Horner breaks his collarbone at Elk Grove

The second stage of the Tour of Elk Grove near Chicago was a 150km flat road race that unsurprisingly came down to a field sprint. However the narrow 90-degree final turn 600 metres from the finish proved to be too much, sending the lead riders to the ground. Among them was Astana's Chris Horner who took the worst of it, breaking his collarbone.

Horner was in the top-10 entering the final turn when the crash occurred. He was able to ride across the line but holding his arm. He was transported to a nearby hospital where the break was diagnosed.

The injury comes at an inopportune time for the American as his Astana team is targeting the Vuelta a España after watching the Tour de France from the sidelines. Horner told Cyclingnews that it is too early to tell what the collarbone break will do for the rest of his season, but that he had been planning on racing the Vuelta.

That was the word that came to my mind.

More than anything, I wanted him to ride for Contador in the Vuelta. Could any “break” of the collarbone be insignificant enough to allow him to start the Vuelta?

well...

stuey broke his in the giro and started the tour…. don’t remember how much time stuey was actually off the bike

Just got back from the Tour of Elk Grove final stage criterium

Chris Horner showed up today and helped call the race/was interviewed for about 30 minutes. Very engaging and surpisingly enthusiastic considering his circumstances.

It was so great meeting you!

I was hoping you saw Chris up on stage! Did you see John interviewed? We were laughing at him and showing him how to wave for the cameras. Then later we were on the jumbo-tron doing doing a wave kinda thing. It was pretty funny.

I’m downloading pics and will put up a write up on today’s stage in a bit.

I talked to Chris after the stage and he was all smiles but sore.

yes she was

I had the pleasure of attending this event with Nikki on Sunday. She was way over the moon. It also helped that we got the total VIP experience too. Part of the race was sitting in air condition and enjoying great company. Very fun event.

crapola!

Just saw Chris race in the Tour de Gastown a couple of weeks ago. He even smiles when he’s racing flat out!

At the race yesterday,

it didn’t sound like Chris is going to be doing the Vuelta. When I asked about it there were no smiles being shared. Serious craptastic bummer. Although I would not put it past him to do what he could to heal it up and try and get back in form for it. The next few weeks I would think would be key.

Indicating puppylove for Horner

-A song children sing to tease others about having a crush on someone “x and x sitting in a tree, k-i-s-s-i-n-g”

K-i-s-s-i-n-g! (spell it out)

Sucking his thumb,
Wetting his pants,
Doing the hula, hula dance!

I'm not thrilled with

these kind of jokes and hidden insults, just to be clear.
I’m a big fan of Horner and very dissapointed that he misses the Vuelta, and even worse, probably the rest of the season too.

Sorry Bruce

No insult intended, truly. I just found the level of bummed-ness at his injury funny .

I'm a Horner fan myself. An exciting rider who hasn't gotten the breaks he deserved. My only complaint is that he chose to enter the Bruyneel-meatgrinder instead of persuing his own chances. He should be winning races for himself and not just be a second rate helper.

you misunderstand the tone of the tease

it’s a gentle tease, even among kids, as well as a jump rope rhyme (or sometimes a hand-clap rhyme). Very much a 7 or 8-year-old sort of thing. Often the main put-down is to the kid whose name is used in place of the word “baby” in the baby carriage. (Or that’s how we did it, anyway.) And it was used for any two people you wanted to tease. Generally no “actual” romantic-or in any way sexual-implications. In fact, it is often used about non-couples / impossible couples for comic effect, or to indicate that someone is showing concern for someone else.

Does it say something about American society that showing concern for someone will elicit this tease? Probably. But it isn’t an insult or a joke. Just…well…childish, or maybe child-like.

Boy, Johan must be really please

that one of his best road captains crashed at a US race. Just one more pin shoved into the ASO doll.

If he'd ridden in the Tour

he’d be relaxing now instead of nursing a broken clavicle.

Actually...

Chris loves the Elk Grove race so Tour or no, I think he’d have been here.
He was already talking about being back next year.

and this never would have happened.

Plus Johan must have been overjoyed at seeing Horner goofing off

,letting that guy and his bike hitchhike a few weeks ago. No injury-risk there :-)

I agree with Drew -

The thing he did a few weeks ago is the kind of guy he is.
And his smiles and love of racing here is too. He was awesome this weekend and Astana should give him a pay raise for his personality and friendliness with fans. He truly looked like he appreciated and enjoyed every fan there that wished him luck and said hello.
