Cycling.TV: hijacked domain/DNS
Cycling.TV's domain registration ran out August 29. Somebody else now has it, updated it today (August 30) and it now directs to a junk ad site.
DNS changes may take a little while to propagate, and you may still have a more local cache of the good one, but soon enough you too won't be able to get to Cycling.TV. Here, try it.
Somebody royally, big-time screwed up. If we're lucky, it'll be back up within a couple of days into the next work-week, OR they'll have to move to an alternate name.
For those of you who know what I'm talking about, the good info (I found it cached at work) is:
;; ANSWER SECTION:
cycling.tv. 1318 IN A 216.58.225.150
;; AUTHORITY SECTION:
cycling.tv. 55300 IN NS dns2.xosn.com.
cycling.tv. 55300 IN NS dns1.xosn.com.
The new jacked-up record is like this:
;; ANSWER SECTION:
cycling.tv. 3600 IN A 69.64.155.128
;; AUTHORITY SECTION:
cycling.tv. 3600 IN NS dns1.name-services.com.
cycling.tv. 3600 IN NS dns2.name-services.com.
cycling.tv. 3600 IN NS dns3.name-services.com.
cycling.tv. 3600 IN NS dns4.name-services.com.
cycling.tv. 3600 IN NS dns5.name-services.com.
So, anybody got a bittorrent of the Vuelta prologue? So much for watching it on demand. Actually, I'm gonna play with changing a computer's DNS servers to the IPs of dns1&dns2.xosn.com, and see if I can get to it that way.
Un-frickin'-believable.
-Greg
Update: If you are comfortable doing this, change your computer's DNS servers to 216.58.225.241 and 216.58.225.242 and restart the computer. These are the real Cycling.TV DNS servers, but making this change makes your computer do all DNS lookups through them. You may find initial lookups slow, so reload pages until it starts working. We're now watching Stage 1 as live. Muck with this at your own risk. You have been warned. :)

major effup by c.tv and it's not as if someone didn't get emails about renewing their domain
sheesh I got tons of emails reminding me for mine, and it was on automatic renewal anyway
looking on the bright side...
The “new” (cough) site has a cleaner, more navigable design. o.O

I don't know whether to laugh, or...
laugh with a really nasty twist to my lip. Guess we can’t hope that someone on this list stole it… Oh well… Guess I’ll actually get some work done this week.
What the hell.
So I went back to old marked pages and I had this one:
http://cycling.tv/channels/free2view or same thing as a direct link HERE.
It enabled me to sign in at the top. And I come to my page showing my subscriptions. Below all that are links and listing for recent races/highlights. Of course then the links go to the crap page when the media player page comes up. What a screw up.
I’d love to change my stuff as noted above but I am not a computer person so I fear that will screw me with other stuff so I am going to not go that route. What on earth does CTV plan on doing? Refunding EVERYONE who’s paid for this? Seriously a mess.
"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."
cache + other domains
I’ll wager that your free2view link was cached, and I believe that the login authentication is normally via a non-cycling.tv domain (nmnation or something weird like that). However, after the authentication was done and it tossed you back to cycling.tv, you got that smirky blonde co-ed again.
Clear your cache, and that free2view link should show you the garbage site.

nice job CTV!
Last night I took the Vuelta package since ES shows US Open, and you can bet that the tennis matches (or motorsports) ALWAYS delay cycling coverage.
Saw the first stage as live, guess that was it then, uh?
Unbelievable.
UFB!
We always knew those guys were dumber than skunks (except for Brian and Anthony), but nobody but nobody could be that stupid. I think it’s planned thing because they couldn’t pay for the Vuelta.
for usa viewers, you can watch the vuelta LIVE (in spanish)
if you have dish or directv, or check with your cable provider for the spanish language channels, specifically TVE-International
coverage scheduled to start daily between 16.00 and 17.00 local (10am-11am edt us / 9am-10am cdt us / 8am-9am mdt us / 7am-8am pdt us)
daily program schedule for rtve channels
"Wizard's first rule. People are stupid. They will believe anything they want to be true or fear to be true." -- Terry Goodkind
you can also get tve-international from jumptv

