New Blog: UW Dawg Pound launches! Bar-right-arrows

CTV Beta debuts

Wow. Was I the only one that thought they were holding out on customer service for the last two years because all of their attention was turned to a new website that would be beyond anything any of us could imagine.

Well...erm...I guess not. Granted, I have not perused any functionality, and I am forming my opinion only from a design standpoint. And from that standpoint only, CTV remains firmly entrenched at the back of the autobus of media-driven websites.

Working in website design myself, I give it a D-.

Use this post to explain your likes/dislikes about the new site and to let everyone know cool or uncool features you discovered.

I'm hoping the functionality of this beast more than makes up for its lack of style.

Piling on

I went to see if I could finally watch races on demand on my Mac, and lo and behold, it doesn’t recognize my username, password or email. Anyone else having luck logging in?

new password

To login to the beta site you have to use the new password they sent you in the email notifying you of the beta roll-out.

they sent an e-mail?????

Ha!

I started the login process, myself, and then came here to post a “Let’s Get Constructive Feedback” diary going (while I waited for the login to complete).

And then some loud-assed sound came through my speakers, and I had to hit Stop.

And who is nmnathletics.com?

C’mon, guys. Seriously?

by Sui Juris on Jul 1, 2008 9:03 PM EDT   0 recs

Huh?

Okay, so I signed up for/got suckered into the Premium Gold package in the US, sometime in April (I believe. It was well after my DIAF CTV post after the Het Volk). So why do I see this?

Import Giro
Purchase Date: 05/30/2008
Expiration Date: 07/14/2008
Import Premium
Purchase Date: 05/30/2008
Expiration Date: 07/14/2008
Import Vuelta
Purchase Date: 05/30/2008
Expiration Date: 07/14/2008

None of those dates make a lick of sense to me, and even if they’re beta issues, I shouldn’t be seeing/concerned with them.

My next move: offer CTV a (slight) discount on my normal professional hourly rate. It’ll be cheap in comparison to the entire company crashing and burning.

by Sui Juris on Jul 1, 2008 9:07 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

ditto

i’ve got the same purchase dates as sui juris, but my expiration dates are all over the calendar (march 2009, dec 2009, august 2010)

just who is nmathletics.com?

this almost smells like a fishing scam…

send an email requesting folks re-register to a site that redirects you somewhere else (with a non-encrypted password along with your email in the same message). Mmmmm

I noticed nmathletics as well

and checked to see where they are registered, and it says the Bahamas

When did they send an email?

I tried to log in with no luck but did a quick run through emails and don’t see anything. Can anyone give me a date to look for?

i switched my email address recently

because I realized I hadn’t received an email from cycling.tv in over a year (no response to a complaint even, but I figured it out for myself in the end – or maybe they sent me something and I never received it). I wondered if hotmail was considering them as spam, so I switched my email at ctv to gmail instead… particularly since my husband gets emails from them every so often at the email address attached to his paypal account that we used a few years ago for the ctv subscription (but not recently). Made me wonder why he as a “non-subscriber” was getting emails while I as a “subscriber” was not …

Notice of Intent

When CTV/JumpTV crashes and burns, I may well end up bidding on the assets in bankruptcy (i.e., the internet broadcast rights). Re-sign Brian and Anthony for sure. I’ll need at least a few tech dorks (Kevin? Clydesdale?), two marketing people (Lyne, Gavia?), and a customer service queen (don’t worry, Nikki, it’s already yours). The queue starts here.

article about JumpTV's new owner

http://www.reportonbusiness.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20080701.wrwang02/BNStory/Business/?page=rss&id=RTGAM.20080701.wrwang02

not directly related, but then again, not unrelated … how JumpTV goes will be how cycling.tv goes …

some interesting bits:

"They lost some people; last year they brought in a new CEO who was trying to get his arms around it," Mr. Wang said during an interview in Toronto. "Turmoil means you’re focused on the things that are not germane to the business – getting revenue in."
He figures JumpTV was on to a good idea, it just wasn’t doing it right. The company has spent the past two years locking up online broadcast rights to foreign TV channels from around the world to sell online. But it couldn’t build a big enough audience.

hmm… turmoil eh?

