Alpe d'Huez and meeting Jens!...the photographic evidence
Here are some little piccies of my most exciting trip to the Tour. I had the best time and would recommend the Alpe d'Huez experience to EVERYONE. It has to be done if at all possible, but a word of warning, if you camp, take a very large fleece and a very woolly hat......
Right, well, the trip started not with Le Tour but with a spot of Paris-Roubaix geekery. I mean, the forest of Arenberg is only just off the motorway so why not take a trip? Amazing how a load of old cobbles have the power to make me so excited!
Here is the view from our tent on the Alpe. Glorious weather, noisy Basques to the right, noisy Norwegians to the front and to the left a Dutchman who slept OUTSIDE!!
Here we have a massive crowd in front of the big screen watching John Lee Augustyn fall off the road (amongst other things). It was at this point that I got my embarrassing sunburn...note to self: never leave the suncream in the tent again!
Alpe d'Huez on the morning of the stage. Madness. Quite a contrast from the quiet starry night a few hours earlier when, for fear of contracting frostbite, I retired to the car to sleep, just round the corner from here. I woke up to find someone hammering the flamme rouge into the ground right by my head.
View of Huez from near the top. We walked down there for the stage but, being lazy, got the cable car back up.
Quite seriously, beautiful:
Here is the Basque teevee van. These lovely people gave us way more 'cider' from Tolosa than was good for us (man it was strong!) and also cooked us a full meal! The cider had gone by this point to be replaced by beer brought by an oldish German gentleman. The teevee worked for most of the afternoon but we did eventually have to resort to hitting it.....good times!
And then came the race! Here are Arvesen and Tony:
Somebody with Oscarito (Barredo??):
A medium sized group:
And finally....the autobus, starring Pippo, Millar, O'Grady, Quinziato and friends:
Then came the craziness of the evening. Bascially, I had a friend staying in the CSC and Leakygas team hotel (!) and brazenly walked in past the security lady saying that I was meeting a friend for a drink (which happened to be true actually. Said drink took place in an absolutely rammed bar where I almost chucked my wine all over Bjarne Riis). And then, who should appear but......JENS! Youn will also notice the cameo appearance in this piccie of Big Schleck.
(ok, totally appalling picture of me, but in the circumstances, it simply MUST be posted here!)
And then there was The Hair himself, who was I must say very charming indeed:
Schlecklet in profile. He didn't stop for long, declaring he needed a shower, which in the circumstances would seem to be a reasonable requirement:
And look at this! They actually POSED for me. Can things get any better?
Unfortunately I missed Sastre but I did capture his winning bike:
After packing up the tent, we headed down to Bourg d'Oisans for stage 18. It was VERY hot. Never have I been so keen to get my hands on one of those extremely unflattering hats given out by the men on roller blades! A general view:
Here's a contemplative Sorensen:
General peleton shot:
Sastre and friends!

yay!
Those are super cool photos. What a beautiful spot of planet.
And the two-legged scenery is really quite fabulous.
Where do I sign up? Maybe we could find a way to move Cali closer to France?
That would seem to be a plan...
Would there be room for it in the English Channel I wonder? On the two legged scenery, agreed, but I just can’t imagine what might have happened had Benna been there….I suppose if I’d fainted at his feet he would have had to pick me up again. Now that’s a nice thought!
Can I come?
Those are awesome! It sounds like you had a great time and also like all stories I’ve been told about the guys from CSC are reaffirmed. I’ve heard they will get quite funny for the camera. They likes themselves some good giggles…. must be why I like them so much!
Great stuff!!!

Very cool!!

If there's anyone who doesn't want to come next year
after seeing your photos, they’re at the wrong website!
Thanks for sharing your story and pictures with us.
Wunderbar!
and Danke schoen.
Oh, wait. The Alpe is in France. And I speak no German.
I mean Magnifique! and Merci mille fois, Albertina.
PS What language
were your interactions conducted in? With Pippo in particular? Does he speak English?
Best picture I’ve ever seen of him.
English all round.
I’m not sure how good Pippo’s English really is but he seemed to understand me when I squeaked ‘please please please can I have a photo!!!!!’ and he thanked me most politely when I wished him luck etc. His whole demeanour was very very cool and so wonderfully Italian ;-)
PPS The CSC boys
look like a litter of puppies sprawled out together on the sofa. All tuckered out from their day of romping and playing.
Jens! looks like a total... freakin'... NERD! I love it!!!!!
And please tell me that you will never wash your right shoulder again… I mean… that’s like getting touched by the Pope and Grand Inquisitor of cycling all at the same time! I’m am massively jealous! And you were in the same room with Tony!!!! Holy crap!
The only thing missing is Paolo Bettini… if he’d been there, I’D have fainted.
and yes… you know how a crowd of 25 new best friends that will be accompanying you to France next year.
Bueno Carlos!!!!!
Valverde is, apparently, like some obscene form of Bud Light...
Smells good… Tastes Salty.
Bueno Carlos!!!!!
I just spit out my water. Thanks!
I so need to leave work soon. Way too late and only 2nd day back.
"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."
Forget the tent
Clearly separate hotels is the way to go. Maximise the opportunities for getting past the security guards, and all that. Intelligent stalkering.
That's a really good point.
We each take a room so we can all “meet” for a drinks as teams show up. Great plan!
"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."
With earpieces to keep it not so obvious!
And garmin gps units marking each hotel…
"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."
I think he just challenged us...
Does he not know who you and Gavia are?
"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."
If I make it over, I can help out for a few days. :-)
"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."
Ok, well, I suppose I'll have to learn to share ;-)
Talking of Benna, I understand he’s riding the Herentals Criterium today…..good sign, and there MIGHT just be photos….
"know how a crowd"???!??!??!
where the hell did that come from… that should read… “you know how”
Bueno Carlos!!!!!
WTF??????
“you now have a crowd”
no “drinking at work again” comments from the peanut gallery thankyouverymuch.
Bueno Carlos!!!!!
Shaken... but unstirred...
... and neither my Tequila nor my electronics bins fell off their respective shelves, so all is well.
Bueno Carlos!!!!!
Yeah. :-)
Does this mean though that we will still need to wait longer for awesome updates on a particular site?
"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."
It took me over a 1/2 hour and I love the pics!!!
I may need to visit again to look some more. I’m sucker for that stuff.
Great pics and once again – thank you for sharing them!
"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."
I'm afraid the shoulder has been washed but the T shirt has not.
Perhaps I should put it in a frame so it can form the centrepiece of a Jens! shrine?
Albertina - Classic Fan Post!!!
Awesome experience!
Thanks for posting
both your pics and your story. You look adorable in the photos, and the scenery is gorgeous. Glad that all the riders were so friendly.
thanks for sharing
good memories of the Pic Blanc hotel last year on the rest day, and of last year’s Tour in general … I didn’t have all you people to share pics with then, how cool is it to have such a neat community of like-minded people to share with? (I think most of my friends and family were thinking “oh, it’s another bike race picture, how unexciting” when we shared our pics with them last year…)
Glad you had a great time!
You know... you can share them with us now.
I highly doubt any of us would complain that they are dated a year earlier. Just a nudge… :-)
"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."
i'll try to post a few
when I get a chance … gee it’s hard getting back to work this week after 2 weeks off …
Albertina, I apologize for taking liberties with your picture...
... but I was at home… with photoshop… in a moment of weakness…

