Eneco Tour Open Thread

Ah, Cycling in the Low Countries. Any chance of freezing rain and high winds this week? There's so, so much to be said for racing in this corner of the world, but the Eneco Tour has yet to generate much enthusiasm, at least in our corner. Lack of video, lack of excitement by the pro scene, competing for airspace with the Deutschland Tour and Vuelta (and don't forget Poland!). But for me, the real problem is the lack of echelons. Yeah, it looks like BeNeLux cycling, but without the nasty weather, it's just a pleasant ride with modest grades.

Jose Ivan Gutierrez opened his account with a win in the prologue yesterday, a nice result with the #1 dossard on his back. The overall win will likely be contested over the last 18km, the race's lone non-prologue time trial scheduled for next Wednesday in Mechelen, Belgium. But the stage battles will be fun: Tom Boonen and Daniele Bennati will lock horns at last! For Boonen, some big wins would be a nice way to put his unpleasant summer behind him. Columbia's sprinter appears to be Andre Greipel, though Andreas Klier knows these roads pretty well. And Mick Rogers will be a serious threat for the overall, after looking great in the Olympics... assuming he's got the black stuff out of his lungs.

Who ya got for the overall? And Boonen or Bennati: most stage wins?

was the eurosport streaming better today than yesterday's 90kbps?

What happened to CTV's coverage?

CTV’s premium package still has it as the “Next Live Event” but they are obviously not carrying it. If I recall correctly, this is the second or third dropped race from the Premium package since the new website.

I’m afraid we’ll never get to test out CTV’s new beta.

sigh.

ctv couldn't get the rights to broadcast eneco or plouay for this year

Neither!

I’m thinking that both Killer B’s are gearing up for the Vuelta and so while one of them might win the most stages, neither will sweat it too much.

But your opening paragraph makes me wonder a) when the ENECO Tour should happen and b) what would a really good racing calendar look like. My first thought on a) is maybe ENECO should be in October as a bookend to Het Volk. Yeah I know about Lombardia but you can have an alternative and October is when the weather turns in the low-down countries and I like the symmetry.

Boonen, Bennati, Sabatini

Gavia and the other hottitude fans (yeah, me included) get their fix as Boonen and Bennati go 1-2.

Argh, though. My live feed cut died in the last 2K, and I got it back up just after they crossed the line. They did show a replay, but it’s not the same. Not that the postage-stamp-sized window is optimum viewing…but at least it’s there.

Where's Katiek?

We need some good pics of that finish! I attempted once this morning and it appears that my office is blocking most video these days. It appears I still get CTV streaming though so when on earth are they coming back with coverage?

Unfortunately

good hotitude pics from this race are hard to come by so far

The best I can do is Boonen trying to be pensive

bit of a teaser, that. i’m guessing he looks rather stunning in black.

I tried posting a reply to this while in lovely Lausanne

but my internet connection was a disaster and it wouldn’t work…. I actually rather like this, nostrils and all. I’m a fan of his dreamy expression.

Thank goodness tomorrow is Friday.

That allows some more free time this weekend to look for pics. There is nothing at all wrong with our blessed shots from Sui Juris and Tifosa but some updates would be good. It’s going to be a long winter and all… all smiles. :-)

It was set up to be a nice sprint

The QS lead out man (??) was on the front round the final corner with Boonen behind and Bennati on his wheel. Behind him Boassen Hagen and Roelandts (in his shiny new Belgian champ jersey) fought for the wheel. But then the lead out pulled off just as Bennati was coming round, so he got sort of half squidged against the barriers and couldn’t get back to Boonen in time. Meanwhile Hagen lost the battle for Bennati’s wheel so spent much of the last 500m or so in the wind and faded away to nothing. overtaken by a couple of the boys in blue getting their characteristic places among the also-rans in the sprint.

Columbia Sprinter wins again

Greipel. Boy they sure can win sprints this year.

I think, with my lousy feed. Nothing like watching a rainy sprint.

Greipel
Haedo
Haussler ? Or was he second?
Fourth Place
Boonen

by Markk on Aug 22, 2008 10:33 AM EDT reply actions

Stage 2 results

1st Greipel
2nd Haedo
3rd um…Forster, I think. the French ticker first said Haussler, then changed it to Forster. Another source still says Haussler.
4th Van Hummel
5th Boonen

Tour of Portugal 8th stage

What a race today!! With some mountains in the midle, in last hour more than 10 attacks in the breakaway and the peloton. Marchante, Palomares, Nuno Ribeiro (6º in General), Felix Cardenas, Chuzda, Isidro Nozal….

In the final it was bunch sprint: with a selective peloton:
1º Candido Barbosa wins again
2º Francisco Pacheco
t3º Rubén Plaza Benfica
4º Juan José Cobo Scott-American Beef
5º Héctor Guerra Liberty Seguros
10 Daniel Martin Garmin-Chipotle

The sprint betwen Candido Barbosa (red) and Francico Pacheco(white jersey) seems to me ilegal from Barbosa. He looks for the right, and when didn’t saw anyone, he started turn left.
The judges said that was legal and Barbosa was the winner, i think not. See the picture film of the sprint:

http://costinhas.planetaclix.pt/fafe/sprint_fafe.html

tomorrow is the main stage with five categories climb, finish with a climb too.

Guess who is on holiday in the Algarve, in my region? Michael Phelps!!
It was seen in a disco and television now go on top of him.

Stage 3 results--Bennati wins

1. Bennati
2. Boonen
3. Roelandts
4. Van Hummel
5. Bozic

by majope on Aug 23, 2008 11:28 AM EDT reply actions

Anybody else still watching?

Eneco Tour Stage 4:

Tom Boonen won decisively today—in the last kilometer or so he, Kenny Van Hummel and Edvald Boasson Hagen* shot out ahead of the pack and finished 1, 2, 3. Daniele Bennati was nowhere to be seen.

Andre Greipel took over as leader of the race by snatching up sprint bonus points, pushing Bennati into second place overall while Boonen moved up into 4th behind 3rd-place Boasson Hagen.

Today’s results:
1. Boonen
2. Van Hummel
3. Boasson Hagen
4. Bozic
5. Breschel
6. Roelandts
7. Clerc
8. Chicchi
9. Rigotto
10. Lemoine

*listed as Boasson on SBS TV and as Hagen in the podium results here. I’m hedging my bets and listing him as both.

by majope on Aug 24, 2008 11:10 AM EDT reply actions

His last name(s) are Boasson Hagen

So you are correct in listing both. He’s always used both.
