Cooke looks way happy
They all look very nice. None of them look like cold, calculating, contract killers. But that’s basically what they are.
I hate vos!
Hmm maybe little hard but attack girl. You got the talent.. Cooke did it very nice btw but why did the Oostenrijker pul the breakaway? She finished fourth..
Some say the best things in life, are one the inside.
eh, maybe some inexperience
She’s hasn’t been doing this road thing that long. It’s not easy for someone with a deadly sprint to become a race-maker. Give her time…
Vos… well she must have had a bad day because the rear half of the peloton is not the place to be on the climbs. Didn’t see her anywhere near the front until the final 5 km when she was in the desperate chasing group—too late by then, she’s missed the boat already – and later “winning” the sprint for the bunch.
She better do something in the velodrome or she won’t be so popular in Holland—there was a certain amount of bad feeling earlier in the year when she claimed she should have a veto on who else gets picked for the Dutch team, because she’s been the most successful Dutch rider recently.
finally got around to watching this thingy
Agree that Vos was sitting too far back all day. It’s one thing to sit in, save the legs, and wait for the winning move or the sprint. Another, to be so far back as to be out of the race. She was mostly out of it until it was far too late. The conditions made for sketchy racing, so sitting in the middle wasn’t wise either. But the Bigs were at the front, where Vos should have been, if she’d had the legs.
In her post-race comments, she said she just didn’t have good legs and that the others were stronger. I can respect that – especiallly the lack of excuses. A top ten is hardly a disgrace, anyway.
Interesting to see how she goes on the track. What is she riding? Pursuit or points?
Going for 2 ?
Now Team GB cycling chiefs have confirmed 25-year-old Cooke will turn her attentions to the shorter 31.2k time trial event.
Thank you all for the excellent
live thread.
I am shamed, of course, for not being there. I staged every thing, set the alarm for 3am, hit snooze, and then . . . yeah.
I'm still nackered from trying to watch the mens race
no way could I have gone for the double…
"I won! I won! I don't have to go to school anymore." -- Eddy Merckx, after winning his first bike race
I tried, but crashed out about 1:30am!
Kudo’s to all holding up the fort last night!
Congrats to Nicole!
And what can you say about Jeannie Longo’s 24 place: Chapeau!
Still trying to get my heartrate down
I was hoping but thought EJ would waste her energy too early. Instead she rode a perfect race. Cooke was always going to be hard to beat in the end but she came very close.
Huge news for swedish cycling. Nothing like the Olympics to make people stand up and take notice in this part of the world.

Rewatching this now in HD...
... those crashes into the drainage ditch on the road side are really, really nasty…
... it was raining like an SOB for their two laps of the circuit…
... the spray was flying up like a rooster tail from their rear wheels nearly a full meter…
... Christiane Soeder is even cuter in High Definition, now known as “Hot Definition”
I know, it said "als" instead of "ist"... don't give me any crap...
What I Learned Today
I’ve been to a lot of women’s races, but I don’t think I ever – until today – watched a televised women’s road race. During today’s race, I kept noticing – their asses. Which is not noteworthy thing in and of itself. But – and this is what worries me – they just seemed . . . wrong. Odd shape, too big. But I couldn’t figure out why. And then I realized what it was – I have spent so much time staring at men’s asses on bikes that that is what sets the norm, for me.
Perhaps you were watching an HD broadcast...
... with the wrong aspect ratio…
I know, it said "als" instead of "ist"... don't give me any crap...
If you're a normal male
you may want to seek assistance in this matter…..
And then I realized what it was – I have spent so much time staring at men’s asses on bikes that that is what sets the norm, for me.
however those young ladies do have bigger quads than average and I suspect that’s distorting your perception of their assets. Either that or I’ll have to agree that your TV is F*&$ed.

My favourite moment was when Cooke caught the quartet of escapees in the tunnel and just then the TV commentator shut up and we heard a Welsh accented “GO!!! Work together!” echoing in the tunnel—taking charge and bullying the other girls into action.
Post race they said it was a coaching move to
slow just a bit and go right to avoid any potential crashes on that turn…

awesome
My coverage had announcers over that bit, but I could tell by her body language that she was firing them up. That gap was never more than 15 seconds, so they all had to ride hard.
Once Cooke joined that move, that was the race. Good tactical riding from her, to realize that was the move to go. Emma Pooley did a great set-up move earlier in the lap, also. The Italians and the British teams definitely played the race the best. Gudzero’s move was well-timed, and she had the legs not only to make her solo move, but to stay with it, when the others joined. I was surprised to see the Germans miss the winning move, and get left chasing, though Arndt looked to have a mechanical problem in the last lap at the base of the climb. They had some help from Melchers-van Poppel, but the Germans were really the only ones left with the legs to chase in the end. Too bad for them, it wasn’t enough. Cooke’s sprint was all the more impressive, because she seemed to get gapped in the corner leading to the finishing climb. I don’t know what happened there, it was off-camera. But she closed the gap to the leading group, then sprinted over the top of them. Gah, that’s some power on that girl. Not the prettiest sprinting style ever – reminds me a little of Boonen’s sprint – but she gets it done, for sure.
That was crazy racing conditions. That off-camber corner with all the paint, gah. Off camber, then into the toll booth. Zany. No big deal dry, but in the rain? Yikerz.
I think it was Arrndt who dropped her chain ..
.. and that was that.
