Just a few random notes that won't merit inclusion in Gavia's next Gossip column...

Love the D-Tour homepage. That's a beautiful picture of T-Mobile in team time trial mode on the cover. Regrets, anyone?

Also, apologies to our German fans, but I can't help having a little fun with language this week. First, gender roles: where else but in Germany is there a "king stage"? Also, subtlety doesn't translate very well. For stage 1, the official preview says:

king stage, hill arrival; suspense guaranteed

Literally? Can they do that? I know it's one of the best-run races in the world and all. It goes on like this, til you get to the final, concluding time trial:

flat, the overall winner will literally be chosen in the last minute

Literally. Hey, don't say you weren't warned. Anyway, the D-Tour is a fabulous race, and its manageable 9 days run concurrently with the first week of the Vuelta. Which means the most common question put to team directors from riders this week is "don't you think the D-Tour fits my program perfectly?"

Five VDS points to whoever can find the longest German word on the D-Tour website. And it has to be at least 16 letters long, since I'm starting the contest with "Einschränkungen" from the front page.

My next posts, time pending: team breakdowns for the D-Tour and Vuelta, as well as an update on the VDS situation. Plus, a Quick-Challenge for the Vuelta.

Meanwhile, Team Columbia rolls on. Today Edvald Boasson Hagen won his first road stage at Cycling's top level, and his fourth victory in Columbia/High Road colors. His other wins include two time trials and a sprint over Jimmy Casper in a French continental race. Pretty awesome little resume for a first-year 21-y.o., though Boonen and Bennati left the race yesterday. Andre Greipel, fourth today, holds the overall lead by 11" over time trial ace Jose Ivan Gutierrez, who himself is looking good for his second consecutive overall title.

Update: one last item, Versus' Garmin-Chipotle Tour tribute video...

I have a book at home with cutaway drawings of various Star Wars space ships...

… and then I have the exact same book except published in German. You would not believe some of the things they had to come up with in there to explain things like “lightspeed drive” or “blasters”. It’s something along the lines of “sternlichtgeshwindichkeitsbewegungsmotorgebau”

It's wild coincidence I assure you...

… gifts from opposite ends of the family that mistook my interest in Science Fiction as an indepth interest in Star Wars. What they DIDN’T know about, was the (shamefully large) collection of Star Trek space ship blueprints I own. I have a vision one day, of owning a house that’s large enough to have a “blue print room” where all of those, and my blueprint of the Graf Zeppelin, Golden Gate Bridge, etc will be framed and hung.

Of course, living in Los Angeles, I first have a vision of owning a house… by which I mean a townhouse… by which I mean a starter condo… by which I mean a loft… by which I mean a loft in Compton.

Again - INSANE!

Quite the difference from here.

I realize, having my brother in HI, that incomes and real estate are vastly different all over the place but to really think about a place the size of my bedroom selling for the value of my entire house, wow. Although I think it would be cool to correlate my salary here to out there as that would be kind of a kick but the house comparisons, just really… wow.

"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."

by nikki on Aug 27, 2008 4:37 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Trust me... the salary doesn't garner a "wow" differential...

Housing is three to five times more expensive here than it is in the midwest, but I know I’m not making that kind of scratch… either that or the IT Directors in St. Louis are working second jobs at TGI Friday’s (with flair of course).

Yeah, I have to say

I went and did a salary ranking on my position (sort of as mine’s not listed exactly) and the jump wasn’t quite as high as the housing might suggest it would be. Holy crap as I keep saying. I think my brother has better options with his house in HI.

there are currently 139 houses in Pittsburgh

on the market for $20,000 to $30,000. Example or this. And what does $250K buy? You can actually get an overpriced condo here, too. Or this. Or this.

For 70K less, you can be my neighbor (this is, after all, the home city of Mr. Rodgers.)

Tour of Britain

FYI, was thinking of putting a Tour of Britain preview together for next week, unless someone else has one in the pipeline. It’s their Tour de France and deserves to be taken seriously.

Can't help but smile

at the comparison – bless the Tour of Britain, but I think it’s being very generous to say it’s our TdF (slightly different scale and different attitude towards it from most of the public) – it’ll probably only get some attention this year because of the success of the cyclists in the Olympics and Cav’s success in the Tour – the attention is a good thing mind, I’m not saying it isn’t.

Anyway, I’ll stop rambling and look forward to reading your preview. Also looking forward to seeing the end of the Tour of Britain here in my home town…will have to go and see Stuey and the other Sexy Bank boys

Ah another Londoner!

I am stewarding for it. Not sure what this will involve yet, but I’m hoping it may mean some behind the scenes access… ;-) No, I shouldn’t think much of London will care about it. There will just be endless grumbling about how disruptive it all is to the bus routes etc. Not many people get the point in this country of ours sadly, although hopefully our recent success may start to change things.

by Albertina on Aug 26, 2008 3:34 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Do Londoners

commute by bike much? Is it a bike-friendly place? Just curious. I’m told you have actual mass transit, so maybe bikes aren’t as critical.