Funnily enough
that link to cycling.tv above works for me, but PodiumCafe is a bit screwed up for me. The front page claims that there are 150 comments on the Vuelta prologue page, the page itself reckons it only has 8, although it shows a lot more than that below. But only those relating to the US TT, lots of which are shown as unread even though I saw them yesterday. I’ll go and check out a few more random cycling sites to see if it is some rad-specific pox or curse.
did you get all the way to actual video, of something that you have not watched before?
It is amazing what your computer can have cached… you can get in several levels on that… Though if / when they fix it, I guess we’ll have to clear our caches again, or end up getting to the bad site even after the problem is over (?). And the Podium Cafe count seems to occasionally be screwy when it’s 2 or 3 AM on the West Coast, and Chris is playing with the site instead of getting actual sleep. That would be my first guess, based on the time of your post.
eh
insomnia. And that was from the good wine. OK, back to bed now.

first it was only white wine that did it to me...
Then any alcohol…
Now it happens all the time with no help at all.
Ride more. Swim more.
I don't subscribe
here in Europe you can get them all off the telly anyway. I just had a peek. For curiosity.
i've got cycling.tv on...
not sure exactly what hubby did, but he created a text file that he saved in my windows/system32/drivers/etc directory that sets up a host on my machine that uses that IP address of 216.58.225.150 that gregm provided in the start of this thread…
"Wizard's first rule. People are stupid. They will believe anything they want to be true or fear to be true." -- Terry Goodkind
Yes - edit the hosts file
Located usally at c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
It has no extension, so it will likely ask what program you want to use to open it. Choose notepad.
Then add the following line:
216.58.225.150 www.cycling.tv
Then quit and reopen your browser, and you should be able to get in.
should have said
save the file after adding the line…
on a windows machine, go to the Start button, then choose Run... type in "CMD"
this brings up a command prompt
change to the c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc directory
then use key “notepad hosts”
and that will bring up the “hosts” file to edit
"Wizard's first rule. People are stupid. They will believe anything they want to be true or fear to be true." -- Terry Goodkind
Bruce and Frinking report the site up but no luck here
Anyone know what the disk cache is named in Safari and firefox, so I can delete it manually? I’ve done everything else I can think of. (I have 3 old computers backed up on this laptop, so “cache” returns a wealth of options.)
That’s assuming they are not just looking at their own cached Cycling TV pages…something that has faked out a couple of other people.
what operating system are you running?
"Wizard's first rule. People are stupid. They will believe anything they want to be true or fear to be true." -- Terry Goodkind
I have found and manually cleared my firefox cache folder...
gone under “preferences” to “privacy” and cleared the cache and all private data and logins that way, too… shut down again… and I’m still loading the bogus page.
if you tell me your operating system, i might be able to help you further
"Wizard's first rule. People are stupid. They will believe anything they want to be true or fear to be true." -- Terry Goodkind
to edit the host file for your system
Run the Finder
Select Applications
Select Utilities
Run Terminal
This is the equivalent of the command prompt
run the command: sudo -u root bash
This will ask for your password – if you can’t sudo to root, you can’t edit the hosts file
run the command: cd /etc
edit the hosts file using whatever editor you have, add the line
216.58.225.150 www.cycling.tv
"Wizard's first rule. People are stupid. They will believe anything they want to be true or fear to be true." -- Terry Goodkind
save the file after editing
"Wizard's first rule. People are stupid. They will believe anything they want to be true or fear to be true." -- Terry Goodkind
I just posted a non-command line "how to" for the mac
on the other thread,
http://www.podiumcafe.com/2008/8/31/604751/la-vuelta-stage-1-live#comments
It looks like I may be in, as I can run some of the on demand stuff. So I guess it worked.
With apologies for double posting… might as well throw it on here, too. Thanks for the tutorial BTW, and the link; I have saved both for future reference.
————————-
so maybe I just need to sit tight? Cool.
In which case, for other mac users…
pull down the list under the apple icon.
you will see "system preferences."
Go there.
Click on "network" (one of the options under "internet and network.")
I am on Airport, but it might look similar if you are on ethernet (etc.)
Click on the "advanced" button.
The next pop-up window will give you a selection bar at the top. Click on DNS.
You will see one (maybe more) servers (numbers) listed in the lefthand box, and a corresponding list of what each is for in the right hand box.
Click on the "+" below the left hand box.
Add 216.58.225.241
click on it again, and add 216.58.225.242.
Now go to the right box, and click that "+" sign.
Add www.cycling.tv.
do that again.
[no idea why both.]
Note as Pieter points out, if either of these are actually malicious redirects, someone could theoretically steal data (?) or do "bad stuff." I’m not clear on the details, but I’m trusting that, whatever CTV is, it only steals our money legally, in an up-front sort of way. And that Greg is a long time Podium Cafe member, and that the person posting as Greg is Greg.
If you are comfortable with that level of trust, go ahead and click "OK" on that little window (which will close) and then click "apply" on the other window, which you can see again.
I don’t think you have to restart the computer, but quitting and restarting the browser is a good idea.
You can also look for "emtpy cache" or "reset Safari" or "preferences" in the list under the browser name, and use that to clear history and disk cache.
I can get the stupid Tom Boonen / specialized ad nice and clear, so I think I actually am in. (There’s no way to say "am I in yet" without feeling stupid, right?)
Yesterday they claimed "on air" for an hour or so before they came on air, so they’re just confused about the meaning of GMT, or something amateurish like that.
flushing caches on operating systems
http://www.tech-faq.com/flush-dns.shtml
"Wizard's first rule. People are stupid. They will believe anything they want to be true or fear to be true." -- Terry Goodkind
Always flush
when you close a session. Set your browser to do it automatically. I have FF set up to keep only the cookies from sites I actually log-in to regularly, everything else – cookies, pages etc – gets flushed on exit.
pounding along in three ratios like a sonata

