Confirmed: Cadel Evans Renews
Will he? Or won't he?
He will. Cadel Evans has renewed his contract with Silence-Lotto, putting an end to rumors that he might leave the team. Sorry Katyusha, try again next time. Evans will ride for Silence-Lotto for the next two seasons. According to the team press release, the Australian will make the Tour de France his principal objective next season. Me, I would never have guessed. The press release also asserts that his decision to re-sign is "proof of his confidence in the team."

"His decision to re-sign is "proof of his confidence in the team."
Translation – “The money that we’re giving him guarantees that he won’t have the support riders he needs to beat Alberto in 2009 and 2010 or Andy Schleck in 2011. But there is plenty of honor in finishing 2nd on your own and getting rich doing it.”

Confidence in the team
He’s free to have it. I’m free to scoff at it. Freedom rocks.

Good for Cadel – it obviously means that he’s not as bothered about not winning a Grand Tour as I thought.
There's apparently
much to be said for a large salary and no expectations….

I still think there should be something
set up if we had a rider this year, we can get them next year for the same points.

A keeper league?
Man, that could get complicated. Even when the VDSBot comes on line.

I'm sure we'd all keep each other honest.
I was only in the three GT’s this year (and think it should still apply) but those on the Year Long deserve a benefit for sure for those they keep on their teams year after year. I’m just sayin’ is all.

A VDSBot??
Is this Nirvanna?? Are you just teasing me?

"Don't cry for me, Australia..."
It won’t be easy, you’ll think it strange
When I try to explain how I feel
That I still need your love after all that I’ve done
You won’t believe me
All you will see is a guy you once knew
Although he’s dressed up to the nines
At sixes and sevens with you
I had to let it happen, I couldn’t change
Had to stay all my life riding wheels
Looking up on the podium, staying out of the sun
So I chose Silence
Looking around, but trying nothing new
Nothing impressed me at all
They gave me a budget for two
Don’t cry for me Australia
The truth is I haven’t left you
All through my griping
My lack of teammates
I’ll keep my promise
Don’t keep your distance…"
Wow
Should I open up a Showtunes Section in the menu? I’d be happy to.

Goes well
with yesterday’s French poetry slam.

Deja vu?
Oh man. Loyalty from Cadel is good, but S-L really need to step up for their side of the deal, otherwise what happened in 07 and 08 will happen again in 09.
The 08 tour was like a train wreck in slow motion. Refuse to re-sign Horner who was fantastic in 07. Pick up lame Popo. Watch Popo burn his matches in lame escapes which he can’t win. Leave possibly their best climbers off the Tour team (Jurgen VDB and Matt Lloyd). Is their management really so pathetic and self-destructive?
Hang on – they signed Charlie Wegelius! No offence, but uber-mountain domestique he ain’t. And Phili Gilbert – fair enough for the classics, but how much money does that leave for decent help in the mountains?
yes
lyricism aside, i’m also having a hard time picturing this. SL seemed to be going backwards at the ‘08 Tour. but the teams that aren’t folding already have their leaders in place pretty much and Carlos may be on the market. and maybe there wasn’t so much interest in a double bridesmaid, especially with so many riders on the loose, some of them young up-and-comers. i wonder if there were any real options for Cadel…
