Volta a Portugal: the first big Test.

With some patience of Crashdan i could do a route map of the 3th stage.

Tomorrow is the first big test for the contenders. Will be 171km with 3 climbs, finish in "Torre" a mythical climb in Portugal, is like Galibrier or Alpe d’Huez in the Tour. This is the higher point in Portugal (islands not include), but the path of this year is new, never climbed a race until the top down this path. So will be strange for almost every riders, training is one thing, compete is other...

It begins in Idanha-a-Nova and will be a flat path of 71km before the first difficulty. In "Unhais da Serra" begins the 2th categorie climb with 20km.  The sprinters will loose the pace here.

(Click in the pictures to enlarge)

More on the flip...

Star-divide

After that, a drop of slightly less than 20 km to a new rise.. This time a 1th categorie with 10km, with ramps of 10% in the beginning and in the end. Here the things will starting to warm up, last year was the LA MSS, but this year probably will be Benfica or even Saunier Duvall, that will do the work. Average gradient is 6,8%.

Over 20 km flat and begins the final ascent up to 1993m altitude. The climb is steep in the beginning, after a little flat about 1-2km, then others ramps of 11%. After this flat is almost 20km always climbing. Average gradient is 5%.

One of the favourite in this stage is Eladio Jimenez, the last three stages that pass in "Serra da Estrela" (the final climb) Jimenez win. Tomorrow despite Mancebo (his teammate from Fercase and the likely leader), I think Jimenez will have "free" to go away, because winning in the Torre is a big objective for all teams.

Hector Guerra and Plaza will be marking each other, they are the best time trialist and I think neither of both will attack. Jose Azevedo and Candido Barbosa from Benfica will have to attack here if they want win the TdP, but the big question is, who is the leader of Benfica? Jose Azevedo returns to Portugal for win this race, a race that he did a lot but never wins, before Once he had always a bad day in "Serra da Estrela" stage. This year he he has not proved anything and has been very poor (another winner like Sastre?). Candido Barbosa is like Kirchen, he can sprint, he can do good ITT, but when came a high mountain he had very difficulties. Seems that Ruben Plaza will be the lider.

Guerra have Koldo Gil, another possible winner for tomorrow, and Nuno Ribeiro that can does well after is 28th place in Olympics. Guerra I think is better than Plaza in high mountains, he had great results this year (winner of Gp Lodio and Volta ao Alentejo, now he is in 4º on UCI Ranking). Plaza wins Valenciana and disappeared in the rest of the season .

I had big hopes for Tiago Machado, with 23 years old he is the leader of Madeinox-Boavista and the biggest promise of portuguese cycling. He is like Sergio Paulinho, excellent time-trialist (2th in nationals ITT, 2 seconds behind Paulinho), a rider very combative and good in the mountains. I thought he could win, but with the loose of yesterday (1min 26sec) he will know struggle for top10, like he said before the start of this race.

In American Beef, Jose Cobo Acebo seems that is in good shape and already said that wants to win this race. He will have to gain some time in this stage, if he climb like in the Tour... poor opponents.

David Blanco, David Bernabeu, Santi Perez, Hugo Sabido, Andrian Palomares can also make good performance tomorrow. And Daniel Martin, will he achieve?  He can take Orange jersey (best youngest) from Cozza, tomorrow…

then remembered about your camping trip…

"Have you ever been to Wales, Baldrick?"
"No, but I’ve often thought I’d like to."
"Well don’t, it’s a ghastly place. Huge gangs of tough sinewy men roam the valleys terrifying people with their close harmony singing. You need half a pint of phlegm in your throat just to pronounce the

If anyone is wondering about the "islands not include" clause

Here are some portuguese mountains of the “island” variety. (Pretty country you have there, Sempre!)

by JFS_PGH on Aug 15, 2008 11:10 PM EDT reply actions

this is in

the island of “Pico”, in archipelagos Açores or Azores like you say (this is the higher point in all Portugal). When i was children i visited this island, but now i have only a few memories…

by semprenaroda on Aug 16, 2008 12:34 AM EDT up reply actions

the flat parts of Pico are very good for (pleasure) cycling

If I lived closer, I would try to go there often! Sao Miguel was a bit too curvy with too many cars—would be great on a motorbike. And natural hot springs are wonderful.

P.S. Sorry, I have to cheer for Cozza, hope that’s OK…

Great job my man!

Looks very cool… i hope I have a chance to tune in tomorrow morning… also hope I have a chance in the future to drag you to one of those islands to go hiking!

sponsor plug & random rider comment

As the name implies, Ceramica Flaminia makes ceramics—specifically, cool, bizarre bathroom fixtures. So if you want a shower / tub that looks like a giant salad bowl, you now know who makes them. The team site has a lot of nice pictures, as well as way too much flash junk. (“Flash junk” might also describe the team shorts.)

Anyone else think that their shot of Simeoni (go to corriadori and mouse over the riders) looks like Baldrick from Black Adder?

Really Baldrick...

… you wouldn’t see a subtle plan if it painted itself purple and danced naked on top of a harpsichord singing “Subtle Plans Are Here Again”.

I know, it said "als" instead of "ist"... don't give me any crap...

by crashdan on Aug 16, 2008 1:30 AM EDT up reply actions

ok, here we go...

