Non-Cycling: Euro 2008

The greatest couple of months for eurosport weenies like us continue. The Giro is over and we have a couple of weeks to kill before Le Tour so howz about you dip some Footie in your Cyclysm.

Euro 2008 kicks off tomorrow at 12:00 EST (9:00 PST... Semprenaroda / Jens... you're on your own figuring out the local times :) with the Swiss taking on the human Sequoia Jan Koller and the Czech Republic.

I was sort of wondering what I was going to do with myself this weekend and now I have an answer. Fish + Chips + Guinness + Euro 2008!

To help you with your planning, I've put together a little excel spreadsheet with fixture time (all in EST) and date for group play and a finals bracket. Time sort of caught up on me here or I would have organized those of us that care into a wee pool. Here's a link to that file.

Deutschland, Deutschland über alles, Über alles in der Welt!!!!!!

[UPDATE] Screwed up the bracket... I had the first round match ups confused.  It has been corrected. Re-download and carry on.

Forza Azzurri!

Can you explain why the Germans are favored? I know why Italy isn’t (Cannavaro’s injury), but… Germany?

I think the German's have a better grouping...

... Italy looks like it’s in the Group of Death though… France, Italy and The Netherlands with a little bit of Romania added for flavor. Who ever comes out of there should be considered a favorite. Germany plays Austria, Croatia and Poland… not quite the same as forcing your way through Orange triangles to put a shot on goal.

The fixtures are all in Austria and Switzerland though… so maybe the Östreichers get a little bit of a boost…

Si

But we will be battle-tested. The German WC team looked awfully green. What will they do when they find out Lukas Podolski is a Polish double-agent? Also, I miss Christian Ziege and his mohawk.

German and Italy

are europe’s most consistent teams in Euros and World Cups. I think that is the biggest reason. Because in terms of players, there is France, Spain, Portugal, Holland … but these two are indeed those that rarely disappoint.

Dark Horses, i look for Croatia, Poland and Switzerland .

Tomorrow is Turquey-Portigal !!!

OK

so why is there more red than green?

BTW, there’s a town at the end of Cape Cod where we visit a lot, where the flag of Portugal is everywhere. Especially during the World Cup.

"If writing too much about the Classics is wrong, I don't want to be right."

by Chris... on Jun 6, 2008 7:51 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

i think

there is no reason.

The green means hope.
The red means the blood of those who died for independence from Portugal.
the yellow is a sphere that represents the Portuguese Colonial Empire and the portuguese sea discovery.
The 5 blue shields represents the five king’s moors, that our first king won. And represent the battle of Ourique. The leggend say that was 1 portuguese agains 100 moors and we won!!
And there is seven yellow castles that simbolise the victory of the portuguese against the moors and spanish.

The history of Portugal is so beautiful, i’m a history fan.

Portugese fisherman.

There are a lot of Portugese immigrants in New England and New Jersey. Mostly working fish boats is why they came, some fishing camps were around way before the Pilgrims. Think Manuel in “Captains Courageous”. There is a great Portugese style restaurant right on the point in New Jersey across from the Status of Liberty – or there was 10 years ago.

It looks that way...

I can’t find any definitive word on it though… but since this match is a tune up friendly for WC qualifying, I imagine he might want the time with his national team.

Also, there’s a chance that Freddy Adu could start for the US side. That’d be cool.

Freddy Adu

is from Benfica. He seems a good player and he came 3 or 4 times at the end of the game and made goal. But it was little used by Camacho, maybe more luck with Quique Flores, the new coach.

Sunday's matchups are...

Austria v. Croatia and Germany v. Poland… talk about history on the field!

US v. Argentina is on at 19:30 EST on ESPN Classic. That’s a FULL day of soccer coverage on ESPN… God Help Me. Allow me then to dictate your Sunday lineup for you… best go get the ductape now… the children are going to be ignored on the 8th of June this year…

8:30AM PST – Dauphine Prologue – C.TV
9:00AM PST – (overlapping) Austria vs. Croatia – ESPN2
11:45AM PST – Germany vs. Poland – ESPN2
4:30PM PST – US MNT vs. Argentina – ESPN Classic

That looks to me like a big ‘ol heapin’ helpin’ of eurosport.

Landon Donovan will once again hope to have the opportunity to earn his 100th cap for the United States. The USA’s all-time leading scorer, who is seeking to become the fourth-youngest male player in history to accomplish that feat, has been sidelined with a groin strain that forced him to miss the last two international matches against England and Spain.

I’m guessing he injured himself by tripping while putting his panties on.

Do we know yet if we'll have live coverage for it on 69?

And possibly know what time they’re starting? Is there anything else that can possibly be crammed into Sunday?
Philly, Daphne, Soccer (endless day of viewing), and oh yeah, a planned 3 hour bike ride that is already looking to be shortened with high temps and humidity, and a bday party? I’m thinkin’ since I show up late to meetings at work for this stuff, that a late arrival to the bday may need to be considered. And here I thought I we were on a break for a wee bit.

Portugal over Holland in the final
the semis will be great with Portugal beating Germany and the Dutch over Italy.

German vs Portugal

German, Italy and France are the nations that i have more affraid. i think Portugal never won against them, german i’m not so sure.

I hope Portugal in the 8-final don’t play with German.

I’m seeing the last games of Portugal, and nothing special.

The stage of clearance (google translate, i hope you understand, lol) for Euro 2008 was the worst of Scolari.

We are dependent on the magic of Ronaldo

HAA, always that Scolari tried to use a tactic without Deco it was a disaster. And the Deco has not played in Barcelona. Deco “The Magician” is ou number 10.

In a bet i put German against Italy and italy won. You can see here.

i hope

or Ricardo defends the penaltis :)

In Euro 2004, Portugal vs England on penalties
Ricardo takes the gloves to defend the last penalty and he did it.
Next penalti he ask to Scolari to score and score.

What a mythical day.
In Mundial 2008, England lost again with Portugal on penaltis.

Did you really bet on a 1-1 tie with Turkey???

I don’t think you’re giving your countrymen enough credit. So you’ve got 2 goals made against CZR 1 goal and zero for SUI and TUR. So, unless something reeeaally crazy happens, like a 4-0 blowout between the Swiss and the Turks… Portugal will definitely make it out of group play.

Hey Chris… did you notice that the Azzuri are playing just around lunch time on Monday? I hope there’s a sports bar near your office.

my explanation

Portugal begins almost always bad in Cups
Euro 2000, we are loosing for 2-0 against England im first half and thanks our” England syndrome” we managed to win in for 3-2..
Mundial 2002, you remember, don’t you. Our loose against USA for 3-2, what a shame…lol
In Euro 2004 win loose against Greece, 2-1 or 1-0, don’t remember.
In Mundial 2006 we wi against Angola only 1-0.
Honestly i think Turquey was better, and Portugal did a great game too. In the qualification Portugal made some very bad games (loose against Poland 2-01!!!)

Ok, but was a bad bet of mine.
About Czech-Switzerland if wasn’t that stupid goal i hit.GRRR
How Rosicky don’t play iin this Euro, poor Czech Republic, has no chance then.
