Beautiful indeed
for conversations sake: Evans took 2:31 from Sastre in the final ITT last year. Couldn’t ask for better gaps for tension.
Brooklyn Chewing Gum: Vlaanderens Mooiste
Andy Schleck is a demon
That was fantastic! I wonder what he could have done if he wasn’t constantly looking back to pull people up with him. He didn’t look strained for a second.
Boy
did I pick the wrong weekend to go camping again. Still, I’ve determined that we’ll be 9 miles from the nearest wifi.

What?...
I threaten to leave the last weekend of the Giro and everyone threatens me with shunning… you… you’re camping? Planned?
Ricco stole my marbles.
About 20 people
made reservations in January. I’m just a victim.

Grande Alpe!
It lived up to the hype this time! Good to see Sastre attacking right away. Good to see the tactics.
Sastre's attack
was one of the great ones. Right from the bottom the l’Alpe, a stage win, and yellow! Fantastic.
CSC tactics
After all the head-scratching, we can see that they knew what they were doing. The Alpe does have the potential for gaps over 2’, and I’d guess that’s about all Sastre or anyone else was capable of. To Evans’ credit, he did what he could to limit losses. I wonder if he wasted some matches chasing little accelerations, but otherwise there wasn’t much he could do.

i realized a dream by taking the yellow jersey
it was complicated attacking a bit earlier, we tried earlier but we couldn’t go. the attack wasn’t planned, I really attacked for the stage win, we wanted this stage win on the Alp in the team.
the most important is to keep the yellow jersey in the team.
he also said that andy & frank did amazing work and that he closed the deal
Nobody in the top 7 cracked
All the guys at the top stayed there. Tough guys. An amazing group this year. Actually include Valverde there too.
And THAT My friends is teamwork...
... that’s entirely what Cadel didn’t have. Sacrifice of the Year award goes to Frank Schleck and if Carlos doesn’t pay his bar tabs for the next 25 years, that will be a slap in the face. Absolutely… fantastic… fantastic racing…
That was the sort of attack I was waiting for in the Giro but never saw… seeing someone take the race by the pecans and own it. If Evans wins via the ITT, that will be a “Meh” win (as far as Meh wins can exist in something this grueling).
If Sastre holds on… this was just the stuff of legends we just watched boys and girls.
Ricco stole my marbles.
my thoughts exactly
a TT win is still a win, but it’s not an epic win.
I hope Carlos can hang on.
I really want to agree with you
But I’m remembering the final ITT in 1989. ITT can be plenty exciting.
Brooklyn Chewing Gum: Vlaanderens Mooiste
I don't want anyone to think that I'm taking away ...
... anything at all from Cadel. If he wins it, it’s through the ITT and I can well see it being a matter of seconds of having to sprint to the finish line for Carlos which would be plenty exciting. But if Carlos wins… no one is going to talk about his amazing time trial.
Ricco stole my marbles.
Oh I agree
I’ve always been kind of meh on both Cadel and Carlos, but in my book an epic attack in the mountains supported by smart and ballsy team-work trumps good defensive riding and strong ITTs.
Brooklyn Chewing Gum: Vlaanderens Mooiste
Perhaps
But after the 2005 Giro I came away in love with DiLuca, Simoni, and Rujano and not so much with Savoldelli. I know folks will chide me for this, but sometimes winning isn’t everything.
Or it may just be that I favor the hare over the tortoise.
Brooklyn Chewing Gum: Vlaanderens Mooiste
Maybe
But there is nothing meh about winning the Tour. Everyone wins the way they can win it. Indurain wasn’t exciting, but you know what, he still won five Tours and that’s what he’ll be remembered for. I get what you’re saying about winning, but I am not one of those people. If, for example, I plan on doing a time trial, I don’t do it because “it would be fun”, I do it because I want to test myself. That is fun to me. The Tour/Giro/Vuelta is all about winning or coming as close to winning as is possible for each person, otherwise they wouldn’t be doing it. Now a Sunday group ride is all about fun and not about winning at all.
If I just had one more gear, I...
But that's exactly what you are doing
A win of the Tour in the ITT by a man with no team would not be a “meh” win. WTF?! Dude, get a bike.
If I just had one more gear, I...
All I'm saying is that Ted Williams is Ted Williams...
... but the Babe… is the Babe.
Ricco stole my marbles.
Clearly Evans has been the strongest
No team and still withing killing range, you cannot dispute that. He has been the strongest and NOTHING can be taken away from you. Winning is the point, not showmanship. Fans are great, but they don’t have to suffer like a dog day after day. So if Carlos doesn’t win the Tour, it will just show that the best team in the world couldn’t make him a winner.
If I just had one more gear, I...
agree.
I’ve always liked Cadel, until this Tour. He has behaved like a spoiled child, his tantrums have been painfull to watch. But that doesn’t mean he isn’t a worthy winner, of course he is(that is if he wins of course).
by Bruce Suomi on Jul 23, 2008 12:54 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, I agree about his behavior
I argued this is another forum already. The point is, NOBODY here can imagine the stress that has been on his shoulders. He’s a quiet, humble guy that doesn’t like all the attention. I can’t fault him for that. My problem is with the media. But yeah, he could stand to take some lessons in dealing with the press scum, I mean scrum.
If I just had one more gear, I...