Bueno Carlos!!!!!
Oh, I cannot wait until she sees this!
Fantastic post, thanks for posting your adventure. How exciting!
That's awesome!
I would almost think you’d had inserted yourself in place of albertina but maybe that’s a stretch. (Who are we kidding? You would totally bear that mans offspring!)
"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."
Lovely stuff
Beat that Bettini. And when was the last time you saw a photo of Jens! with his arm round Graham Watson, then.
Albertina
Too bad Benatti was not there there. Had you had gotten his picture, it would have been a perfect trifecta!
Oh I agree!
Had he appeared in front of me I may just have fallen flat on my back with the excitement of it all! I will get his picture one day…..
That giant
cheesy grin by Jens! makes me like him even more. What a great character.
Preliminary plans are in the works for one Clydesdale and his dutch freind to make a portion of the Tour next year. Totally torn between a Mountain stage and seeing the finish in Paris.
"...The mind has to rule the body and tell the body, shut up and do what I tell you to do..." Jens!
My brother's friend (who lives in Paris) has offered up
a visit with her in the lovely month of July….
This trip is not for certain (unlike like TOC) but I’d love to chat with some of you going or have been with tidbits of planning advice.
"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."
I am in the same boat
I’ve never been there before and am looking for pointers. I will be there for a couple of days before we move north toward Holland and Amsterdam.
"...The mind has to rule the body and tell the body, shut up and do what I tell you to do..." Jens!
Tour tips
I’ve been to the Tour three times - 2002, 2003, 2004 - and for the first two trips, I was the one who did the planning and made all the arrangements (hotels, car rental, maps, etc.). I’ve been to the Alps, the Pyrenees, and the finish in Paris. So, Clydesdale, Nikki, or anyone else who wants to chat about planning a trip to the Tour, feel free to email me. My email address is in my profile.
Obviously, several others here have also been to the Tour, so you might want to do a fan post to have a general discussion on Tour trip planning.

Thanks for the offer
I am waiting for next years schedule to come out before I start trying to hammer out things, also need to factor in ToC now.
"...The mind has to rule the body and tell the body, shut up and do what I tell you to do..." Jens!
Same here.
I planned on a much more serious look at plans later in the fall. A Tour visit has been a long time goal (to see C in the Tour – stop laughing!) and I just haven’t been able to find friends willing to devote vaca time to the race thus plans have consistenly fizzled.
TOC is too sweet a deal to pass up meeting many of you so that is already in the plans for sure.
"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."
Have you been to the cobbled classics?
I am going over for Flanders, Ghent and Paris Roubaix and need help! I’ve got my plane tickets already, but that’s it.
Demoncats might be a solid resource for classics...
"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."
Bwaaahahahahaaahahahahaaa!!!!
PopUp: Ok DemonCats… we’re going to Paris Roubaix right?
DemonCats: Yeah… and I SWEAR Roubaix is what the dutch call “Amsterdam”
Bueno Carlos!!!!!
I'm in
As a trip to Amsterdam is already slated between on Monday and tuesday (between Flanders and GW).
Crashdan... are you still leaning towards Germany?
Could be yet another party at Flanders…
"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."
What if he had a lifeforce girl with him?
I’m not sure that will ever get old or wouldn’t ever work for you. :-)
"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."
Unfortunately, no
I’d love to go to the cobbled clasics one of these years. Unfortuately, I can only afford one trip per year, and I’ve got this Giro d’Italia monkey on my back.
I can’t wait to hear about your trip!

went to Flanders, GW and Paris-Roubaix in 2005
ask away. I didn’t really interact with the riders as i preferred to see the race ;) (and eat chocolates, try out the beers, travel around, go to museums, and just enjoy …)
I have way too many questions!
Can you shoot me an email (on my profile) with an email address I can contact you at?

My opinion
I have watched in Paris once and up the mountains many times.
The mountains rock. Preferable the last mountain on a long stage.

great photos!
there’s a certain element of courage watching the Tour on the Alpe
(but it seems it was more than worth the effort)
