La Vuelta Stage 2... LIVE?

Vuelta2_medium

First, the stage: it's 167km from Granada to Jaen, a bumpy but non-selective route which should see a mass finish of some sort. However, the profile at least shows an ascent to the line. If that's actually true, it could make for an interesting list of names in the finale. Maybe Filippo Pozzato can hang on to his golden jersey, as well as his horrendous moustache, for another day. And if not, then the megabattle of the sprinters will kick off -- a nice alternative.

Problem is, I have no idea if anyone will see it. See the sidebar post concerning the fact that Cycling.TV apparently saw their URL expire and had it fall into the hands of some garbage site. GregM talks about how to find the site by using the IP address, though that's above my pay grade (I tried). You also can't find it via JumpTV. My guess is that, with the holiday weekend, it'll be days before they figure this one out. Jaws are no doubt dropping in London as we speak. Worse, the Cyclingfans.com alternatives appear to be blocked from US addresses. Check there and Steephill.tv for hope. Bruce and UMWolverine have alternative suggestions as well in the fanpost.

I am speechless. I don't want to torch C.TV til we find out what happens, but this sounds like a complete and utter joke. And if it's not fixed before the mountain stages... not a very funny one.

Cyclingfans only have two options.

One is only available in Denmark, the other just takes me to the website of the broadcaster with no hint of a live stream. Steephill has zilch. Unimpressed, to say the least.

BTW: Nice to announce now that you don’t need the Vuelta package, yet yesterday I couldn’t open it with premium, once again money spent on nothing at CTV….

Europe, UK

I clicked on that link again and now I see the proper CTV page. I don’t know whether they are slowly rolling out the fake page or slowly rolling out the fix. Maybe there is some super cyberspace battle goig on between the two DNS versions.

cycling.tv on here

The main cycling.tv site is on for me (I live in Virginia). I saw the TTT live yesterday, and I took part in an innertube chat.

But this morning, while I can access the main site, the innertube leads me to the add site.

we have a break of 4 riders

Jesús Rosendo (Andalucía-Cajasur), Egoi Martínez (Euskaltel-Euskadi), Cyril Lemoine (Crédit Agricole) and Mikhail Ignatiev (Tinkoff Credit Systems)
peloton @3.19

by Bruce Suomi on Aug 31, 2008 9:36 AM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

OK, I reset my DNS lookup

listing each of those two numbers, and identifying each, under “search domains,” as www.cycling.tv

This gets me almost all the way in. Except now, Safari refuses to recognize the URL for the player. Yesterday, Firefox refused, but Safari was fine.

So it’s probably a pop-up setting that got reset while I was trying to clear all possible types of history from the browsers.

So fucked.

by JFS_PGH on Aug 31, 2008 9:36 AM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

JFS - try this link

http://www.cycling.tv/

note the extra / at the end of the link. (half a Hoste!).
I dont know if this will help or not. hope you get up and running

I do have the site up and am watching yesterday’s time trial.
I dont know when todays stage starts on CTV

by roadside on Aug 31, 2008 9:45 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

no, the mac has an interface, it won't let you end in a slash.

I’m pretty sure it has to do with something stupid like pop-up settings. It lets me log in, takes me to the player, tries to launch the window, and only then gives me the error message.

Hmmmm…I didn’t intentionally reset quicktime, but I’ll check that out anyway. AAAAND…what are proxies, and do I need to tweak those settings also?

so maybe I just need to sit tight? Cool.

In which case, for other mac users…

pull down the list under the apple icon.
you will see “system preferences.”
Go there.
Click on “network” (one of the options under “internet and network.”)
I am on Airport, but it might look similar if you are on ethernet (etc.)
Click on the “advanced” button.
The next pop-up window will give you a selection bar at the top. Click on DNS.
You will see one (maybe more) servers (numbers) listed in the lefthand box, and a corresponding list of what each is for in the right hand box.
Click on the “+” below the left hand box.
Add 216.58.225.241
click on it again, and add 216.58.225.242.
Now go to the right box, and click that “+” sign.
Add www.cycling.tv.
do that again.
[no idea why both.]

Note as Pieter points out, if either of these are actually malicious redirects, someone could theoretically steal data (?) or do “bad stuff.” I’m not clear on the details, but I’m trusting that, whatever CTV is, it only steals our money legally, in an up-front sort of way. And that Greg is a long time Podium Cafe member, and that the person posting as Greg is Greg.

If you are comfortable with that level of trust, go ahead and click “OK” on that little window (which will close) and then click “apply” on the other window, which you can see again.

I don’t think you have to restart the computer, but quitting and restarting the browser is a good idea.
You can also look for “emtpy cache” or “reset Safari” or “preferences” in the list under the browser name, and use that to clear history and disk cache.

I can get the stupid Tom Boonen / specialized ad nice and clear, so I think I actually am in. (There’s no way to say “am I in yet” without feeling stupid, right?)

Yesterday they claimed “on air” for an hour or so before they came on air, so they’re just confused about the meaning of GMT, or something amateurish like that.

This video is an attempt to show the ambience at the final hour of the Nice Ironman competition. A lame attempt i'll admit, but wth? If you're ever going to finish towards the end of an ironman, i suggest Nice as the place to do it. The applause and support and general ambience at the end is really remarkable. Dj's, pom-pom girls, people dancing, shouting, dance music blasting ... Some finishers just go on through, others raise their arms or just have a huge smile, one guy did some pushups while the dj counted for him, another did a cartwheel, some ran through with their little kids holding their hands. And this all 8 hours after the winners have finished.

When i went out my door to walk over to see the last hour or so of the Ironman, the first thing i saw was a guy across the street, pushing his triathlon bike, head hanging down to his chest, walking with a pronounced. Painful. Slow. Trudge. Medal around his neck. He'd done well. Hope he felt better the next day.

Then i got to the promenade and started seeing more of the people who'd finished: one guy asleep on the pavement with his wife by his side in all the raucous noise and confusion and crowds everywhere. Then the medical tent - massages, those heat blanket thingies, oxygen, people limping aorund, Oy!

Then every now and then you see a finisher with a medal around their neck who look fresh as a daisy, like they've just had a nice walk in the park.

Then finally you get to the finish line ... and that's the video. At the end there's a fireworks display (no one timed their finish to coincide with it this year) and then apparently a few hundred people stayed all night to party on the prom next to the beach until daybreak.

I could not do an ironman even if i wanted to, but i'll be there again next year to help welcome the last finishers in.
