US Nats: Road Race Championships... LIVE!

Logo_medium

Want more live racing? Not thrilled with the logistics from the other races? The US National Road Championships has a home for you. Easy access to live video through the main website. Starts at 1pm Eastern in Greenville, SC, or in about 13 minutes.

Nats races always have a healthy flashpoint between the big European stars and the domestic scene guys, with the US being even more divided (geographically at least) from the glamor scene. This time, Garmin will likely bridge the gap some and possibly pwn the race. But as Itswells mentioned in our race preview, this is a hard course and will reward whoever has massive legs today. If you're not in Greenville, tune in and enjoy!

well obviously seeing live racing is not in the cards for me

first it was c.tv and now its justin.tv that’s not loading. And you know, capacity planning for video streaming is not rocket science, both these companies have been doing (well trying to do) it for years, and yet they still get overwhelmed and can produce a feed.

http://www.justin.tv/avflive link at leasts gets you to see the chat...

they are working on getting the video/audio up. from yesterday, it sounds like a couple of guys with a generator and some fairly low tech equipment at the race.

Sorry little break

The Netherlands had their TT championship today. Guess how won…

Nathan O'Neill will be commenting again today

I think he is at a disadvantage. Unless it changes from yesterday, they had no cameras on the course and he didn’t seem to have race radio.

He’s pretty brave. Making it up as he goes.

Let’s hope less interviewing and more race updates

while not having cameras was certainly a disadvantage

some homework on his part would have been helpful, like looking at the start list and he could also have given internediate times. pretty sad state of affairs for US Pro Championships.

so far, it's audio, some Q and A

and logos against an out of focus shot of…not sure what that is, but it doesn’t seem to be cyclist. Leastaways, it’s not moving. However, the voice reports that they are now on the first climb.

good chat feed under that non-vid

someone reports, “there is a lead group now – numbers 25, 108, 81, 15, 27, 63, 125 – Jackson Stewart, Nick Waite, Brad Huff, Tom Zirbel, Jonathan Garcia, Dave Zabriski, and Michael Creed.” Maybe someone is uploading from a PDA next to the course.

Live streaming

Why can’t the US cover cycling races competently? If somebody could do it even half as well as the Europeans it would be ten times better than the coverage of any of the races here.

Garmin couldn't get rid of TH

TH rode a super smart race, and, once again, Danny Pate screwed up and went 10k too early. He’s like the econo-version of Jens Voigt.

Think whatever you want about his past, but I’d be pretty certain that TH is either the cleverest doper on the planet now, or clean, because you have to know that the USA Cycling, WADA, and the UCI have his whereabouts on speed-gps.

tyler: explain

it just didn’t make sense.

i managed to see the race at 10 different spots today, and was in great position on the final climb up paris mountain just before the peak to see george, cvv, tyler, freddie and co. bear down on the final remnants of the break. at that point, i thought (a) cvv had missed his chance to attack on the final climb and put time into george, et al., and (b) that this was george’s race to lose.

i mean, this is his hometown, he’d been hiding smooth in the peloton all day, he was driving the group of contenders on the final climb, looking great, seemingly comfortable, he’d been talking all week about ow he wanted to win the race, how he skipped the TT to have great legs, etc.

and now he’s over the final climb with no gaps to worry about. as a strong classics rider, you’d expect him to sizzle through the technical turns of downtown greenville. in both of the previous two years on this route, he made major moves in the final circuits downtown, finishing first and second those years. heck, this is where he eats dinner!

so, i was stunned to hear about the 2-min gap between tyler and the george group by the time we’d bombed down the mountain to watch the final two downtown circuits. how do those guys (and particularly george) let tyler get away like that IN TOWN?!?!

there are no official accounts posted yet, so i guess we’ll see. obviously, garmin-chipotle was controlling things, springing the breaks, etc. but still. george’s own teammate finished a minute or so up the road.

it just doesn’t add up. we know a certain well-known u.s. cyclist took a dive two years ago, so george could win. hope there weren’t any other shenanigans to explain this oddness.

p.s. tyler deserved the win. he looked like he was barely hanging on on the final climb, and then clearly was low on gas in the downtown laps. his sprint was, er, nails.

by sprobro on Aug 31, 2008 8:13 PM EDT reply actions

I was 2 inches from the finish line....

and Tyler deserved the win. Like him or not/like RR or not, he suffered through every one of those laps and when Caldwell quit working, he just kept on fighting. It’s amazing that he took it on the line.
I’m not inclined to be a RR fan (and never believed Tyler’s twin story), but when he came down the line, I was cheering for him.. (At least I was once George dropped off to 3 min’s by the last lap and CVV was no where to be found at the end. Pate would have been a great choice of the final 3 but he never bridged up…) And I wasn’t the only one cheering.
BTW, Greenville gets the race for (at least) one more year — announced by USA Cycling from the podium. (Woohoo!)

