Post-Race Show! Stage 16: Cuneo-Jausiers

Here are today's stage results and the new general classification.

Star-divide

Some stuff happened today at the Tour. Two mountains of unusual size were climbed. The highest road in Europe was ridden. Some of the kids went faster than the other kids. Suffering was had. Time was lost. Somebody won.

Classifications. Cyril Dessel of AG2R takes today his first ever Tour de France stage. The yellow (Schleck), spotted (Kohl), and green (Freire) jerseys all remain unchanged today. In the general, Christian Vandevelde of Team Garmin lost time, falling to sixth overall at 3.15, while Denis Menchov of Raboank lost 30 seconds and currently sits 5th at 1.15. The top four in the general remains unchanged. Andy Schleck of CSC-Saxo Bank takes over the lead in the white jersey classification by 6 seconds over Vincenzo Nibali of Team Liquigas. Roman Kreuziger holds 3rd at 50 seconds, while Maxim Monfort, who gained time on today's climbing stage, remains 4th at 2.18.

Tomorrow? The classic Galibier-Alpe D'Huez Combo!

Lotto tactics – WTF?

Is there much point in having Popovich either off the back on any climb up til now, or off the front all day?

How ‘bout a day actually with Evans when he gets bashed by CSC on the climbs?

Ok... please explain *Lotto...

I’m totally baffled… through a guy in the break… and leave him there… don’t let him drop back to assist your GC contender… bring a crew of essentially useless guys as gregarios to… I don’t know… pad out the Autobus… and leave your sprinter to twist in the wind without even one guy for support.

On that point...

... if ever there was a movie worth purchasing all available copies of… it’s Big Trouble in Little China (well, that and all Evil Dead movies too). John Carpenter et. al. deserve your hard earned money if anyone does.

I remember the commentary track from the Laserdisc waaaay back when and it wasn’t all that in depth on the movie… it was essentially John Carpenter and Kurt Russell sitting around drinking beer and talking about how both of their ex wives were in Escape from New York.

Huh? Popo in break is good

Popo in break is good, just like KAA and Jens, better in front then off the back. I think they thought the break would get caught. Once over the top it didn’t matter since it was downhill all the way.

by Markk on Jul 22, 2008 11:17 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

except . . .

that KAA and Jens! dropped back to help shred . . .

Popo must have taken out his earpiece when the instruction came, or he’s still having trouble with Flemish . . ..

by R Mc on Jul 22, 2008 11:20 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

And how was Popo dropping back going to help?

He was only a couple minutes ahead. CSC is pushing. Lotto is reacting. If there a break with Schleck he drops back, otherwise he drops back, gets dropped, and then where are you?

by Markk on Jul 22, 2008 11:22 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

By that time, the situation was pointless to debate.

Strategy and general team planning is supposed to be done before the stage begins.
I would have had Cioni, or someone else, up in the break and Popo beside Cadel, but the DS for Lotto seems to think Popo is better used in this manner.
I happen to think he is a jackass for it, but I’m not in the car and he is.
So what do I know?

by Ryan_Liles on Jul 22, 2008 11:27 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

concession by the ds

Watching the previous moutain stages, I don’t think Popovych could have stayed in that group of favorites anyway. Certainly, he’s been dropped early and often enough in this Tour. Given that, it made sense to send him up the road as insurance, in the event that Cadel was gapped, he could come back to help. Otherwise, he plays for the stage. The way the stage went today, there was no reason for him to come back to the favorites group, since he was hardly going to contribute to CSC’s pace-making. It’d have been a decent strategy if Popovych had won the stage, as it was, it wasn’t bad, just insurance.

by gavia on Jul 22, 2008 11:32 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Pointless

Other than giving Popo a chance to do something for himself. I think they’ve ceded the team tactics to CSC from now on.

post-race

nibali, said he felt bad on the climb and tried to get back on the descent

cunego said, it was a hard day, he was happy to make it to the finale with the favorites. i tried to get back some time but it was hard. i must thank my team mates who worked for me and helped me. tomorrow the crescendo on the alpe d’huez.

cunego sounded trashed.

by gavia on Jul 22, 2008 11:16 AM EDT   0 recs

And then there was 5

So now there are only 5 within three minutes

1 Fränk Schleck (Lux) CSC-Saxo Bank
2 Bernhard Kohl (Aut) Gerolsteiner 0.07
3 Cadel Evans (Aus) Silence-Lotto 0.08
4 Carlos Sastre (Spa) CSC-Saxo Bank 0.49
5 Denis Menchov (Rus) Rabobank 1.13

After tomorrow it will be down to whomever is under 2 minutes IMHO.

6 Christian Vande Velde (USA) Garmin Chipotle – H30 3.15

Unfortunately , he’s just out of it now.

If CVV can keep it like that after tomorrow

he can make up some spots on Saturday. Podium is still realistic.

by Drew... on Jul 22, 2008 11:23 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I pretty much stated that in the live thread.

The win would take something horrific by others but the podium itself is not out of reach.
Positive email already sent off. It’s all what he keeps believing in his head.

He was okay needing to drop off the leaders but I really thought he’d be with in a minute. Hearing the -2.35 was not right. I just hope the crash didn’t cause any injury. He would’ve been in great shape if that hadn’t happened. Now it’s going to take some serious determination to make it happen. When it does – breathtakingly sweet. (When, not if – must keep all vibes positive.)

by nikki on Jul 22, 2008 11:49 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I'd agree the podium is stil possible

But this is a weird year with everything so tight time wise this late in the race. He’ll need to pick up at least 30 seconds tomorrow and more like a minute to have a shot at the podium as he has to make up 3:07 to get up to 3rd.

If he just hangs with the group tomorrow than i I see him overtaking Sastre i\on Stage 20 but it will be tough to get back 3 minutes on the top 3 in the TT. The one exception is Kohl. But he has to pick up 2 minutes on Menchov between tomorrow and Saturday to get past him too. I think 5th is a realistic outcome if CVV can hold with the group tomorrow. A great tour by most standards for a riders first time as leader at the Tour.
