Versus Buys Five More Years of TdF
According to the publication Marketwatch, Versus is buying five more years of Tour de France coverage for $27.5 million, including English language rights in Canada. It goes on to say that the rights are "risky" due to no Lance riding, but low. So does anyone here know what they are currently paying? Ad how do you like the deal in general? Oh, and I like my hot dogs plain- no ketchup or mustard or relish *gag*. A well made hot dog deserves to be savored for what it is.

OK
You made your word limit.
GREAT NEWS! (Versus, not your word limit) I have a new policy with those guys: it’s all appreciated. Yes, the SAAB ads are annoying, but SAAB is spending money to bring us Cycling. Well, so is Versus, and I’m done nitpicking over how they can do it better. The sport has gotten too close to the cliff…
I actually think it’s a good investment, and the timing might prove to be pretty canny. I doubt ASO are charging top dollar at the moment.

great news
this is good to hear. one thing versus has to do is to tap the internet streaming market. them partnering w/ cyclingtv is good but i wonder if they can do it better (technology speaking)....I love the early wake up calls in july and am looking forward to it.

streaming
exactly for those people, like me. that’s the advantage of cyclingtv. but maybe they need a push from a competitor instead of a partner?

They had streaming up for the first day last year
And it was great. As I recall, someone kept providing the feed and then it was shut down. I watched several days of it that way. I think they could really capitalize on this.

Bargain price
27 mil for 5 years is cheap! 5 mil a year is peanuts. They probably will spend a million or two more on their costs. 7 million a year say, for 200+ hours of programming?
Thats 50 hours of ads. About 10 hours of prime ad time – 600 minutes. $10K a minute for prime ad time on the Tour? and that makes up their cost essentially. The other 40 hours are profit.
The Ad price numbers are all WAG’s and I guess the good spots might be less, but still.
They run like 4 hours in the morning, repeat in the afternoon then 2 hours or so at night right? That is more than 200 hours but the chargeable prime hours should be about right.
This number leads to all sorts of things. Based on the European market, I would guess that the Tour takes in more revenue as the budgets of all the Pro Tour Teams combined.

This is good news
I’ve only been able to get Versus on my cable stations for the last two years, and even though there is a lot to nitpick about the broadcasts, it’s MUCH better than not getting the coverage at all. And somehow, I perversely like that it’s on a station with bull fighting and bbq contests.
by Katiek on Jun 9, 2008 3:54 PM EDT 0 recs
BBQ contests?
Do those come after the bull fighting? The timing of that would make sense, but since I never watch anything on there besides cycling, I would not know.. And I, like Bethie, am another Versus lover. Thanks Versus! You make the fact that my #1 Tivo WishList item is anything with the keyword “cycling” in it not totally pointless. Phil, Paul, and Bob are awesome. Al is tolerable as long as you let the other three talk more. And as for the numerous complaints in the live race threads here, that stuff is 24 carat gold for Versus. It is real time feedback from cycling fanatics who are watching their channel, and watching their commercials closely enough to snark on them. How can that not make the Versus suits all warm and fuzzy? They should pay us for that stuff….

Yay!
Yay! Yay! I am one of those unabahsed Versus lovers. I like the magazine program on Sunday afternoon. I love Bob Roll. I think it’s charming that as Phil gets older he gets the riders names and statistics wrong, and that Paul does nothing to correct him. I love the little subtleties of the commentary “well, there’s another french rider on our screen but since all the cameramen are french…”
Oh, the cat is amongst the pigeons now, I reckon. Good job Versus.

HD HD HD
I hope this is on the HD Versus/Golf channel.
Right now Cyclysm Sundays is not shown, instead they have infomercials.

Amen brother...
... let’s see this stuff in HD. In fact… hey Time Warner… how about coughing up some real HD channels too!

Both excellent
parts of a pigs or cows anatomy! Underrated!
And I second the hope that the HD channel gets the Tour feed next month.

Rules
We don’t have a lot of rules on the Podium Cafe, but one of them is to avoid direct criticism. Another is to avoid politics. And last is to avoid discussing the contents of hot dogs. Please take note.

I confess...
... I’ve been looking for a reason to use the word “snouts” all day and I jumped on my one and only opportunity. I too, could have saved it for the Boonen thread.

i'd rather shell out for ppv ....
w/o having the annoying in-show promos for the other “programming” that is on versus….
and… i stay as far away from HD as i possibly can (it’s a vision thing)
