Got Gossip? And, more on the Cervelo Rumor
A few more details are emerging on the rumored new team to be sponsored by Canadian bike manufacturer Cervelo. The team, with Swiss registration, will aim for ProContinental status, which gives it a shot at wildcard race invites.
According to today's press, current Gerolsteiner DS, Christian Henn, is the mastermind behind the new team. Already Carlos Sastre is connected by Rumor to Cervelo, though he has refused to confirm his plans for next season until after the Vuelta. Two new names have emerged: Bernhard Kohl and Stefan Schumacher. Kohl recently denied stories that he would ride for QuickStep next year, though Austrian team Volksbank, Team Columbia, Silence-Lotto, and Milram are still reportedly pursuing him. Schumacher's plans remain a mystery, but if Gerolsteiner DS Henn is involved in the rumored new team, well, it wouldn't be too surprising to see a few ex-Gerosteiner riders follow him, now would it.
Me? I believe these things when I see the team photo. But it does now sound increasingly firm that a team is in the works. Who will ride for it? Eh, we wait and see, but a Gerolsteiner-heavy roster would not be a surprise.
Note from Gav: The Gossip column will not appear this week, in order to give the brain and fingers of the Gossip a little break. We will return next week with all the silliness you need, and plenty you don't. In the meantime, feel free to add any and all tastey morsels you may have seen here. Build your own Gossip column in just a few easy steps! Pictures of the scenery at the Eneco Tour are especially welcome. À Presto!

Stefan Schumacher?
Gonna be interesting to see if Vroomen sticks with his claim that any future sponsorship agreements are going to require an anti-doping programme.

Yeah, I got some gossip.
FINALLY! U.S. Pro competitors have been announced. Check it out HERE.
I’m actually trying to put together a “favorites preview” and make it my first official main post. But, please don’t let my procrastination stop someone else from promulgating one.
I will say this though, having witnessed the 2006 race and closely followed the USPro Champs. RR for about 16 years now, the winner is determined by more than “who has the form”. More on that later…
Short summary, Garmin-Chipotle is listing a pretty stacked roster for this race. My pick, CVV. He’s got the team, he’s got the form (he hung pretty well in Beijing) and the, uh, “atmosphere” in the U.S. scene is right. Unless “the Pate” doesn’t get reeled in from his early Jens! Voigtian break…I see him as the favorite.

+1!!!
A great preview to the races would be great! I doubt I need to share my pick but I think it’s going to be a great weekend of racing and I am REALLY jealous of those of you that will be attending! Crazy talent going to be there going head to head!!!

Hmmmm
can’t say I’d be a happy bunny if the time trial bike I’d had input in getting nigh on perfect over the last couple of years suddenly ended up being not under my arse but under one of my main competitors (not so bad if we both had it, but to lose it whilst someone else gets it would not make me think happy thoughts…)

I totally concur.
I liked the whole rise of Cervelo along with the rise of Riis Cycling angle. Plus, the Cervelo R3 SL is currently #1 on the “dreambike that I’ll never own” list. I’d hate to see CSC switch to Special ed. Someone like Jens! or Cance (the diesel twins) could break one of those.

Is it a given that Cervelo is out with CSC Saxo?
by Rushfan on Aug 21, 2008 4:54 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
not yet confirmed
but sounding increasingly probable that csc is shopping for a new sponsor.
hard to say, though, because i recall rumors going around the last time the contract between the team and csc was up. this is the first time, though, that there’s been a rumor ’bout a separate cervelo team that is sounding reasonably plausible.
but you know how it is with all these sorts of rumors. we get ourselves all wound up and it turns out to be nothing. or it turns out that someone stitched together portions of real stories to create something that bears no relationship to reality.

Will Cancellara have to stop riding it?
An awful lot of the pros seem to ride brands that aren’t quite what the label suggests them to be.

Whaddayamean?
Cancellara would still ride a Cervelo with their new sponsor’s paint job and decals?

It's been done before
Lemond, I believe rode, rebadged litespeeds for a while
As were, I think, the Huffys ridden by another vintage US squad.

This would be too obvious though?
Can imagine the smiles on the Trek/Scott/Spec execs when their 3500000 €investment rides around on a poorly disguised competing brand while everyone laughs behind their back (in their face).
Everyone who wouldn’t recognize a rebranded P3C, please raise their hand……………… no, didn’t think so.

The Huffy’s were Serotta.
Quick trivia: What was the actual brand of the bike that Hampsten rode over the Gavia?
by gavia on Aug 22, 2008 10:29 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
OUTSTANDING QUESTION!!!
I knew some of the Huffy’s were made by Serotta (as were a lot of otherwise painted frames back in the ’80s).
But, I remember reading earlier this year about his ‘88 Huffy being a Land Shark? But I can’t find confirmation on that. That seems like a weird scenario, given all the work Ben Serotta did for those Colorado based pro’s back then, why would Andy go with John Slawta. I knew a few guys who rode Land Sharks and they all reported those frames seemed kinda fragile. But, what do I know?
I have a Serotta hanging from the ceiling in my garaged but it’s disquised as a dusty nest of cobwebs.

It's been done
endlessly. Bike labels are only barely meaningful in the retail world, let alone the pro circuit where top guys get stuff made on demand.

