. Keep off my lawn. Wipe your feet.

of course, blue is my fav color, and this is a nice shade….

simple, clean, understated…

I tend to agree with you

Given the Columbia brand and colors, it ain’t half bad. Yep, I think its a very clean understated jersey. I’m much more likely to buy that than the Subway jersey.

I like blue kits in general

I don’t love the yellow, but overall it looks good. My favorite all time kit was Fassa Bortola circa 2004-2005.

I was hoping...

they would go with bibs made out of rip-stop nylon with leg/knee warmers that zipped off. D-Ring strap closure cargo pockets on the side. Available in Heather, Ash, Sand and Dark Camel.

But, I guess it’s ok that they sorta match the jersey.

's OK

Rabo – ugly. Cofidis – ugly. Leakygas – very cool. Euska-skadi – sweet orange and black shorts with the stealth black Orca. The old Disco – triple boring. I was watching an old ‘Chasing Lance’ this week and that team might have been able to shred but they had no style. LA with the long shorts, tall socks, black shoes. Metallic blue Trek might have been the ugliest way ever to spend $5k on bike. Lugged round tubes and not a curve in sight. The bottom bracket and head tube… neither ever looked right. The large sizes seemed to have a top tube slope that went UP from the head tube to the seat.

I like it too. Nice color of blue.

I am glad it doesn’t having the Milram style racy stripes. Ugh. Milram’s jersey reminds me of a referee’s stripes. The yellow sunny spots are going to make it much easier to pick out the boys in a peloton.

I do agree there is too much blue in the pro peloton though. I ran the numbers. Out of 18 pro tour teams 11 have blue as the main color or a main color. Black and red come in at #2. It doesn’t make sense if the purpose is to get noticed for the sponsor why not have a more distinct jersey? Maybe the blue ribbon is the winner psychological aspect comes into play? Who knows.

Blue as main color or one of the main colors:

1. AG2R – white and blue
2. Astana – blue with yellow
3. Bouyges Telecom – blue and white
4. Columbia/High Road – blue with yellow
5. Française Des Jeux – white with blue
6. Gerolsteiner – blue and white
7. Lampre – blue and pink
8. Liquigas – green with blue
9. Quick Step – white and blue
10. Rabobank – orange with blue
11. Milram – blue with white

No blue

1. Caisse d’Epargne – black and red
2. Cofidis – red with yellow
3. Crédit Agricole – white and green
4. Euskaltel-Euskadi – orange
5. Saunier Duval-Scott – yellow
6. Silence Lotto – black and red
7. CSC Saxo Bank – white, red and black

Why does beautiful purple get shunned? It is Donny Osmond’s favorite color. [I used to be his biggest fan and I had purple socks just like his.]

by ZoeRochelle on Jun 25, 2008 2:36 PM EDT reply actions

Purple, hmmm...

I’m sure there’s some marketing research reason, but if you look around, how many brands, logos, etc. do you see with purple? Micheli Bartoli rode on the Carrera-Asics (mid-late 90’s?) and they had some kits that were White/Purple/Orange that weren’t unattractive.

Asics - circa 1998 (Purple/Orange)

I found an example here but I can’t figure out how to post the picture.

true on the blues...

however, they are all different shades of blue (one of the main advantages of blue) and for several of the kits, blue is not the predominant color.

as regards to CDE and SL, those kits are almost identical…..

yeah, I actually like that

how about animals for all of them? barloword or Navigare can be mountain goats… CSC, bulls…All of SD can be snakes…Rock racing can be lionfish… Milram can be possums.
