I stand in awe of both of your scheduling tablature prowess

I know, it said "als" instead of "ist"... don't give me any crap...

I highly recomend watching Phinny.

There is some serious speed to be seen by the riders he’s up against. Should be exciting.
I’m getting up early next Tuesday to watch Meatball and Lea. The Madison is pretty cool with the hand slings to bolt the other one up in the exchange.

It is easy once you figure out the process

The secret is to make your spreadsheet in excel then paste it into word and then copy and paste from word into your fanpost by clicking the “paste from Word” icon and it keeps all the table formating. You may have to post the fanpost and then edit out some gobbledy gook at the top of the table but it works like a charm.

Isn't Capt. Manx riding the track for England?

I know, it said "als" instead of "ist"... don't give me any crap...

Naa

they came up with some truly bizarre excuse, viz. Right now he is in the news as Britain’s hottest cyclist (hottest as in the pre Podium Cafe sense) and people wouldn’t understand if he didn’t win (which he probably wouldn’t). So they’ve stuck in some other schmuck who won’t mind losing.

Although

Our schmuck went faster in qualifying than Phinney. In honour of which I have looked up his name. Well done to Steven Burke.

by Monty. on Aug 15, 2008 5:50 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

And maybe now I should take back the schmuck bit back

Steven Burke (or Burkey as the chinese announcer calls him) has knocked 10 seconds off his PB in the last couple of days and come away with a bronze medal. Quite incredible for someone who as far as I can tell was not scheduled to race at all in the Olympics and was pretty much brought along because the team had one spare place.

Mind you, the competition was very weak. Brad Wiggins was looking to hit around 4.13, but didn’t need to bother because only one other rider in the whole competition even went under 4.20. Mark Cavendish apparently didn’t ride because he reckoned that the best he could do was 4.20 and 5th place. I wonder if he’s kicking himself now.

Oh good... I was hoping he was there...

… it would have sucked if all that hard training he did after abandoning the tour by riding all those Belgian and Dutch crits had gone to waste :)

Seriously though… I’ve been itching to see what that guy is like in a velodrome when he doesn’t have to jostle with 25 other guys and can just go flat out.

I know, it said "als" instead of "ist"... don't give me any crap...

NBC doesn't have any

track video up yet. Hopefully that will change.

And even though he most likely won’t medal, why they aren’t humping the Taylor Phinney story is beyond me. 18yr old cycling phenom with a junior world title already and two Olympic medalist parents. If he was a gymnast NBC would have an entire channel dedicated to covering him.

Somehow I don't count that as a proper race

it’s the cycling equivalent of going back in to school after the exams have finished. Fun, but …

thanks for the link

the whole Canadian madison team (or men’s track team in general) has been wrought with controversy and confusion for quite a way back … I think the only reason that Canada got a madison spot in the end was because Zach Bell and Svein Tuft won the Pan Am championships, yet the CCA neglected Tuft for the spot because their “designated” madison team was Gilbert and Ryan McKenzie – presumably in the end they figured Bell was already at the Olympics (for the points race) so why send 2 other athletes when you can just send one? or who knows… not good blood between Symmetrics and the CCA…

Wow... I totally misread that first bit...

… I thought it said “Canadian Molson Team”…

did you hear about the new series?

“The Animated Adventures of Bob and Doug McKenzie” -13 episodes on the Canadian Global network next year, and apparently Fox is picking it up too. It would be quite amusing to see them try to ride a madison, I think ;-).

Oh dear god I can only hope...

… There’s some comedy gold still to be mined from those two.

Nice job, Cervelo

Seriously, you couldn’t give the guy one lousy bike?

(Uhh, who are the other two Canuk road bike manufacturers?)

Canuck bikes...

Symmetrics rides Norco but I don’t believe they do track bikes (Bell has a Cervelo, not sure where he got it from … maybe a team connection?) – also DeVinci, Rocky Mountain, Marinoni (not sure who makes track bikes though)

This video is an attempt to show the ambience at the final hour of the Nice Ironman competition. A lame attempt i'll admit, but wth? If you're ever going to finish towards the end of an ironman, i suggest Nice as the place to do it. The applause and support and general ambience at the end is really remarkable. Dj's, pom-pom girls, people dancing, shouting, dance music blasting ... Some finishers just go on through, others raise their arms or just have a huge smile, one guy did some pushups while the dj counted for him, another did a cartwheel, some ran through with their little kids holding their hands. And this all 8 hours after the winners have finished.

When i went out my door to walk over to see the last hour or so of the Ironman, the first thing i saw was a guy across the street, pushing his triathlon bike, head hanging down to his chest, walking with a pronounced. Painful. Slow. Trudge. Medal around his neck. He'd done well. Hope he felt better the next day.

Then i got to the promenade and started seeing more of the people who'd finished: one guy asleep on the pavement with his wife by his side in all the raucous noise and confusion and crowds everywhere. Then the medical tent - massages, those heat blanket thingies, oxygen, people limping aorund, Oy!

Then every now and then you see a finisher with a medal around their neck who look fresh as a daisy, like they've just had a nice walk in the park.

Then finally you get to the finish line ... and that's the video. At the end there's a fireworks display (no one timed their finish to coincide with it this year) and then apparently a few hundred people stayed all night to party on the prom next to the beach until daybreak.

I could not do an ironman even if i wanted to, but i'll be there again next year to help welcome the last finishers in.