Not so much now days.
Every so often there will be a guy on a TT frame that is not from the sponsor, but I cannot think of too many riders that were on road bikes not provided by the sponsor in the last couple years.
Yeah, 10 years ago it was really common, but not so much now.

Thanks, I forgot that he used a rebranded TT bike last year, but . . .
. . . . I already said that it still is pretty common for this to occur.
The reason for this is due to the potential sales of TT frames, which are only a small fraction of what a Road frame will be, yet it requires a much higher amount of engineering resources to get it into production.
Also, the majority of TT frames purchased typically end up being used by triathletes who are notorious in having the position of the aero bars exceptionally higher then that of a classic road TT position.
Consequently, a longer headtube can end up on the TT frame making it very difficult to achieve a classic road TT position as well.
This was the primary reason why Lance road a custom Litespeed Blade with USPS colors until Trek redesigned their TT bike for him.
In the last 2 years, can anyone think of a rider on a rebranded Road frame during any of the grand tours?
I can’t, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.
Maybe a Pegeretti here and there?

WIth the larger companies going to extra lengths to create custom stuff for their superstars (e.g. Tom Boonen’s Tarmac SL2), I believe there is less of this going on these days.
I think Lance did his early Motorola TT’s on re-badges Litespeed Blades. And when Merckx was marketing his “Caloi” brand, THOSE bikes were still made in Belguim (MX Leader, I think).
But, C’mon…the 2X World TT champ NOT on a Cervelo P3C? That will be waaaay obvious.

Cycling.tv - sharing your email addresses
Even I’m tired of hearing me bitch about Cycling.tv, but I thought that I’d pass along something I just discovered when I flubbed a Google search. Apparently Cycling.tv put a CSV file out there with the names and email addresses of its customers, free for the accessing (as Google seemed to be able to spider the whole thing). It’s offline now, but it shows that Cycling.tv takes your privacy as seriously as it does its commitment to deliver the programming it sells you.
So, uh, don’t give them any information you wouldn’t want out there on the ‘net, and don’t give them any email addresses you’d prefer to keep away from spammers.

good practice
As a general rule, I use separate and unique addresses for every company I deal with online (which is helpful, because then I can track back spam to those companies that share my details despite promising they won’t – hello, Datek/Ameritrade! Or the the equal rights org that somehow gave my address to a VA pol that voted against the very measure the org was organized to fight.). However, in this case, Cycling.tv ended up with my normal private address because – after a series of emails back and forth over login problems, I just got lazy and told them to use it. I try rather hard to keep that off the spam lists, and now I’m annoyed that it was out there (granted for an unknown period of time).
Anyway, did you know that if you don’t share your actual name and other true details on all these signups/web forms you may be opening yourself up to criminal charges of fraud? There’s at least one high profile Federal case where exactly that is happening, and there’s lots of effort at the state level to make it more likely. Funny, that.

Huh
what case is that you’re referring to? I haven’t heard anything about it..
by Le Comte on Aug 22, 2008 9:53 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
really?
even for stoopid useless web reg’s where no money is changing hands? that’s just silly. especially since they’re only collecting the information to sell it to someone else, usually without my permission.
losers.

well
keep in mind the gap between practical and legal. But a lot of companies are trying to close that gap (usually under cover of some “protect the children! by requiring true identities” BS). Collected info is more valuable when it’s accurate. And why spend your private money on ensuring a result you could get it with a bit of lobbying luck and public dollars?
by Sui Juris on Aug 22, 2008 12:13 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
What?
Ok, that’s it…do you have the web address for this CSV?

well, the file
isn’t online anymore – I just found a Google search result for it. You can (for the moment, anyway) recreate it with this link (my flubbed Google search). I took a screenshot and send it (with a modified version of my complaint) to Cycling.tv. Will post any response here.

climbing support for cadel
Charly Wegelius will ride for Silence-Lotto. The british climber will transfer after four years at Liquigas.
In other Cadel news, he will need 2 months off the bike to allow his knee injury to heal. This, according to Gazzetta.

Now THAT is a reinforcement
Very loyal mountain dude. One or two more of those and the GC -guys on rival teams will be afraid, very afraid. Of course ,it will all be poop if they pop like Popo in the mountains. The will to work for their leader ha to be there.
I would give a lot of money to know what happened to Popo this year. That and the backstory behind the firing of Piepoli are the mysteries of the 2008 TdF.

update from CN...
Wegelius to Silence-Lotto?
After four seasons with the Italian Liquigas team, Briton Charlie Wegelius may be moving over to the Silence-Lotto squad. The 30-year-old could be a valuable mountain domestique for Cadel Evans in the Tour de France. Sportwereld.be reported that the rider received an offer from the Belgian squad, but has yet to sign.
“We want Wegelius very much, because he’s a fantastic rider,” said Silence-Lotto director Roberto Damiani. “He is someone who can ride well in the medium mountains, and on a good day can even handle the high mountains. In the last Tour, we have seen that Evans needs such men to help him in those stages.”

My Cervelo dealer
and good friend says he got impression that Cervelo was wanting to start a new team. He went to the dealer retreat where he got the idea. He told me that Cervelo is paying 3.5 million Euros (I don’t know symbol) to CSC for riding their bikes. It’s rumored Specialized is going to try to buy off CSC, and that crazy Mike Sinyard is a ruthless one; he’ll do whatever it takes to have them on his shit bikes.
