Olympics: Track Cycling, Day 1

Olympic_medium

The Olympic competitions in track cycling open with the team sprint and the qualifying round for the individual pursuit for both men and women. How 'bout a little preview thingy? No guarantees that we will have preview every day. But today? We have preview.

Also, see Clydesdale's lovely schedule of events, if you'd like to play along at home.

Star-divide

Team Sprint.

What exactly is the team sprint? Simple. Two teams start on the track at opposite ends. Each team has three riders. They ride three laps total, with each rider leading the threesome for one of the laps. Typically, the first rider is a sprinter, who can get up to speed quickly, the second and third kilo or pursuiter types, who have more endurance. The team's time is set when the third rider crosses the line. So, pretty much we're talking about a very short team time trial here. Without brakes. Oh, and there is no team sprint for women.

Favorites? The French are far and away the favorites in this event, as they have won the World Championship three years running. Their team will consist of Grégory Baugé, Kévin Sireau, Arnaud Tournant, though they have also brought a fourth rider Mickaël Bourgain, in the event they want to make a substitution between the Qualifying and Final heat. The British led by Chris Hoy won the silver medal in this event at Worlds. The Germans won in Athens, and Stefan Nimke returns from their Athens line-up. He is joined by Olaf Pollack and Roger Kluge. Look for the Netherlands and Australia to place well, here, also. Michael Blatchford, Adam Duvendeck, and Giddeon Massie will ride for the United States.

Individual Pursuit.

What is it? Two riders take to the track at opposite ends. They chase one another around it. Um, hence the name? They race against one another and the clock. The fastest times advance to the next round. Tonight only a qualifying round will be run. The men ride 4000 meters, the women, 3000 meters. Aerodynamics, deep lungs, and strong legs win the pursuit. The world record for men is held by Chris Boardman of Great Britain, 4:11.114, set in 1996. Sara Ulmer of New Zealand holds the womens' record, 3:24.537, set in Athens in 2004.

Mens' Favorites Here is your start list for the mens' race.

Bradley Wiggins of the United Kingdom is the current World Champion in this event, and should be the favorite to win. He will be challenged by Australian talent, Bradley McGee, though it's unclear what effect McGee's injury troubles may have had on his preparation. Brett Lancaster, more typically seen on the road playing lead-out, will also ride for Australia. Lancaster was a member of the gold medal winning Aussie team pursuit in Athens. Taylor Phinney of the United States continues his meteoric rise through the ranks of international cycling. His lack of experience may hurt him, but he's a thorough bred talent. One to watch, for sure.

Womens' Favorites. Here is your start list for the womens' pursuit. Don't forget: The women ride 3000 meters.

Rebecca Romero of Great Britain is the current world champion in this event. She narrowly beat American pursuit talent Sara Hammer, of the United States, who has quite simply one of the best names in cycling. These two are the favorites. Katie Mactier, riding for Australia, may have something to say about that, however. She is a past World Champion in this event, and finished second to Ulmer in Athens. Karin Thurig of Switzerland showed her form in the womens' crono already. She will also ride the pursuit, and was fifth in Athens. Her best international result in the pursuit was third at Worlds in 2005.

well done chaps! this'll be exciting...

Track sprinters

are always the large and in charge types. Big legs, big shoulders, big arms, usually between 6’ and 6’4" and 200 – 225 lbs. I loved watching Nothstein in his prime.

Please allow me

to introduce myself.
Been lurking since the Giro and just finally figured out how to adjust browser and firewall settings to join this wonderful group. I quit racing about 40 years ago, but have remained an enthusiastic and dedicated fan and rider.

Lovely ride for the team sprint gold medal. Chris Hoy four lengths off Kennys’ wheel half way through the second lap and still beat Tournant. WOW!

Can’t wait to see him crush in the Keirin. That man is fast.

yay!

welcome to the party :-)

more is better.