"We’re out there buying more bandwidth [for NeuLion] and they have too much," Mr. Wang says. "That doesn’t take a genius to figure out we should maybe get together on that pretty quickly."

JumpTV has “too much” bandwidth? Interesting …

So far

I logged-in and immediately started watching Stage 9 of the Tour de Suisse ON MY MAC in OSX. It’s something.

by ZoeRochelle on Jul 1, 2008 11:01 PM EDT   0 recs

JumpTV is a mess

Global sports broadcasting or telenovellas? It has no clue.

The upside (for CTV, anyway) is that CTV appears to be among the more healthy channels, in terms of cashflow. We’ll see if the new owners are smart enough to sort it.

If not, I’m only half kidding about bidding. Empires are built on other people’s mistakes.

I just watched the last 10 minutes of the TdSuisse St. 9 highlights, on

full-screen at 1800 kbps. Excellent!

They need to fix the little screen though, it’s too little. And I couldn’t get it any bigger. (That’s about as technical as my vocabulary gets.) And it still opens up a second window when I clicked on the video highlilght; I’d hoped this version wouldn’t do that.

I got logged in no problem

I’m on a Mac and checked out Tour de Suisse highlights. It opened in a floating Quicktime window. Really nice! And pages open a lot quicker and actually take you where to click! Real test will be logging for live racing. But so far so good…..

Yes - it still sucks

I logged in with the email and password they sent me in the beta site email. No dice – I was told to enter my email and my pw would be sent to me. My old pw didn’t work either. So for right now the site looks like a prettier version of it’s old, shitty self.

What happened to the on-demand content?

It looks like a lot of the on-demand content has been lost in this transition. For example, the only Giro content available is highlights from stages 1,3,5, and 18; nothing from any other stages, and no as-live replays for any stage.

I hope this is only temporary. I paid for the Giro coverage knowing I would not be watching it live, and intending to watch the as-live replays at my leisure. Now, it looks like that option is gone.

I also agree with Ruthann that the small screen is now way too small, and the new window it pops up in appararently cannot be expanded to full screen, which is very annoying.

by Tifosa on Jul 2, 2008 12:52 PM EDT   0 recs

Looks like flash video now?

I had no luck getting either the 1800 or 800 feeds to stream smoothly for the TdS highlights, which might be my service provider throttling me down, but consider that I can test my connection speed here at almost 15000 kbps, I’m not so sure that is the issue. I’m no network engineer so this might be an apples to oranges comparison, but I get the 1200 live feed just fine, at least when it’s working at all. And I noticed one very serious problem with opening two browser windows at the same time. If you take the focus off the Ctv window, for example to open PdC or probably even to open the innertube, then the video goes all black? So you cannot watch the video in one window and comment in another window at the same time? Say it ain’t so because that would be very bad…

by Jimbo... on Jul 2, 2008 1:06 PM EDT   0 recs

Yes, I thought of that last night after I signed off: if I cannot minimize the

c.tv window and share my screen with the PdC comment thread, what fun is that?

I have the premium package,

the only video on demand are highlites of the last 7 stages of TdS??
I can’t get anywhere else?
And the player is very small.
How do you navigate in this new site when logged on? I only get an account, CTV packages or auction (what the hell is that?) option.

I don’t even dare to change my password etc., just happy I was able to log in…
Looks even messier than the old one(s), I like things simple.

by Bruce Suomi on Jul 2, 2008 1:49 PM EDT   0 recs

After I got in I got what you state

so I did change my password and update the account info with out issue. Then I clicked on the ctv banner at the top and got to what I believe is the main page and selected the stage 9 highlight which I have on now at 1800 (pretty sweet, even looks good full screen). I’m hoping that the track stuff is just as sweet to view. We don’t have live threads of that so full screen I’m hoping will be great.

