Thought I was going to miss the start

but here I am. Yea!

CN reports there’s heavy rain and wind by the Great Wall.

cool!

also….can i use your winning shot of proman….mine was sadly blurry…though Shelly Olds came out clean as did Sarah’s pic….

sure (if it's good)

haven’t looked at them yet. It was tough to shoot the men’s race, don’t think I was able to get a shot of the finish at all. I was surprise that given the Elite nationals going on, and Rochester that it was a good race for both thr men & the women.

Good little spectators

why don’t the chinese just put them on a different road altogether. Makes crowd control even easier. For a view on what it was like on the ground then have a look at the post just under Ronald

okay....you know it's the slow part of the race when

NBC online is giving “tidbits” about the American riders:

Neben is 34, and was diagnosed with skin cancer last fall. Caught early, so she’s fine now, but with regular skin checks.

Armstrong began as a triathlete, competing in the Kona Ironman world champs. But osteoarthritis ended her running career, so she began cycling full time.

And Christine Thorburn is a rheumatologist in Palo Alto, Ca. That’s right, in addition to being a pro cyclist and a 2 time Olympian, she’s a medical doctor. No biggie.

I don’t think she’s been diagnosed with cancer or osteoarthritis, done an Ironman or become a medical doctor. Good thing she’s just a Canadian and NBC doesn’t have to talk/write about her – ‘til she opens a can of Canadian Prairie Whupass!

Are teh Venezuelans really that poor

I can’t recall ever seeing in a race at this level someone handing the empty bidons back to the team car.

by Monty. on Aug 10, 2008 3:00 AM EDT reply actions

cn is really reaching for comments....

The high humidity causes the riders to sweat a lot, so they need to drink even more than usual to keep from getting dehydrated.

doh

by lyne on Aug 10, 2008 3:05 AM EDT reply actions

nbc explains race radios....HA!

Most of the riders have race radios. When you see them press their ears, they’re trying ot hear a message from the team car through their ear pieces.

by steph- on Aug 10, 2008 3:06 AM EDT reply actions

Truly... stunning insight.

I know, it said "als" instead of "ist"... don't give me any crap...

by crashdan on Aug 10, 2008 3:06 AM EDT up reply actions

more NBC insight....

If a rider up front slows just a bit, you’ll have to slam on the brakes. If an attack happens, you’ll need to sprint with everything just to hang on to the draft benefit. The back of the pack is like a whip.

The flip side is that, when you’re in the back, the pack’s movements are magnified.
Pelotons are a pretty cool tool in cycling. The front rider expends a ton of energy fighting the wind, while riders in the middle are protected, and can cruise along using 30% less energy, or more.

by steph- on Aug 10, 2008 3:10 AM EDT up reply actions

I think I will

I made a pot of coffee. Quite a big one. Made it pretty strong, too. Had four cups already. Feeling pretty good. Kinda wired. I think the pace is picking up. Maybe not. Still a big group. They’re starting to climb now. Almost at the finish line for the first time. Where are my Canadian girls? I’m sure hoping they do well. There’s Longo off the back again. Wow, look at that puddle. Ah crap. Crash! Ah shit damn. In the ditch. Damn. i was afraid of that. At least it was on the climb, not on the descent. I hope nobody crashes there. Wow, I’m kinda wired. Science of Sport Dudes have their post-race report on the men’s race up:

by sylvan on Aug 10, 2008 4:22 AM EDT reply actions

Interesting Analysis of the Pollution Situation

“I don’t think that the riders can be ‘trusted’ to provide an accurate assessment of whether the pollution impacted on their performance, simply because it’s almost impossible to differentiate between the heat, humidity and pollution. So, when riders like Stefan Shumacher say that they had a headache because of the pollution, I think it only further serves to propogate what I think is actually a myth about the impact of Beijing’s pollution.”

I don't want no part of Nicole Cooke

in a finish like that on a day like today.

Even more incredible

was the fact that she seemed to lose 50m on the rest with 500 to go.

by Monty. on Aug 10, 2008 5:39 AM EDT up reply actions

She was told to let a gap go by the team car in case there was a crash on the corners.

Does her jersey

have a yellow panel on the front, or is that just the pollution.

by Monty. on Aug 10, 2008 5:36 AM EDT up reply actions

she stuck something in there to keep warm

the jersey is pretty much transparent at this point

Tatiana Guderzo - very aggressive throughout

Got away solo, other four bridged up, Cancellara couldn’t get across this time so the five made it alone.

A frozen 'cross ride from this last weekend. As you may be aware we have had siberian conditions here in the UK with a low of -14 degrees centigrade here on saturday morning. It was a beautiful sunny morning so i layered up and set off for a snowy 'cross ride along a roman road. I checked the thermometer when i got back to find it had been -10 throughout the ride! I had a lot of fun though and the views were spectacular.