That was an incredible ride from Hoy

it looked like he pretty much did two full laps on his own, so far was he from the second man’s wheel.

inquiring minds...

Fancan, if you are so inclined, it would be cool information, not bragging, to tell us what racing you did in the… um, guess it would be the 60’s?

Club racing

Got talked into buying a 10-speed (Torpado, full campy, $155,lol) and riding with the local club as cross training for skiing by the local ski shop owner in 1962, I think. Most club members were speed skaters with a few skiers in the mix, all cross training for the winter sports. The only thing I can brag about is riding my bike to the races not driving. A move to north of 60 ended my involvement with racing but not my riding or love of the sport.

by fancan on Aug 16, 2008 5:44 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

definite thumbs up for combining bike racing and bike commuting

And I think quite some few or many of us [heart] the skiing too.

Is Taylor's qulifying ride available on the NBC site?

Just getting back into the swing of things, after a solid week at a computer graphics conference. Looking forwards to the rest of the track cycling now.

Taylor Phinney Coverage Saturday at 12 Noon PST on NBC...
12:00p – 1:00p: Teenage track cycling prodigy Taylor Phinney has had two clear role models: his father, the first American to win a stage of the Tour de France, and his mother, who won the first Olympic women’s road race at the 1984 Los Angeles Games. Now Taylor chases a medal in the men’s individual pursuit. Also, gold medals in rowing and women’s badminton.

Men's GM Sprint video is up at NBC's site

And let me tell you, those are some big boys. Nearly 62kph at the finish.

at the line for Chris Hoy in the keirin. 5 more medals on the boards for the Brits.

Now that's a leadout

Wow. I wish I could find his wattage numbers for that race.

If you get a chance,

check out Women’s 3000m pursuit qualifier. The British woman (Houvernaghel) has the most fluid style, just beautiful to watch. Impressive.

Sara Hammer (US) looked like she was fighting her bike the whole time. I don’t know if it was an off day or she’s still working herself back from the injuries she sustained in her LA crash – suspect the latter.

Day 2, anyone...?

as McDonald’s is being billed as the official restaurant of these Games, let me just say I’m lovin’ it! Hoy, Wiggins, Edgar, Romero, Houvernaghel, et al – wow!! Go Brits!! (not a very technical commentary, I know, but dashing out the door for a morning spin…)

Thanks Katiek!

I’m so happy to read that he’s pretty much all smiles about his experience. The olympics are way more than medals and I’m happy he’s embraced it. His future is just getting started.

This video is an attempt to show the ambience at the final hour of the Nice Ironman competition. A lame attempt i'll admit, but wth? If you're ever going to finish towards the end of an ironman, i suggest Nice as the place to do it. The applause and support and general ambience at the end is really remarkable. Dj's, pom-pom girls, people dancing, shouting, dance music blasting ... Some finishers just go on through, others raise their arms or just have a huge smile, one guy did some pushups while the dj counted for him, another did a cartwheel, some ran through with their little kids holding their hands. And this all 8 hours after the winners have finished.

When i went out my door to walk over to see the last hour or so of the Ironman, the first thing i saw was a guy across the street, pushing his triathlon bike, head hanging down to his chest, walking with a pronounced. Painful. Slow. Trudge. Medal around his neck. He'd done well. Hope he felt better the next day.

Then i got to the promenade and started seeing more of the people who'd finished: one guy asleep on the pavement with his wife by his side in all the raucous noise and confusion and crowds everywhere. Then the medical tent - massages, those heat blanket thingies, oxygen, people limping aorund, Oy!

Then every now and then you see a finisher with a medal around their neck who look fresh as a daisy, like they've just had a nice walk in the park.

Then finally you get to the finish line ... and that's the video. At the end there's a fireworks display (no one timed their finish to coincide with it this year) and then apparently a few hundred people stayed all night to party on the prom next to the beach until daybreak.

I could not do an ironman even if i wanted to, but i'll be there again next year to help welcome the last finishers in.