Huh

I’m not a Hamilton fan, but I don’t at all understand the “I’m gonna be sick” reactions. Hamilton beat everyone else. This is how racing works.

by Sui Juris on Sep 1, 2008 10:36 AM EDT reply actions

I completely agree!

It was the best US Pro Greenville has seen. Where in prior years it was George against the field or Levi against George and the field, this was a real race. It was a thrill to watch.

My whole probelm with him stems from

not manning up and coming true about all the evidence. I do think he has served his time and deserves to race but I reserve my admiration for those that can at least admit they were wrong.

Landis?

What’s your thoughts on Landis state of admission?

by spokejunky on Sep 1, 2008 12:24 PM EDT up reply actions

exactly my feelings about him

I think he took the easy way out. But he did serve his time and should be and is free to race for anyone who wants to hire him. Those are the rules, so be it. He did race smarter than the others and got to the finish line first, that makes him the winner. But no way, no how will I talk about redemption or salvation in this case.

Also, with all the retired cyclists available, some with commentating experience, and all the non-American riders also around, the only rider that they could get to call the race, on the official set up, is Nathan ONeill who is serving a suspension for a doping infraction?

by Sui Juris on Sep 1, 2008 6:38 PM EDT up reply actions

In my defense I was more bummed that GarMEN played it so strong all day

and then didn’t come home with the win. I agree Tyler served his time and I was a huge fan before the bust so I don’t mind seeing him in the field and riding well. I’m happy to see him riding well. My illness was more serious bummers for guys that I am a huge fans of not being able to finish a day that they controlled so well all day. Very bummed as their fan that they didn’t get the win. Once C and George were so far back, personally I was cheering for Pate. Seeing him win would’ve left me thrilled. Racing is racing and not much more can be said.

Just got home, just saw the results. Ugh, this leaves a terribly bitter taste in my mouth.

I used to be a big fan of TH, back before ‘03, when his finish at the Tour rang alarm bells for me… But after the disgusting lies he told after ’04, over and over and over, the defense fund pleas, the Tugboat stories, the chimera stuff, and the fact that he’s never apologized to his fans….well, the egotism that takes just boggles my mind.

He won the race today. He won the US Championship race, and if he passes the drug tests, then he won it fair and square. But I am a really burned-out ex-fan of his and I’m not happy about it at all. Yes, he is free to race; yes, he served his suspension time and is free to work for any team that will hire him. But I say: Shame on him. He is not who I want to see representing American pro cycling over the next year.

You know...

I’m not so enamored of testing standards that I’m utterly positive that the labs are always right. Nor do I think we yet know absolutely everything there is to know about the human body.

The twin defense might seem improbable, but scientists not involved in the case say it is indeed possible. To quote the New York Times:

Whether Mr. Hamilton is guilty or innocent, his defense does refer to a real phenomenon. Researchers who have no involvement in Mr. Hamilton’s case say it actually is possible for someone to have two types of blood in his body, without doping.

So there remains the faintest possibility in my mind that maybe, just maybe, Tyler Hamilton was innocent. Maybe he hasn’t fessed up because there’s nothing to fess.

Flame away, but mistakes do get made.

I wanted to believe Tyler

so badly, but the invoice/fax sent by “Haven Parchinski,” to Dr. Fuetes (and published in VN) kinda sent me over the edge. I still can’t believe how far that guy went to preserve… What was he trying to preserve again? And, I can’t believe the image of himself he was trying to foster before he was busted.

I sent a note to Tyler’s website asking him to offer an explanation for the documents that were published linking him to OP, and his webmaster (or whomever) responded by insinuating that the documents were forged.

If someone isn’t familiar with the documents I’m talking about, and is interested in the case, I’m glad to find a link for you and send you the correspondence I’ve had with Tyler’s people. walterstroy@hotmail.com

I’ll tell you one thing: If he is innocent (and this probably betrays how badly I want to believe), then he has endured an extraordinary injustice. And if he is guilty, then my usual optimism regarding the nature of humanity has suffered a blow.

Certainty, as ever, proves elusive.

good thing tyler won or else

we would be talking about how shitty o’neil is as an announcer and that the only reason he is announcing is ’cause he is suspended.

back to tyler, either he has nothing to admit as was stated earlier, or the dude is living under a cloud of denial or deceit. I would imagine is weight is always there and more so after days like yesterday. He has to look in the mirror everyday, beyond that it really doesn’t matter what we think of him. Good or bad.

I had noticed that...

I looked for pics of the other RR guys, and found one where Doug O is on a De Rosa, and one pic of Creed where he’s on a De Rosa too (although it’s less clear).

Maybe it’s in keeping with Cipo riding his own rig at the ToC and the other guys riding whatever’s around in the TT’s?

That team is just so strange…

A frozen 'cross ride from this last weekend. As you may be aware we have had siberian conditions here in the UK with a low of -14 degrees centigrade here on saturday morning. It was a beautiful sunny morning so i layered up and set off for a snowy 'cross ride along a roman road. I checked the thermometer when i got back to find it had been -10 throughout the ride! I had a lot of fun though and the views were spectacular.
