Gerolsteiner/Holczer are so screwed

Hans-Michael Holczer, manager of Team Gerolsteiner has announced that they still haven't been able to close the deal with a new sponsor. Apparently they are still trying and if I understand correctly will postpone a final decision until September. It still means big trouble with the Tour just days away. With todays labourmarket for bikeriders I don't expect too many of Gerolsteiners key riders will be patient enough to wait for Holczer to find new money. No one should be surprised when we hear them announce new teams after the Tour, Rebellin already appears to be close to finding a new contract. No sponsor-announcement means loss of riders which in turn makes finding a new sponsor even more difficult. That looks like a downward spiral that they will have a hard time escaping.

My guess is that it hasn't been easy to find a new sponsor in Germany with the current disillusionment with cycling there. Also, Gerolsteiner doesn't have the PR-savvy of CSC , Slipstream and High Road. Their presence in the media  consist mainly of Holczer shooting his mouth off at random issues, you rarely see the positive spin and added value to sponsors that others provide. If asked I think most of us would be hard pressed to name any of his sponsors and that is poor result in a business where your main mission is to create exposure for your partners.

Milram! Will Milram please pick up the white courtesy phone?

Holczer has looked like an ass for some time now. My gut says that they just fold. Its gonna be quite a buyers market at the Tour this year as gerolsteiner, Credit Agricole, and now maybe Rabobank riders looking for new contracts. Some savvy DS’s are gonna get quite well.

I doubt anything dramatic will happen with Rabo

Probably a quiet cleanout on the management level later in the season. They are spinning the verdict like crazy and I doubt this is the final word.

You are probably right about Rabo..

even though they threatened otherwise. Still back to Gerolsteiner, if I was a rider for them with any kind of reputation I’d be looking elsewhere right now.

Oh definately!

Unless they have some reason to feel a great personal loyalty to Holczer, they’re gone.

I think

Stapleton has room on his roster for Forster and Haussler.

Yes! Thats a perfect match

And I’m sure there are plenty of anonymous, mediocre riders that never really do anything in races, who would fit in nicely on Milram

Milram and PR

Good point about PR spin. Success these days has a lot to do with getting a skeptical public excited. It’s amazing sponsors will sink $10 mil or so into a venture w/o any thought to PR.

Seems to me Milram is a problem for Gerolsteiner, at least in that there may only be room for one German superteam, and Milram is better budgeted for it. If they start plundering Columbia for Ciolek and Boasson Hagen (not German, I know), how can Gerol compete?

Maybe a merger might be an idea

Milram has the muscles but lack credible leadership. Holczer is broke but has some credibility as a man intent on running a clean team plus he has some exciting riders who seem to have a desire to keep working with him.

Exciting riders

Such as… ?

lol

Yeah that’s true.

But I have such a low opinion of Holczer that I can imagine some of the riders doing much better with better coaching. Kohl for one. Marcus Fothen for another.

Exciting

is also in the eyes of the beholder. Rebellin is 72 years old. Which is nice, but how much longer is he gonna keep going? I like Schumi OK. The rest… too many of them have been on my VDS team and done nada.

Well you make the rules

Put in more German one day races for next year (if there are any left).

Underachievers

Most of ‘em. Names but not much else at this point.

A merger could be just the ticket

And if that doesn’t happen, I wonder if Garmin will be perusing the current Gerolsteiner roster….........

Here's what the merger would look like

Milram takes the pick of the riders and some of the sponsors that Gerolsteiner had. The new team would be called “Milram”.

In return Holczer can get lost.

This video is an attempt to show the ambience at the final hour of the Nice Ironman competition. A lame attempt i'll admit, but wth? If you're ever going to finish towards the end of an ironman, i suggest Nice as the place to do it. The applause and support and general ambience at the end is really remarkable. Dj's, pom-pom girls, people dancing, shouting, dance music blasting ... Some finishers just go on through, others raise their arms or just have a huge smile, one guy did some pushups while the dj counted for him, another did a cartwheel, some ran through with their little kids holding their hands. And this all 8 hours after the winners have finished.

When i went out my door to walk over to see the last hour or so of the Ironman, the first thing i saw was a guy across the street, pushing his triathlon bike, head hanging down to his chest, walking with a pronounced. Painful. Slow. Trudge. Medal around his neck. He'd done well. Hope he felt better the next day.

Then i got to the promenade and started seeing more of the people who'd finished: one guy asleep on the pavement with his wife by his side in all the raucous noise and confusion and crowds everywhere. Then the medical tent - massages, those heat blanket thingies, oxygen, people limping aorund, Oy!

Then every now and then you see a finisher with a medal around their neck who look fresh as a daisy, like they've just had a nice walk in the park.

Then finally you get to the finish line ... and that's the video. At the end there's a fireworks display (no one timed their finish to coincide with it this year) and then apparently a few hundred people stayed all night to party on the prom next to the beach until daybreak.

I could not do an ironman even if i wanted to, but i'll be there again next year to help welcome the last finishers in.