…I fear the words “I have a cunning plan” are rapidly marching towards this conversation with ill-deserved confidence…

and then there’s

“Baldrick, your brain is like the four headed, man-eating haddock fish beast of Aberdeen”
"In what way? "
"It doesn’t exist "

by nicknorco on Aug 16, 2008 1:44 AM EDT up reply actions

In fact, there is something in your stocking, Baldrick, something I made for you.

Ah, well that’s the best kind of gift, Mr. B. What is it?

It’s a fist! It’s for hitting people with… And the great thing is, you can use it again and again!

I know, it said "als" instead of "ist"... don't give me any crap...

by crashdan on Aug 16, 2008 2:20 AM EDT up reply actions

As a reward, Baldrick, take a short holiday...did you enjoy it?

“Have you ever been to Wales, Baldrick?”
“No, but I’ve often thought I’d like to.”
“Well don’t, it’s a ghastly place. Huge gangs of tough sinewy men roam the valleys terrifying people with their close harmony singing. You need half a pint of phlegm in your throat just to pronounce the

An unwise action, Baldrick, since Mad McAdder is a homicidal maniac.

“My mother told me to stand up to homicidal maniacs.”
“Yes. If this is the same mother who confidently claimed that you were a tall handsome stallion of a man, I should treat her opinions with extreme caution.”
“I love my mum.”
“And I love chops and sauce but I don’t seek their advice.”

I know, it said "als" instead of "ist"... don't give me any crap...

by crashdan on Aug 17, 2008 12:55 AM EDT up reply actions

To you, Baldrick, the Renaissance was just something that happened to other people, wasn't it?

“Right Baldrick, let’s try again. This is called adding. If I have two beans and then I add two more beans, what do I have?”

“Some beans.”

“Yes…and no. Let’s try again, shall we? I have two beans, then I add to more beans what does that make?”

" A very small casserole."

“Baldrick, the ape creatures of the Indus have mastered this. Now, try again. One, two, three, four! So how many are there?”

“Three.”

" What?"

“And that one.”

"Three and that one. So if I add that one to the three what will I have?

“Ah! Some beans.”

“Yes. To you Baldrick, the Renaissance was just something that happened to other people, wasn’t it?”

“I have a cunning plan to solve the problem.”

“Yes Baldrick. Let us not forget you tried to solve the problem of your mother’s low ceiling by cutting off her head.”

Speaking of teams...

…Benfica has a cycling team? Is there any sport they don’t have teams in?

What’s next – a rider from Man U or Chelsea winning the tour?

by plinytheelder on Aug 16, 2008 3:17 PM EDT reply actions

Pliny the Elder...

I had to write a report in elementary school on the eruption of Vesuvius and as an epilogue for my report, I composed a (fictional) personal letter by Pliny the Younger written in the hold of a boat he had escaped in describing the aftermath of the eruption.

I know, it said "als" instead of "ist"... don't give me any crap...

by crashdan on Aug 16, 2008 7:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Wow...

…that is something you should seriously look into getting published! ;)

by plinytheelder on Aug 17, 2008 3:38 AM EDT up reply actions

I tell ya...

… that was some damn good writing for a ten year old… my Dad saved the report and I ran across it in an ooooold file folder of school projects and such about a month or two ago.

Seriously though… did you happen to hear about the library they have been working on in Herculaneum that was, reportedly, the library of Julius Ceasar’s father-in-law? They’ve found a multitude of scrolls in the library that were “preserved” by the eruption (as in “turned to charcoal”) which they can now start to read using modern techniques. They are saying that finding Aristotles second volume of Poetics and things of that nature are now within the realm of possibilities. Something along the lines of “a library only outdone by that of the destroyed Alexandrian library” hyperbole was used in the article I read in “The Age”. I’ll see if I can look it up.

Chances are Gavia already has a copy of the scrolls if for no other purpose than to find a NEW way to mangle her grammar ;)

by plinytheelder on Aug 18, 2008 3:45 PM EDT up reply actions

They were hoping for that sort of stuff

but one of the few follow-up articles I ever found mentioned that most of the stuff they had deciphered to date turned out to be third-rate philosophers, the sort of stuff you find in birthday cards nowadays, and the classical equivalent of Dan Brown and Jeffrey Archer.

by crashdan on Aug 16, 2008 7:25 PM EDT up reply actions

no, he need more for the final ITT

Sousa is a recognized worker and a pure climber. David Blanco is one of the best time-trialist here.

Today was a perfect day for Liberty Seguros but this David Blanco will be a hard bone for chewing. (Maybe they were not expect this spanish to be the main threat, i didn’t)
David Blanco wins the TdP in 2006 in the last time trial.

Sousa have to gain more one minute or two at least, Guerra have to gain one minute to goes in last ITT with same time of Blanco. Will be a nice race, and now only in Thursday he will see some action with a finish of 5km in the final. Guerra in maximum gains 30 seconds in the final ITT against Blanco.

The decisive stage will be the 9th (before ITT) with five climbs and finish in 8km climb, but steep.

http://www.volta-portugal.com/etapas/etapa9/altimetria.html

I think Nuno Ribeiro will be the best portuguese.