I have a lot to learn with where to go as that’s as far as I got. The media window that popped up has a little tiny (maybe 1/3 of the small size before) on the left and then on the right the old size window that is white with a circle saying… loading…. Is that like buffering? And what is supposed to be there?

Iv’e been able to type this while watching the highlight so I don’t think I have the problem Jimbo mentioned but could at home on the laptop. The viewing screen is way too small as I can’t see crap so I really do not like that. I like that full screen looks better but then I’m going to have to run both work and home laptops to watch and that I don’t want to do either. I’d love a small window, mid window, and full screen option but at this point I’d settle for the 1/4 of the screen view so I could see it. I so wish we could size it to what we want like with some other stuff I’ve come across.

Harold & Rebecca

I just sent the following message after trying to log on with my “new password”

I can’t log on to ctv though I have clearly paid as of 6-9-08 (see receipt below) I am directed to a strange site which tells me that I do not have a package… (see image)

I am not at all suprised that your service does not work. Writing these notes to you is tiresome.

Please fix the log on issue or refund my $44 odd dollars.

Any service update info? From anyone?

I guess the only good thing from this cycling.tv “service” change is that I’ve been forced from lurker to poster…

I have spent approximately $100 this year (purchased Giro in May and Silver package in June), and have had no communication from cycling.tv about the “beta”.

Following posts from folks here, I went over to the innertube and left a post there as well as submitting a “service ticket” yesterday and an email to cyclingtv@jumptv.com just a bit ago.

I continue to be stunned that there is no useful status information on their new home page. Has anyone submitted a service ticket or sent mail to cyclingtv@jumptv.com and heard anything back? How long did it take for you to get a response?

Thanks for any info you can share!

The help ticket is the fastest help

I went to http://www.nmnathletics.com/CreateTicket.dbml?&DB_OEM_ID=20300) ” >this link and they emailed me the password with in an hour.

Also figured out with Harold that my email account somewhere has spam killed all old cycling emails. I never get them. I’m hoping that’s a non issue now as I did get the help ticket one. They’re emails never even came in as spam. They were spit out way before ever getting to me.

Submitted ticket at that URL yesterday, no response yet

Thanks Nikki! I filled out that web form and submitted it yesterday afternoon (PDT). Good to know that you received a response within an hour. I haven’t received one yet.

I haven’t had a problem with my ISP (sbcglobal.net) id-ing cycling.tv emails as spam before. I guess it’s possible now. I had forgotten my innertube password and needed to retrieve it yesterday in order to post on that forum. I received the innertube password email without any problem.

by souvenir on Jul 3, 2008 2:53 PM EDT   0 recs

I never knew cyclingtv emails never got to me. They never even came in as spam.

Harold actually emailed me with his gmail account to let me know that his first email from cycling tv kicked back right away as rejected as spam. And that’s nothing I’ve ever marked as such. I have comcast and can only hope nothing else is like that and that now that the email addresses are different, going forward its okay. I did get the help ticket one with out problems.

Maybe submit it again. I did it yesterday morning so maybe you’re seeing a delay more from time zone/over night? I’ll drop Harold an email now too and ask him to look for ya too.

*Maybe* sbcglobal.net is bouncing cycling.tv emails back without me knowing...

I wonder if anyone else here has sbcglobal.net and is receiving email from cycling.tv right now?

After I read cycling.tv emails, I usually delete them. Just searched my inbox to see if any were left around, and I had one from the 6th of June about the start of the Dauphine Libere. I’m pretty certain I’ve had more recent emails from them as well, but deleted them after I read them.

I really doubt that bouncing email is the issue. A few other people on the innertube are now posting similar situations to mine. My guess is that they have a big old backlog of service tickets to respond to, and Harold plucked yours out of the masses and attended to it.

If they are just swamped and turnaround is going to be days, I just wish they would post that info up front of their home page.