Sastre, Evans, Kohl for the podium. but not ncessarily in that order

You think?
I think its a really interesting group of performances that built that one. For me its the ride not the rider that makes a podium good or bad.
Kohl – returns to potential after tough stretch – rides well and consistently. Great attacks in the 2nd week
Evans -consummate grinder and if he wins today’s ride is a show of strength under pressure.
Sastre – great guy – what a ride to finally rrealize his great potential as a climber
This is all without seeing what happens on Saturday

If Sastre hangs on, it will be one of the great wins of all time. A veteran rider, consistent performer finally convinces the boss to have the team ride for him and delivers the goods.
Same for Evans, he’s worked and worked and worked to get a shot at yellow.
I’m a fan of Carlos, so I’ll be bummed if he loses the yellow jersey in a TT, but that’s bike racing.
kohl?
after today, i’ll be surprised if he can hang onto a top five in the crono. Menchov at 2.39 isn’t out of the podium race by any means. that’s a very long crono, and deep in the third week of the tour, you really can’t predict the outcome even now.
A couple days to recover and I think it will be close for Menchov
Plus your discounting the Rabbobank ability to find a way to blow a placement on the tour. So i say Kohl on the podium by 10 seconds over Menchov. Of course if you look at my picks this year, I’m probably wrong.
Just spinning the pedals in the hills of Western Maryland
So who is going to set splits for Sastre on CSC?
Off the top of my head, I don’t see a good matching rider for Sastre. Of course he’ll be riding off Evans, but he sure won’t be using Spartacus.
Just spinning the pedals in the hills of Western Maryland
anyone of the earlier guys can give them an idea
carlos will do his own ride anyway, but certo, riis can do the math to approximate what sastre should hold given the conditions. sastre rides by feel more than numbers, though, so he’ll just ride.
Jens!

I like Carlos
but if he tries to use Jens! splits, he’s dead before the 2nd check :-) Jens! has been a team player this entire tour -no way he doesn’t check that spring he’s got coiled up on Saturday!
"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."
If he doesn't get in tomorrow's
I’d think Friday could be an all out battle to get in one. He lives for that so much and I’d think he’d get a little room now. Although Riis might keep him on the leash until Saturday.

not sure about that, actually. i think frankie on a good day beats kohl. but really, third week cronos are really hard to call.
i need a cigarette and a drink
but since I don’t smoke, and it’s before 10am, I’ll settle for a shower and going to work
andy schleck
again I felt super good today. I wanted to win the stage but I’m really happy for Carlos. He’s been working for this for years and he’s the only one that could have climbed like that.
when asked about if it was difficult staying in the group
he smiled, and said
it wasn’t that easy. frank & i tried a few times but there were a lot of riders to watch. we tried and when we saw it didn’t work we stayed in the group. I tried to sprint for second….
that one move...
where the two schlecks went with valverde. that was dreamy. too good to last, though.
they played it well, and some of those digs they put in worked well to delay the chase. there’s more than one way to block.
Got a business call right as the stage ended! :/
But just caught Carlos come in out of the side of my eye! Carlos rules!!!!!! And super riding by Andy, Frank and CVV too!
Hard today...
After watching Andy these past two stages, I so wish the kid would’ve been hydrated the day he lost all those minutes. He still would’ve done his thing to bury himself for the team but I think he has way more than Carlos or Frank. Had he not lost those minutes (yes I know I am doing the coulda, woulda, shoulda thing and this is bike racing but) he, I think would be THE man that everyone else would need to watch. I think he would be the top dog. But, I am happy to watch him continue growing and kicking ass for years to come. He’s impressive and I love watching him. He makes it easy at times which should make the future one hell of a fun time!!!
And… great ride by C today! That crash sucked yesterday but there is some smiles (small) that he was going after it that hard to get back on. With out the crash, he’d be right there. Hang tough C and ride your heart out on Saturday!!!

to Carlos: “Enjoy some champagne tonight.” What?! Somehow I think CSC aren’t that stupid. These are people (racers generally) who won’t shave their legs too close to a race because the growing hair might cost them energy. I think they can hang on a few more days before popping any corks.

Whoever wins - it's been an epic battle (Cadel or Carlos or whoever) - No MEH! at all
Brilliant brave riding – i think Cadel’s response to grind himself into the dust to limit his losses to Carlos was as brave and exciting as Carlos’ own attack.
That to me is what the TdF & any 3 weeker is about – the tactics of suffering taken to extreme.
The only way Cadel can win is doing it his way, the same for Carlos! Whoever wins, i’ll be toasting for the thrill they’ve given me so far.
Brilliant racing, brilliant tactics, brilliant riders, brilliant posts!!