"If writing too much about the Classics is wrong, I don't want to be right."

by Chris... on Aug 26, 2008 3:39 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

A lot of people do,

especially in summer when the heat on the underground is hideous. But the traffic can be awful in certain areas and drivers are generally not very bike loving…. I can’t commute by bike as I live too far out but I take the bike in on the train at weekends and then cycle around the centre when the traffic is better (although even then the taxis take delight in cutting you off).

It might get more attention if it were better run

From what I remember last year, one stage was pretty much wiped out when the police led the peloton the wrong way straight into a busy road, which led to the riders having a go-slow in protest (not much fun for anyone who’s taken the trouble to go and watch), and another got neutralised for a large chunk in the middle because one council hadn’t issued the right permit in time. The organisers blamed the council (or was it the police?), the council said that they hadn’t got the application early enough. Whatever, a breakaway was pulled up, everyone rode tempo for 30 miles or so, making sure to stop at red lights etc., then the break was sent off again nicely rested.

“The longest German word verified to be actually in (albeit very limited) use is Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz. [which, literally translated, breaks up into: Rind (cattle) – Fleisch (meat) – Etikettierung(s) (labelling) – Überwachung(s) (supervision) – Aufgaben (duties) – Übertragung(s) (assignment) – Gesetz (law), so "Beef labelling supervision duty assignment law”.]"

ok, now I'm really confused about cycling.tv...

was checking into the Universal Sports site (ie, who took over WCSN), to see if there was any information about whether their broadcasts and videos would be USA only (as was the NBC Olympics stuff, plus many of the prior cycling events on WCSN) … clicked on their “test video” in the registration section and the test video was an ad for JumpTV! (ie. who took over cycling.tv). Also noticed that “nmnathletics.com” seems to pop up frequently as a URL on both c.tv and the Universal Sports site …

So, clicking on nmnathetics.com got me to a Jump TV media kit site, where a link from May mentioned “World Championship Sports Network (WCSN) strikes strategic alliance with JumpTV.
JumpTV to Provide New Look and Feel to WCSN.com Along With Advanced Media Functionality Including Dynamic Video Portal, Social Networking Capabilities and E-Commerce”. I must have missed that one, here I thought that WCSN was stealing events away from cycling.tv … but instead they are “strategically aligned”?

Except that since May (I think, regarding timing) – JumpTV is merging with someone else (NeuLion) and WCSN was taken over by Universal Sports/NBC? So, where does that leave the “strategic alliance”? Can anyone make any sense out of this? Does the strategic alliance mean "ha ha, we now have more money that you c.tv suckers because we’re with NBC now, so we can outbid you for cycling broadcast rights and yet you won’t do anything because we’re ‘allies’ "?

(also interesting was that c.tv seemed to be indicating that even with my “Premium” package, ie not Gold North America that includes the Vuelta, that I will still get low-res coverage of the Vuelta? I’ll believe that when I see it …)

which is scheduled for friday, 29 aug, at 11am edt us (10am cdt us / 9am mdt us / 8am pdt us)

based on the time scheduled at the d-tour website, universal isn’t showing live coverage then, cause the time schedule has race times from 11.00 local to 13.40 local

This video is an attempt to show the ambience at the final hour of the Nice Ironman competition. A lame attempt i'll admit, but wth? If you're ever going to finish towards the end of an ironman, i suggest Nice as the place to do it. The applause and support and general ambience at the end is really remarkable. Dj's, pom-pom girls, people dancing, shouting, dance music blasting ... Some finishers just go on through, others raise their arms or just have a huge smile, one guy did some pushups while the dj counted for him, another did a cartwheel, some ran through with their little kids holding their hands. And this all 8 hours after the winners have finished.

When i went out my door to walk over to see the last hour or so of the Ironman, the first thing i saw was a guy across the street, pushing his triathlon bike, head hanging down to his chest, walking with a pronounced. Painful. Slow. Trudge. Medal around his neck. He'd done well. Hope he felt better the next day.

Then i got to the promenade and started seeing more of the people who'd finished: one guy asleep on the pavement with his wife by his side in all the raucous noise and confusion and crowds everywhere. Then the medical tent - massages, those heat blanket thingies, oxygen, people limping aorund, Oy!

Then every now and then you see a finisher with a medal around their neck who look fresh as a daisy, like they've just had a nice walk in the park.

Then finally you get to the finish line ... and that's the video. At the end there's a fireworks display (no one timed their finish to coincide with it this year) and then apparently a few hundred people stayed all night to party on the prom next to the beach until daybreak.

I could not do an ironman even if i wanted to, but i'll be there again next year to help welcome the last finishers in.