It’s beyond humorous that the only info on their home page is the Beta in the upper left hand corner, and then the scrolling:

“Welcome to the Cycling TV beta website powered by Jump TV. Please note, we will be making further improvements to the site over the next few weeks. We hope you enjoy the new site!”

Well it would be humorous, if it wasn’t so sad.

Maybe I’ll get a gmail account and submit another ticket with both sbcglobal.net and gmail addresses if I haven’t heard anything by tomorrow. At least there are no live races where they have sole north american distribution rights going on right now. I paid for Silver on 12 June. I think my time may be better spent contacting PayPal to find out about how to get a refund.

by souvenir on Jul 3, 2008 3:32 PM EDT   0 recs

I've never gotten CTV emails

so if you had some before, then I doubt that’s the issue.
I did drop Harold an email and asked him to stop back here to see if he can help you..
I might be pretty late over there for him to check it today but I would think he’ll be stopping in between now and tomorrow morning.

using the previous settings that worked, firefox has only the tiny window, but works

I tried resetting flip-4-mac to pop open quicktime, but so far it’s not sure it wants to.

In contrast, Safari pops open two different windows (one at first looks like an audio, then opens up into a video-sized box, one looks like a video control from the start)...both of them try to load at once…and I get nice clear audio but no video.

OK, I quite firefox twice more after re-setting flip-4-mac to say “launch quicktime player” (You do that by clicking the down arrow on the right hand side of the status / loading bar and picking flip-4-mac settings). Now I have a lovely big picture, as full screen as I want it. Sound and picture are lovely.

Except for the need to re-tweak what worked before, this is very, very smooth. I will put the need to tweak down to the strange requirements of the old CTV, and not visit them upon the new CTV.

And, yes, it did let me reset my password…cautiously optimistic.

Very strange to need to know exactly what you want to watch, and what category it goes into (or when it was) to find old races, but I can get accustomed to that. Showing more than 10 at a time would be nice. (There may be an option for that.)

by JFS_PGH on Jul 3, 2008 10:31 PM EDT   0 recs

the het volk highlights load great until 1.5 Km from the end, then stop loading

It’s not a disk cache issue, because I have disk cache switched off.

Also, I can’t seem to get back to the “on demand” window that showed a lot of races as icons, horizontally. Instead, different, odd combinations of subscription level and type of race either do or do not display an “on demand” race. “Gold” and “road” pulls up LBL and all the Paris-Nice highlights, however “Gold-US” does not pull up anything (so far).

No search has worked for me yet.

Having to page through the calendar all the way from 2005, month by month, is really stupid and unwieldy; at least with firefox, there is no way to type the year in.

So the bandwidth is better, 1800 sure looks sweet…but there are still all kinds of strangeness. I’ll check some more races and see if they also crap out and stop loading a few minutes in.

Finally got an email response to my 2 July 2008 service ticket

So apparently they are 2 days or so behind. This is a response to my first contact. In my second one this morning, I provided more details, which included the info asked for below. I love that their email has a typo. Would it be so bad if they actually posted info about how long it is taking them to get to service tickets? The not knowing is the most irritating part.

Dave.49- so if they are responding first in, first out, then you may hear back tomorrow or Sunday. Hope this info is helpful to you!

Update- just had 2nd email- with 1st apology for the delay!

This 2nd email was in reply to my reply. It will be interesting to see if my second service ticket submitted a day later messes things up somehow.
Anyway, here are the relevant email excerpts:

I was able to login with their password, then change the password, logoff, then log back in with my newly created password.

Hope you hear from them soon!

glad to hear you've had success

I haven’t, yet, and still get the error message – Your account information was not found.

I did get a response to my followup email asking me to create a service ticket. However, I had included my original service ticket number in the email so I’m convinced that they didn’t read it carefully. Anyway, I’ll keep trying - sounds like there is some reason to hope!

thanks for the encouragement.
