Cunego Out of Olympics

Olympic_medium

Damiano Cunego will not take the start in next week's Olympic road race. Together with Franco Ballerini, director of the Azurri, he took the decision after Saturday's Clasica San Sebastien. Cunego is still troubled by his injuries from his crash at the Tour de France. He had "negative sensations" during the race, including difficulty breathing and a nagging headache. No word yet on who will replace him in Beijing.

that's sad...

I felt bad for him in the Tour and I thought Lampre’s rescue and his finishing Stage 18 were among the more memorable moments. Breathing difficulty doesn’t sound good considering how he slammed his chest into that barrier. He really had the worst luck in the ‘08 Tour.

I hope he recovers well…

lol

i think bruseghin and nibali were only riding the crono and now will ride both to cover cunego’s spot.

the list i saw previously wasn’t clear on that point, but yesterday’s gazzetta suggested that was how things would go.

gah, nibali’s racing his legs off this season.

by Jen See on Aug 3, 2008 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions

yes he is

but more nibali to cheer for eases the blow of losing cunego…

Happy puppy?

Anyone else notice that the moment people started calling him “happy puppy” his career went straight into the tank?

You mean he's ben dogged by a bad nickname?

Every dog has his day,its just that his hasn’t come yet.

the nickname is officially banned from use.

anything to see that guy back riding well.

i guess he made it to the jezawhatsit climb yesterday before going out the back. but it was a rough day at the races for him. good call to stay home. the late season races in italy and worlds suit him and the rest will do him well.

Sergio Paulinho will miss the Olympics too

he quit from the Classica San Sebastian and have health problems.

His request for asthma medicaments are denied.

Nuno Ribeiro (winner TdP 2003)and Andre Cardoso (Mountain Jersey in TdP 2007) will be the only portuguese riders.

this just in...
Italy’s Damiano Cunego, 26 years-old of Team Lampre, is set to make his return to racing in the Tre Valli Varesine in two weeks. It will be one week after the Olympic road race he was forced to skip due to an injury sustained in the Tour de France.

Cunego crashed in stage 18 of the Tour de France. There were no fractures, but there were many contusions on the chest, belly, face and arms. He received five stitches on the chin and bandages on his chest and arms that night in Saint-Étienne.

Yesterday, a neurological check at a hospital near his home in Verona ruled out any further problems, though Cunego still suffers from headaches confirmed by Lampre’s press officer Andrea Appiani. Doctors said the pain should pass in the next days. Following an unsuccessful return in San Sebastián, he is clear to return to training at low intensities. His programme should include Tre Valli Varesine (August 19). GP Plouay (24) and the Deutschland Tour (29 – September 6).

source?

best to give the link rather than lifting the text.

just trying to keep the copyright karma on our side :-)

by Jen See on Aug 5, 2008 11:29 AM EDT up reply actions

an oversight

as i usually put the source, in this case CN. Must have been between espressos this morning. The reason for lifting the text is CN’s news round-up format – saves you having to skim the page for the relevant bit.

lol, no worries

life is rough between espresso. i try to spend as little time as possible in that situation :-)

i kinda feel bad for cn, because their stuff gets re-posted so often. but then, if they really wanted us to linky them up nicelike, they’d give us linkies for each story. so i guess it all comes out even in the end.

by Jen See on Aug 5, 2008 8:45 PM EDT up reply actions

well yes CN is sooooo web.10

a lot (most) of the daily material is also taken from press releases or translations from other sources, but still I guess a linkie is cool

life between espressos (or wines later in the day) is simply unthinkable

by lyne on Aug 5, 2008 8:49 PM EDT up reply actions

indeed

i’ll give them the on the record with mcquaid this am on the sella thingy, but otherwise, it was the same article i read. and yes, that site pains the eyes.

lol, i was trying not to be snarky, but really, it’s unsustainable.

is it wine time yet?

A frozen 'cross ride from this last weekend. As you may be aware we have had siberian conditions here in the UK with a low of -14 degrees centigrade here on saturday morning. It was a beautiful sunny morning so i layered up and set off for a snowy 'cross ride along a roman road. I checked the thermometer when i got back to find it had been -10 throughout the ride! I had a lot of fun though and the views were spectacular.
