Whoa

I had Tony, Larsson, Kirchen. I’m pretty good at this when I have nothing to gain from it!

well...

the battle was, indeed, for bronze and i would love to have seen Cadel there. but looking at the last two splits and seeing at the last one that it could have gone any of three directions, and then seeing how calm and focused he looked in the post-race footage, i’m satisfied… as he would say, that’s cycling!

congrats to the medallists, and good night all from the west coast!

Cancellara

Fabian is Dehydrated. That’s what the white foam around his mouth is all about. He couldn’t have been far from Bonking at the end. Another 5K and he wouldn’t have won.

by trystero on Aug 13, 2008 5:06 AM EDT reply actions

Well, he did miss a water bottle at one point...

But in his favour that’s pretty much the perfect expenditure of effort.

If you couldn’t go another 100metres, then you’ve paced it perfectly

by grim grimpeur on Aug 13, 2008 5:08 AM EDT reply actions

i could do it in a car

does that count?

i am master of my fate, i am captain of my soul

by randie on Aug 13, 2008 5:10 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, but did you factor in the tool booths

... trying to find where you’ve put the change, adding it up, losing one of the coins between your legs, performing decidedly dodgy-looking manouvre to recover it, dropping the change as you try to hand it over, opening door, scrathing new paintwork on toll-booth, picking up coins, handing them over, getting back into car, waiting for toll barrier to rise, stalling car and then carrying on…

...and you have to do it once on each lap!

Could make it tight to beat Cance overall, i’m thinking

by grim grimpeur on Aug 13, 2008 5:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Don't really care about Tool vs. Toll booth...

... I do like the new word “scrathing” new paintwork.

I know, it said "als" instead of "ist"... don't give me any crap...

Good night all!

Didn’t make the live thread today. The sofa was too appealing. Shame on me! Am now a zombie sitting at my desk. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

by Albertina on Aug 13, 2008 8:18 AM EDT reply actions

having fallen asleep so only the computer was watching

I am now watching again with non-bleary eyes. I notice that Gesink spent most of his race (except when he was out of the saddle, which was pretty often) hauling his ass back on the saddle after sliding up and nearly off the nose every 20 seconds or so. In some other cases, the fabric of the skin suits looks…somehow stuck on the seat, in that it sort of pouches slightly behind the rider’s ass.

Yes, I’m looking closely, now that we have really top quality video, but no, it’s not (in this case) prurient interest.

Is it legal to put glue, sticky tape, sharkskin, whatever, on the bike seat or the clothing, and if so, why doesn’t everyone do it? It has to be a distraction and an interference with cadence to keep shoving yourself back on the seat, no matter how good you are.

by JFS_PGH on Aug 13, 2008 8:56 AM EDT reply actions

and on the countdowns, as noted, it's in your home language of choice to the Nth degree

Spartacus taking not Italian nor High German but Swiss-German dialect (“dru, tsvo,”) now that’s service!).

by JFS_PGH on Aug 13, 2008 10:09 AM EDT reply actions

Yes I noticed that (not the Swiss German bit however)

So you have to be a polyglot to be a countdown person these days. Did anyone hear of he did it in Iranian? Or perhaps in Asturian for Samu?!

Just watched the replay of the live video

Waiting for the medal ceremony to begin. Cancellara looked like he may need the doc for a little fluid replacement first.

So proud of Levi!

What a fantastic race. Followed your live commentary along with the video while watching at work. Thank you for keeping me company today.

So about my “medal” contract. It seems “medal” I should be getting a whole “medal” lot more for my “medal” abilities.

Was watching it last night

and I’ve never seen a guy look like that and finish high up. He wore every kilometer on his face. That should be a primer to anyone who wants to take up TTing – there shouldn’t be one second of it that’s even remotely pleasurable.

Speaking of which, was there a greater segment than when Tony caught and dropped Schumacher?

His best quote after the race

by Jens on Aug 14, 2008 11:38 AM EDT up reply actions

And anybody who follows cycling closely

knows that the last 100 meters probably seemed like an hour for him. He left every cell of his body out on that course – extremely inspirational.

Did anyone by chance (looking Dan’s way) happen to DVR the TT and if so, is there a way to say, burn that onto a disc? And if so, is there a way that someone who rides their trainer a lot during the winter (rolls eyes and whistles) could obtain a copy of such, strictly for training purposes?

Larsson thanks Barbie for the medal

Had to make a visor for his TT helmet so he made one out of the clear plastic from a Barbie package he bought in a local toystore. High tech stuff.

he and Contador went visor shopping at the same store. at least they didn’t steal their helmets from the Silver Surfer like Cummings did…
