This guy just gets weirder by the day.....

Maybe it's me....(seriously it could be) Maybe its the pressure of the yellow jersey, but Cadel strikes me as someone who doesn't interact well with the rest of the world.

I've never been a real fan; he always has an excuse and a whine to back it up. Lately I cringe when he's interviewed and I find myself hoping he seems normal....but he just keeps getting weirder.

Check out the "i'll cut your head off" video (thanks cycleto). You can also see a rather bizarre pic of him with his dog on the cycleto site.

The video of Cadel

with his dog that somebody else posted in a different thread, was the first thing to make me really like him. Anyone that excited to see his dog gets bonus points from me.

yeah, I thought the video with the dog was cute

and I thought it was his lame attempt at a joke with the other (as did my husband).

no, he just came out of medical control

Serge the “bodyguard” wanted to move away from there before letting Evans do any interviews (hence the mentions of “medical control” that were audible).

Personally, I like Evans' sense of humour

but then again, I seem to “get” the humour of Aussie friends (or Aussie TV shows) that seem to baffle many other North Americans…

video of sporza interview today
interviewer: you going to attack?
Evans: no, no, I never attack. I read it in a magazine, I never attack.
interviewer (all serious): but I saw you attacking in the Dauphine so that’s not true!
Evans: (laughing) I knew it wasn’t true.

(FWIW, it must be hard to keep up one’s confidence when everyone asks the same sort of negative questions all the time, ie for Evans “how much time will you lose in the mountains?” or for CVV “can you keep with the leaders to the end or are you going to crack?” kind of thing).

I’m a dog and a cat person, having grown up with both. And if you can get a cat with the personality of a dog, well it’s just totally off the hook. They’re worth their weight in gold.

What does he/she retrieve?

One of our cats would only chase and bring back balls of wadded up paper. Everything else should would merely smack around until losing interest.

The flip side would be the worst – imagine having a dog that was totally aloof and regarded your presence as more of a hinderance than a plus. I’m not sure I could keep a dog like that.

Not sure on Gavia's kitty

but Wieser will chase after and bring back little mice thingys, paper, balls of yarn (as long as there are strings), and the best – the dogs rope thing. That’s quite the site as it’s like 1/3 his size.

fave is a mouse

loves to play fetch with his favorite mouse. will also retrieve paper balls. and assorted toys of choice. of course, since he is not a dog, only he can decide when fetch will occur and what will be fetched.

Same here.

Cat – Wieser – is more like a dog than some dogs. Dude plays fetch, sits outside with me, begs for treats just like the girls, and hangs tough letting them know who’s really boss. Great stuff when you find one.

Some of the questions the press ask over and over again are inane

and I would get testy and tired of answering them too. He has a history of calling them on their idiocy in a comical way. I like him.

“Some of the questions the press ask over and over again are inane”. After the rest day’s “are you going to attack?” interview by the sporza guy, I actually can’t blame Evans for really wanting to avoid sporza…

by guidemd on Jul 22, 2008 6:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

sure..

but these sorts of questions pretty much go with the territory. there’s only so many things you can ask a bike racer after a stage. headbutting the camera? not the best way to handle the situation, in my view. a tad childish, and unprofessional. he’s getting paid a boatload of money to pedal his bike fast and smile and answer stupid questions from the press. that’s what pro bike racing is.

by gavia on Jul 22, 2008 7:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

didn't say I can't blame him for headbutting ;-)

If you step on my dog, I’ll….

So what would you do?

by Tiki on Jul 22, 2008 7:07 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Agree, Cadel handled it wrong

If you are a journalist, at some point you just have to get it. Clearly he wasn’t in the mood, so why bother him directly after a hard ass day in the saddle? Wait until he gets cleaned up and able to get some food and something to drink first. After that, you might get an interview. But Cadel is the type that would give you a punch in the mouth for bothering him too much. Other times, he’s as friendly as they come. If you’re a journalist, it’s your job to get the interview, etc. but as some point, as I said above, you just have to get it.

If I just had one more gear, I...

by gavia on Jul 22, 2008 10:50 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

True but

There’s a point when you need to learn to read when a punch is coming for your teeth and back off. That’s not a hard read. Today was a camera, tomorrow could be somebody’s grill. May not be right, but that’s human nature.

If I just had one more gear, I...

by SpunOut on Jul 22, 2008 11:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

then...

The journo gets hit in the face, and Evans gets a hefty fine, if not expelled from the race for being an ass. And rightly so. No excuse for that kind of behavior from a professional. None.

by gavia on Jul 22, 2008 11:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Evans is acting like a spoiled brat

if he doesn’t want to answer questions he should just keep on riding and let his bodyguard (yeah he has one) handle the scrum. It’s completely unprofessional and stupid to headbutt and slap away microphones and other nonsense like that.

If another rider, such as Pereiro had done the same thing he would have been crucified by everyone.

by lyne on Jul 22, 2008 11:23 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Immature though it may be

It comes down to respect. If I am exhausted, leave me alone until I get myself together. If I have an injured shoulder after crashing my brains out, don’t tap that shoulder with a microphone (for which he showed more restraint than most men would at that point). Don’t stick a camera directly in my path when I have just busted my ass in the alps and am trying to get cleaned up and something to drink to help alleviate cramps from a day of busting my ass at altitude. The media needs to give respect to get it, it’s that simple. Far too often, we see that the media goes overboard and isn’t kept in check. We obviously think differently. Maybe it’s because I’m a guy or it’s an age thing, I don’t know or really care. But I can’t say I would not do the same if I were in his place. Nobody can because they are not in his place.

If I just had one more gear, I...

agreed

Yesterday, after Cunego had another shit day in what has been three weeks of shit days, di Stefano wanted an interview. Cunego, so trashed from racing, he could barely speak, stood there and tried to answer the questions. He could barely breathe. Pretty much all that came out was duro, duro, duro. It was hard, he said, over and over. This, after making the early break, and getting dropped from the winning move on the final climb. Not at all a good day at the office. Little dude’s spent three weeks crashing, getting dropped, and going to doping control. But he still pulled himself together and did an interview. That’s pro.

by gavia on Jul 23, 2008 6:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree the media can be a bit more respectful

but he needs to be a bit more professional. It sucks to have the media swarm them, I’m sure but I’m sorry, they get paid to ride and if for no other reason, he should be respecting his team and sponsors better than that. If he needs a minute to breath and such, he can have his bodyguard get him that space. I would not want that attention or swarm but that’s not part of my job either. It is part of his. He needs to be more respectful even if you want to see the media as such too.

huh

I was feeling a little bit like defending him (not the headbutting, but him overall), but there’s that second whack (first one is borderline).

Pressure’s just too much, I guess. Still makes me think “poor guy.”

by Sui Juris on Jul 23, 2008 6:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree. His behavior is not appropriate. He needs help dealing.

I did post on another thread about his crash and head injury. He usually avoids the press and calls them on their stupid questions but he is over the top this Tour. I wonder if his head injury may be the culprit. Concussions are pretty scary and can change a person’s personality. My daughter had one a few months ago from a fall and she was very out of character for a couple weeks after and hers wasn’t bad enough to crack a helmet.

I came across this article

with some comments from David Millar on the media.
Thought it might be worth a read with this thread.
It’s short and nothing big but talks about how Garmin is more open and how being open has helped.