Not for riders like Sastre

Playing devils advocate -
CVV is far enough down that they could give him a minute and not care too much.Only person that would impact would be Menchov.
Just spinning the pedals in the hills of Western Maryland
No they couldn't give Vandevelde a minute
If he’s only just over 3 minutes behind Schleck, Kohl, and Evans and you give him a minute, he could feasibly take back 2 min over 50+K on Kohl or Schleck. That would be a BAD move to allow him to get away.
If I just had one more gear, I...
Evans vs Sastre in ITTs
Recent ITTs, Sastre relative to Evans.
TDF 2007 Albi (54km) +2.47, Angouleme (55.5km) +2.33
Vuelta 2007 (52km) +1.43, (20km) +0.22
Dauphine 2008 (31km) +3.32
TDF 2008 (29.5) +1.16
Well done by Sastre and CSC today – brilliant tactics. Kudos to Evans for grinding it through.
Saturday will be epic!
Caveat
Evans wasn’t on form in the Vuelta last year, and Sastre wasn’t on form in Dauphine this year.
The great Redemption
Bjarne Riis interviewed on Fr2:
You have lead a great operation on the Alp and you surely planned it?
I am very proud, that’s for sure. Content. This team is formidable. We all worked to do this today. We started in the Pyrenees. We worked very hard yesterday for today. We succeeded. It’s truly formidable.
To do the sums, there’s on GC 1.34 seconds ahead of Evans for Carlos Sastre, and on Saturday afternoon there’s a 53k TT. That will be very difficult for Carlos Sastre.
Yes, I was thinking of that today. I think that what we have done today is everything that was possible. We did the best possible, if that’s not enough then so be it. It’s like that, that’s the race. We have done all we could. If we don’t win, well that’s the way it goes, we are satisfied even so.
Does today make you happy?
This team is formidable. The way we worked together, it’s magnifique. I don’t know if we will win but we have won.
Sounds like a happy man, but not the most confident
We’ll see come Sunday I guess.

Sastre
I can’t forget the image of Sastre with that stupid pacifier in his mouth when he won a stage last year or whenever. It’s what comes to my mind every time his name comes up so I have a hard time rooting for him. Gotta get over that.
wished they had shown more than 1 seconds of sastre getting the yellow jersey
but versus chose to put up all the standings instead
yeah I was annoyed by that
I wanted to, ya know, see the face of a man achieve his dream after a lifetime of work.
He didn't kiss the lion
if that’s what worries you.
but wasn't the pacifier a tribute to his wife and newborn baby?
Pro cyclists are gone from their loved ones for so many “life milestones” like births, deaths, etc. For him to make it known to the world (with the pacifier) how important his family is, he is a man who deserves respect.
(Being an ex military spouse whose husband was gone for the birth of our first child, I understand how much that gesture meant to his wife.)
Nice Stats on ITTs!! :-)

End of the Tour for Jimmy Casper
The only rider to finish Hors Delai:
Even with all the suffering and the kilometers spent alone between Embrun and Ale d’Huez, Casper could not reach the finish before the time limit, crossing the line with more than 4 minutes behind the limit. Sitting on the ground, leaning on the finish line barriers, he only had tears to show his distress.
Time cuts suck (but I understand why they're there)
It was sad to see Maggy try so hard to get in before the cut and this picture of Casper is just as sad.
I feel for these guys trying with everything they got to get to the line.

much more relaxed today
Evans talking to French TV (in French so I didn’t understand all of it, but seemed to be the same things in all the English reports I think) or here ... I’d almost say he’s relieved that the mountains are over and now it’s just down to the TT (that or the *Lotto PR guy gave him a good talking to about “how to interact with the media).
Eurosport's Blazing Saddles blog
has a funny column on “what they said vs. what they meant” – scroll down to the middle of the column.
Their said/meant for Riis:
Bjarne Riis: “We will do everything we can and we will see.”
Meant: “Our best chance for success now is a Jens Voigt break-away tomorrow.”
Andy's from that article is pretty good too...
Andy Schleck: “Today I felt very strong again. With Frank we tried to win the stage but well done to Carlos. I am very happy for him. Nobody could have matched him for speed on that final climb. But now’s not the time to be complacent. There are lots of dangerous rivals left on the general classification.”Meant: “I could have matched Carlos today had I been given the chance. Yet again I was the strongest but my team is too complacent. By the end of the race, our most dangerous rivals will be above us in the GC.”
"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."
From Bjarnes blog
The plan was to attack already on the Croix de Fer but ONLY if they had managed to put a guy in the breakaway. They tried with Jens! but the others wouldn’t allow it since they could connect the dots and see what was in store then. Without a man waiting to help bridge to the Alpe an early attack was pointless So they went with softening up the field for the long attack on the Alpe . All according to Bjarne.