Hey guys...
I didn’t change anything on my computer and when I went to log in this morning, I got the correct CTV page. I even see today’s live stage listed. What ever happened yesterday seems to be gone.
"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."
I think anyone who didn't log in while it was bad is now good
and so is anyone who has their settings set to dump all information at the end of a day, or a session. But if your computer is overly….data retentive… and you logged in to the bad page, you’re still poisoned.
Have you tried the C-cleaner program
Its a free program that cleans up/optomizes your system. I run the cleaner every two weeks and it really helps with performance, etc.
The Computer Guys on our local NPR radio show always recommend it.

mac is
smart enough to not need that sort of thing based as it is on BSD unix. *nix based systems do a lot of the silly house keeping that winderz need optimizers for.

Makes sense.
Macs have always been pretty good, and eventually they took some of the good ideas from SUN (now that was a fantastic computer, before it’s time).
umm what?
sigh.
Seriously, are there no dorks here capable of turning this place into Slashdot?

Definition? It's a
computer nerd blog-like-entity with considerable unintentional humor value…for the rest of us.
Or if your question is asking,
“are we not nerds…”
the answer is, "we are
!"
I got in from CyclingFans.com
I used the cycling.tv link in today’s Vuelta paragraph, just under Pozzato’s Pic:
http://www.webfire.co.uk/idevaffiliate/idevaffiliate.php?id=194</a>
I haven’t tried the farked domain again yet, but this accepted my login and opened media player…
BTW- Thanks for this site from a lurker! Wierdly familiar humor – old friends conversations & tag lines are so similar I know the next line before scrolldown – and a couple guys could BE my spouse
well, more than a day after the fact
I’m going to go with: inconclusive. Primary characteristics of being Sui Juris’ spouse/partner include, but are not limited to: non-responsiveness to requests and extended periods of silence. Secondary characteristics include: hostility to requests for assistance, not passing up opportunities to embarrass me online, and a general predilection for actually drinking the last bear.
there are no commenting edits here on PdC
It’s a conspiracy, I tell you.
(FWIW, I much prefer beers to bears. Even after lots of beers.)
Drink my last Bear will you ...
We’ll see about that….
and you’d best stay out of my fridge too if you know what’s good for you.. ;)
This no edits feature is actually very amusing.

actually you can, by looking at the list of your posts, and clicking on the notepad thingy
I think… am I making this up?
clueless much... it's mind boggling
I just received an email from c.tv announcing that the Vuelta s coming to cycling.tv and that I should register and then the URL provided doesn’t work (still doesn’t work for me)
truly mindbloggling to me
well, either very few people got in
or else specifying the DNS servers to get directly at CTV was a big help; today, I could run the higher-res feed with absolutely no stutter or drop or silence or glitch. Silver lining, I guess. Of course, I spent enough of the night and morning fighting to get in, that I fell asleep and only by luck avoided drooling on the keyboard. Not so thrilled by that. Luckily, not so much happened in those 20 miles.
Jeezeee!
Who knew all this was going on the one day I decided to sleep in! I was hoping to watch the stage later on replay…..
And I almost subscribed yesterday
when no Vuelta coverage near me

Hijacking take two
just tried to login and got the hijack site again. And this is after successfully watching some of the prologue this morning. Something fishy is going on here.
